Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which frontman released his third solo album in 1993 entitled "Wandering Spirit"?

Answer: Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones)

Jagger had released solo albums prior to "Wandering Spirit", with "She's The Boss" in 1985 and "Primitive Cool" in 1987. Of the three, "She's The Boss" was the best seller in UK, reaching the top ten, but all of them sold better than his 2001 release, "Goddess In The Doorway" which only just cracked the top 50 in UK. "Wandering Spirit" featured contributions from Lenny Kravitz and Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea which was quite a contrast to "She's The Boss" which featured the talents of Sly and Robbie, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Nile Rodgers and Herbie Hancock among others.
2. In 2016, which rock legend released the country album "We're All Somebody From Somewhere" as his debut solo release?

Answer: Steven Tyler (Aerosmith)

Tyler has been vocalist with rock giants Aerosmith since 1970 and recorded some classic tracks with the band, but country music was never going to fit the band's style. The lead single from his solo effort "Love Is Your Name" went top 20 in the US Country charts and featured traditional country instruments such as banjos and fiddles as well as an autoharp.
3. What was Freddie Mercury's debut solo album called?

Answer: Mr. Bad Guy

"Mr. Bad Guy" was released in 1985, in between Queen albums, "The Works" (1984) and "A Kind Of Magic" (1986). The lead single from the album, "I Was Born To Love You" was remixed by Queen following Mercury's death and released on their "Made In Heaven" album in 1995. "Barcelona" was the title of his album recorded with Spanish opera singer Montserrat Caballe in 1988.
4. In 2001, which lady of rock released "Trouble in Shangri-La", her sixth solo album?

Answer: Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac)

The voice of so many great Fleetwood Mac tracks, Nicks also has a pretty impressive solo catalogue to work with, with songs such as "Talk To Me" (1985), "Edge Of Seventeen" (1982) and "Rooms On Fire" (1989) all having chart success. This album features a very impressive list of backing singers, with Sheryl Crow, Macy Gray, Sarah McLachlan and fellow Fleetwood Mac member Lindsey Buckingham all appearing.
5. Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver released a themed solo album in 2011. What was the album's subject matter?

Answer: Christmas

Being in two of the biggest bands of the new breed of rock didn't leave Weiland a great deal of time for solo releases but he did record "12 Bar Blues" in 1998, "(Happy) In Galoshes" in 2008 and the commercially unsuccessful "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" in 2011, which featured his take on several Christmas standards such as "White Christmas", "Silent Night", "Winter Wonderland" and of course the title track. Weiland died in 2015, aged just 48.
6. In 1987, George Kooymans released the album "Solo" as a follow up to his 1971 release, "Jojo". Which band has Kooymans been a member of since 1961?

Answer: Golden Earring

Sadly, neither of Kooymans' first two solo releases were huge hits, although he did experience some success with singles released from the albums. "Lovin' And Hurtin'" from "Jojo" managed to get to number 25 in his native Netherlands, while he released a cover of the Sonny and Cher track "The Beat Goes On" from "Solo" which stalled at number 62, also in Netherlands. Golden Earring are best known for their hits, "Radar Love" (1973), "Twilight Zone" (1982) and "When The Lady Smiles" (1984), all of which were written or co written by Kooymans.
7. In 2009, which rock vocalist released "Scream", a solo album produced by rapper Timbaland and featuring contributions from Justin Timberlake and J-Roc?

Answer: Chris Cornell (Audioslave)

Cornell, best known for his work with Soundgarden and Audioslave, certainly shifted his musical focus for this album as well as dividing opinion amongst fans. The album contained very little guitar and a lot of synthesizer and even "scratching" from DJ Timmy T.

The album was a hit in USA and Canada but despite releasing six tracks as singles, none of them were really successful apart from "Part Of Me" (2008), which was a minor hit in Denmark and Finland, and had a video that featured Method Man from Wu-Tang Clan.
8. Which iconic rock guitarist followed his successful 1980 solo release "Empty Glass" with the bizarrely titled "All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes" in 1982?

Answer: Pete Townshend (The Who)

"Empty Glass" did well in charts throughout the world, and also provided Townshend with a Billboard Hot 100 top ten hit in USA as well as a Canadian top five hit, with the release of the single, "Let My Love Open The Door", but his follow up album, while it may have charted, was derided by many in the music industry, my favourite review being from Robert Christgau, who said, "it's pretentious at an unprecedented level of difficulty-you have to pay years of dues before you can twist such long words into such unlikely rhymes and images and marshal arrangements of such intricate meaninglessness".

This definitely sounds like an album to avoid.
9. "The Great Western", released in 2006 was the first solo album from James Dean Bradfield. With which Welsh band is Bradfield the lead vocalist?

Answer: Manic Street Preachers

All are great Welsh rock bands, along with others such as Man, Badfinger and The Alarm, but Bradfield is most certainly the vocalist, guitarist and main songwriter for Manic Street Preachers, best known for hits such as "Design For Life" (1996), "The Masses Against The Classes" (2000), "You Stole The Sun From My Heart" (1999) and "The Love Of Richard Nixon" (2004) among many others. Bradfield's solo outing was well received by both critics and fans and gave him a solo UK top 20 hit with "That's No Way To Tell A Lie" (2006).
10. "Talk Is Cheap" (1988), "Main Offender" (1992) and "Crosseyed Heart" (2015) have all been solo releases from which elder statesman of the rock guitar?

Answer: Keith Richards (Rolling Stones)

Unlike fellow Rolling Stone, Mick Jagger, whose solo work has not always received favourable reviews, Richards seems to have the knack for recording a good tune without the rest of the band. His first solo release, "Talk Is Cheap" (1988) was called the best Rolling Stones record in years by some reviewers and the follow up, "Main Offender" is loved by many fans, even though it didn't sell as well as his debut. "Crosseyed Heart" (2015) is another strong album, and contains the wonderful track, "Illusion", a duet between Richards and Norah Jones.
