Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Dog Eat Dog' was a number four UK hit in 1980 for which singer, then in a band, who later went on to solo success in both the UK and USA with 'Goody Two Shoes'?

Answer: Adam Ant

At the time, Adam was singing as Adam and the Ants and hit number one in the UK with 'Stand and Deliver' and 'Prince Charming' in 1981. 'Dog Eat Dog' was the first big hit for the band. Adam's real name was Stuart Goddard, but he renamed himself following a serious mental breakdown in the mid 1970s.

His stage persona was flamboyant, and he usually appeared with white stripe painted across his face. Ant has also had some success as an actor in both the UK and USA. Phil Collins sang with Genesis and Brian Ferry with Roxy Music.
2. 'Puppy Love' has appeared in the UK Singles charts on several occasions. The first appearance was in 1960, when it was sung by the person who wrote it. Which of these singer/songwriters takes the credit for it?

Answer: Paul Anka

Paul Anka reached only number 33 on the UK Singles chart with the song, although he did rather better in the USA, managing number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Donny Osmond took the song to number one in the UK and number three in the USA in 1972. S Club 8 (also known as S Club Juniors) did another version in 2002 when they had a number six hit with it in the UK, but did not trouble the USA charts.
3. In 1986, 'Touch Me (I Want Your Body)' was a hit in both the UK and USA for a lady called Samantha. What was her canine related surname?

Answer: Fox

Sam Fox began as a 'glamour model', posing topless for tabloid newspapers, notably 'The Sun'. She branched out into a recording career in 1986, with 'Touch Me' being her first hit. The song reached number three on the UK Singles chart and number four on the US Billboard Hot 100. It managed number one in several countries, including Canada and Australia.
4. Kate Bush had a UK hit in 1986 with a song called 'Hounds of _____'?

Answer: Love

'Hounds of Love' was from her album of the same name, which also gave her hits with 'Cloudbursting' and 'Running Up That Hill'. 'Hounds of Love' reached number 18 on the UK Singles charts. 'Running Up That Hill' was a number three hit in the UK and managed number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it her biggest hit in the USA. Kate will always be remembered for her dramatic rendition of 'Wuthering Heights' in 1978.
5. Manfred Mann had a number five UK hit with 'Fox on the Run' in 1968. Which glam rock band had a hit in 1975 with a different song with the same title?

Answer: Sweet

All these bands were around in the heyday of British glam rock. The lead singer of Sweet was Brian Connolly, who died in 1997 at the age of only 51. Another original member of the band, Mick Tucker, also died too early from leukaemia. 'Fox on the Run' reached number two on the UK Singles chart and number five on the US Billboard Hot 100.

They also had chart success in both the UK and USA with 'Little Willy' in 1972 and 'The Ballroom Blitz' in 1973.
6. Which 'Wild Boys' of British pop had a 1982 hit with 'Hungry Like the Wolf'?

Answer: Duran Duran

Duran Duran were successful in both the UK and USA. 'Hungry Like the Wolf' was their first big US hit, reaching number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 and peaking at number five in their home country. They hit number one in both countries with 'The Reflex' in 1984 and also had big hits with 'Is There Something I Should Know?', 'Ordinary World' and 'The Wild Boys'. Lead singer, Simon Le Bon, also made headlines for his yacht racing exploits and marriage to model Yasmin Parvaneh.

The band has never broken up, although the personnel have changed and various solo projects have been undertaken over the years.
7. The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band had their only UK chart success in 1968 with which of these space related songs?

Answer: I'm the Urban Spaceman

The Bonzos included Vivian Stanshall and Neil Innes and began as a jazz band before branching out into more surreal types of music. One of their recordings was called 'The Intro and the Outro' where each band member was introduced and played a solo. Since they announced 'John Wayne on xylophone' and 'Adolf Hitler on vibes' it was clear that the intent was not entirely serious. 'I'm the Urban Spaceman' was part produced by Paul McCartney. 'A Spaceman Came Travelling' is by Chris De Burgh, 'Telstar' by The Tornados and 'Space Oddity' by David Bowie.
8. Harry Nilsson wrote 'The Puppy Song', but which teen idol took it to the top of the UK charts in 1973 as a double A sider with 'Daydreamer'?

Answer: David Cassidy

The song appeared on Harry Nilsson's 1969 album, named 'Harry' and was apparently written at the request of Paul McCartney. David Cassidy had his second number one UK hit with it, following 'How Can I Be Sure' in 1972 and was at the height of his popularity with the younger generation.

The other options were also singers of the era, although Davy Jones was better known as a member of The Monkees.
9. The Hollies recorded 'After the Fox', the theme tune to the film of the same name, in 1966. The record featured which actor, who also starred in the film and had tasted chart success himself?

Answer: Peter Sellers

All these men were members of 'The Goons', but only Sellers and Secombe had chart success. Peter Sellers had minor success in 1957 with a recording of 'Any Old Iron', and then reached number four in 1960 with a comedy record called 'Goodness Gracious Me', with Sophia Loren.

They repeated the formula with 'Bangers and Mash' in 1961, reaching number 22 and Sellers also made the charts with a version of 'A Hard Day's Night' in 1965. That featured him declaiming the lyrics in the manner of a Shakespearean actor, often assumed to be Laurence Olivier, and managed number 14 on the UK charts. 'After the Fox' was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, who also wrote the score for the film, but neither the record nor the film was successful at the time.
10. Noel Coward's song 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen' referred to both of them going out in which form of weather conditions?

Answer: Midday Sun

The song was written in 1931 and was originally performed by Beatrice Lillie on the stage, before becoming a mainstay of Coward's own performances. Coward also wrote 'I'll Be Seeing You', famously recorded by Frank Sinatra. Coward was also a playwright, including 'Calvacade', and screenwriter with his credits including 1945's 'Brief Encounter'.

In addition, he was an actor and appeared in many films, among them being the original, 1969, version of 'The Italian Job'.
