Originally they went by the moniker of Group X, because the original members could not agree on a proper name. Then the group's bassist, Lemmy, claimed that another member had a big nose like the beak of a bird and a gas problem, hence, Hawkwind Zoo, then shortened to Hawkwind.

Liquid Len (Jonathan Smeeton) is a British lighting designer.
Smeeton was the creator of "Liquid Len and the Lensmen" (a reference to the "Lensmen" space opera books) who provided spectacular lightshows for the band Hawkwind in the 1970s.He has also provided lighting design for groups such as The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd and, more recently, The Deftones.
