Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Paul McCartney has written many songs about love and relationships, but which one was actually about a dog?

Answer: Martha My Dear

Martha just wasn't any dog--she was Paul's Old English sheepdog, from which he drew inspiration when he penned the song. "Helen Wheels", which appeared on Wings' "Band on the Run" LP, was about Paul and Linda's Land Rover, known originally as "Hell on Wheels". "Michelle" had its origins when Paul reputedly heard someone at a party singing a song in French, and came up with his own song that was sung with French-sounding groaning instead of real words. John later suggested digging that up to work on for the "Rubber Soul" LP. Lennon also came up with the "I Love You" middle-eight section for this song. "Lovely Rita" is, of course, about that certain meter maid.
2. British progressive band Gentle Giant wrote about a dog; what was the song's name?

Answer: Dog's Life

"Dog's Life", by Gentle Giant, first appeared on their album "Octopus". It was released in 1972.
3. There's a song by Canadian group Rush where the underworld prince has to defend himself against a canine who's there to protect the overworld. The song is called what?

Answer: By-Tor and the Snow Dog

"By-Tor and the Snow Dog" first appeared on the band's 1975 release "Fly By Night". "Mystic Rhythms" came out on Rush's "Power Windows" LP and "Red Tide" was on Rush's 1989 "Presto" CD. ("By-Tor and the Devil Dog" was made up.)
4. What song with the word "dog" in the title, written by Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, was recorded in an album along with other songs as a tribute to former Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone vocalist Andrew Wood?

Answer: Call Me a Dog

The song "Call Me a Dog" appeared on the one-off release by Temple of the Dog in 1991. This group featured Cornell and members of the soon-to-be-famous Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were members of Mother Love Bone, along with Andrew Wood, who died of a heroin overdose.
5. Hank Williams had a huge hit with a song later covered by George Thorogood, with lyrics about sharing the doghouse with his pet after his woman threw him out. Name it.

Answer: Move It on Over

Hank Williams wrote and recorded his 1947 version, and 31 years later in 1978, George Thorogood had a hit with his radically speeded-up version. "Movin' Out" is a Billy Joel song which was on "The Stranger" LP. "Brokedown Palace" appeared on the Grateful Dead's "American Beauty release". And "Nobody Home", recorded by Kansas, was from their album "Point of Know Return".
6. What was the 1963 Rufus Thomas song that was also recorded by acts like The Rolling Stones, Ratt, and Roger Daltrey?

Answer: Walking the Dog

Rufus Thomas was an American R&B, soul and funk singer whose signature hit "Walking the Dog" made the Billboard top 10 in December of '63. "Black Dog" is a Led Zeppelin tune, "Hound Dog" was made famous by Elvis, and "Dog and Butterfly" is a Heart song.
7. Legendary Frank Zappa wrote a song about a dog called Evelyn. The full song title was "Evelyn, ___".

Answer: A Modified Dog

Coming in at barely over a minute long, "Evelyn, A Modified Dog" appeared on the 1975 LP "One Size Fits All". It was also the last album with the subtitle "Mothers of Invention".
8. A 2003 Weird Al Yankovic CD cover featured the singer/accordionist with what canine?

Answer: Poodle

His effort was called "Poodle Hat". The cover showed Weird Al standing up in a crowded train wearing a suit and tie, with a poodle atop his head.
9. The Red Hot Chili Peppers sang that "True Men Don't Kill ___".

Answer: Coyotes

"True Men Don't Kill Coyotes" was their first single which appeared on their self-titled debut album. The album was released in 1984.
10. In 1981, bassist/vocalist Chris Squire and drummer Alan White of Yes recorded a one-off single; what was its name?

Answer: Run with the Fox

In early 1981, after Yes called it quits but before their resurrection in 1983 with "90125", Yes' longest-lasting rhythm section stuck together, first playing in a short-lived project called XYZ. This group involved Squire, White, and Jimmy Page--hence the name XYZ (ex Yes and Zep).

Afterwards, with words provided by former King Crimson lyricist Pete Sinfield, they recorded "Run with the Fox", a 45 r.p.m. single with an instrumental of the same song as its B-side. Long out of print, this gem of a tune, with vocals by Squire and White, made its digital reappearance on the Yes box set "Yes Years".
