Animals in Songs Trivia Questions

1. One early cow song is the "Cow Cow Boogie" (1942) which was sung by which legendary blues singer for the Abbott and Costello film "Ride 'Em Cowboy" (1942)?

From Quiz
Let's Sing About Cows

Answer: Ella Fitzgerald

"Cow Cow Boogie" was written by Benny Carter and Gene De Paul for the 1942 film "Ride 'Em Cowboy". Fitzgerald had a role in the film, as Ruby. She sings "A Tisket A Tasket" (one of her biggest hits) but her singing of "Cow Cow Boogie" was cut from the film. Ella Mae Morse made a recording of the song with Freddie Slack and his Orchestra, and it became the first big hit for Capitol Records. Fitzgerald would release a version of the song with The Ink Spots in November 1943, and it became a top 10 hit. "Ride Em Cowboy" features Abbott and Costello as vendors who wind up at a dude ranch out west. It was their sixth film, and was one of the bigger hits of 1942. Other artists who have covered the song include Frankie Laine (1961) and The Judds (1987).

2. Which white animal did Britain's answer to Elvis (Tommy Steele), sing about back in 1959?

From Quiz Musical Critters

Answer: Bull

"Little White Bull" was written by Lionel Bart/Tommy Steele/Michael Pratt. It peaked at number four on the UK Singles Chart for Tommy Steele in 1959. It did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Some newspapers called Tommy Steele Britain's answer to Elvis, a slight exaggeration I think. His first UK chart entry was "Rock With The Caveman" with his backing group The Steelmen, which peaked at number 13 on the UK Singles Chart in 1956. By the end of 1957 he had dropped the Steelmen and not long after, Rock 'n' Roll too. He went into stage shows and movies and was very successful. His last UK Top 20 hit was the comedy song "What A Mouth" which peaked at number five in 1960.

3. The song "Kiss that Frog" was inspired by the fairy tale with a bit of sexual innuendo. The song appeared on which artist's 1992 album "Us", the follow-up to his blockbuster 1986 album "So"?

From Quiz Kiss That Frog

Answer: Peter Gabriel

The song was reportedly inspired by the book "The Uses of Enchantment" which looked at the sexuality of the frog and princess fairy tale. Although the song seemed cute, the lyrics could be interpreted to have sexual overtones, as is the case with many of Gabriel's lyrics. The song was the fourth single from the album "Us" but it didn't do well on the charts, however the video for the song won the Best Special Effects award at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards.

4. Which family group released the 1972 US Billboard Number 14 single "Crazy Horses" from their album of the same name?

From Quiz Songs About Horses and Ponies

Answer: The Osmond Brothers

Merrill and Jay Osmond shared vocals on "Crazy Horses". Alan, Merrill and Wayne Osmond composed the song which was a departure from their "boy band" image. "Crazy Horses" was the first album that the group was allowed to compose songs for and their label, MGM, was reluctant to release "Crazy Horses" as a single because it was much heavier than anything they had released before. The song was about air pollution caused by automobiles. The cover was shot in a junkyard. "Little Bitty Pretty One" was a 1972 Top Twenty release from The Jackson Five. The Cowsills' version of "Hair" went to Number Two in 1969 and in 1973 "Heartbeat It's a Lovebeat" went to Number Three for The DeFranco Family.

5. Who had a number one hit with "Black Cat"?

From Quiz A Musical Menagerie

Answer: Janet Jackson

"Black Cat" topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990. "What's New Pussycat?" by Tom Jones got to number three in 1965. Bent Fabric's "Alley Cat" reached number seven in 1962. And "Nashville Cats" peaked at number eight in 1967 for The Lovin' Spoonful.

6. Which group, that also sang "I Don't want To Miss A Thing," recorded "Lizard Love"?

From Quiz The Ultimate Reptilian & Amphibian Song Challenge

Answer: Aerosmith

"Lizard Love" debuted in 2003. "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" was Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 list in 1998. Of their 25 songs that made the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 between 1975 and 2001, it was their only Number One hit.

7. Duran Duran had a hit song in 1983 with "snake" in the title. Which song was it?

From Quiz Snakes And Frogs And Toads, Oh My!

Answer: Union Of The Snake

The other titles given are variations of Duran Duran top hits: "The Wild Boys" (Number Two in 1984), "Hungry Like The Wolf" (Number Three in 1983), and "Ordinary World" (Number Three in 1993. Duran Duran had a total of 15 Top Pop 40 hits between 1983 and 1993, including two Number One songs: "The Reflex" in 1984 and "A View To A Kill" in 1985.

8. This 1972 song by Loudon Wainwright III may have made people roll up their car windows on long trips.

From Quiz Crooning About Critters

Answer: "Dead Skunk"

9. Which celebrated Scottish indie pop band, fronted by Stuart Murdoch, had a top sixty hit in the UK with their 'Dog on Wheels' EP?

From Quiz A Musical Menagerie

Answer: Belle & Sebastian

Belle & Sebastian formed in 1996 when the original band members met on a music course in Glasgow. The band recorded their debut album, 'Tigermilk', as part of their course work and it was released to widespread critical acclaim. The band's subsequent albums, 'If You're Feeling Sinister' and 'The Boy With the Arab Strap', met with similar success and the band established themselves as one of the most influential British indie pop bands of the last two decades. Although they are considered an indie band, Belle & Sebastian have scored a number of hit singles and albums in the UK, beginning with their early EPs. 'Dog on Wheels' was the first EP released by Belle & Sebastian and features some of the band's earliest recordings. The lead track and the b-side, 'String Bean Jean', have both become favourites amongst fans of the band.

10. The song that lends its title to this quiz is one of Duran Duran's signature tunes. On which of their albums did it appear?

From Quiz Hungry Like the Wolf

Answer: Rio

With its catchy chorus and stylish video - filmed in the Sri Lankan jungle by director Russell Mulcahy - "Hungry Like the Wolf" was definitely one of the biggest hits of the Eighties, and one of Duran Duran's best-known songs. It was released as a single in May 1982, a few days before the release of "Rio", the band's second studio album. "Duran Duran" was the band's debut album, "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" their third, and "Notorious" their fourth.

11. "Atomic Dog" was a single from the 1982 album "Computer Games", by which rapper who sounds like he was related to a USA president?

12. Who sang "Wild Horses" in 1971?

From Quiz The Musical Zoo

Answer: The Rolling Stones

A classic Stones song written by Jagger/Richards. The single is taken from the album "Sticky Fingers". As a single it was released in the US only and just managed to make the top 30 in the Billboard Hot Hundred chart peaking at number 28.

13. Stephen Foster's classic racing song 'Camptown Races' has a chorus you have heard many times. What word is missing here? "Goin' to run all night Goin' to run all day I bet my money on a _____ Somebody bet on the bay."

From Quiz And They're Racing!

Answer: Bob-tailed nag

'Gwine to Run All Night, or De Camptown Races', to use the song's full title, was written around 1850, and was intended to be performed as part of a minstrel show. The structure is intended to be a mixture of solo singer and chorus support from the other performers on the stage. It seems to have been first performed by Christy's Minstrels, a blackface group led by Edward Pearce Christy which had close ties to Stephen Foster. They performed at a benefit for Foster in 1847, and became specialists in performing his music. The song 'Old Folks at Home' was sold to them for their exclusive use in 1851. The camptown referred to in the song would have been an area inhabited by laborers and migrant workers living in tents and crude shacks on the fringe of a frontier town. Such sites often attracted the gamblers of the region, and horse races, reputedly often rigged, were common.

14. This band formed in 1977. Some of their hits include "Photograph", "Rock of Ages", "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and "Rocket". What is the name of this band?

From Quiz The Rock Animal

Answer: Def Leppard

Def Leppard has had many successful albums including "High 'n' Dry", "Pyromania", "Hysteria" and "Adrenalize". The band has had its fair share of tragedies also. Drummer Rick Allen lost one of his arms in a car crash. Guitarist Steve Clark died of a combination of alcohol and prescription drug overdose.

15. The band in question here have reinvented their sound several times, most notably with their album "Achtung Baby". The single, "The Fly", came from this album; can you name the group in question?

From Quiz Who Sings That Song Buzzing In My Head?

Answer: U2

16. Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane were hallucinating to what 1967 psychedelic rock lyrics?

From Quiz A Musical Animal Safari
