The single itself managed to reach position 49 on the UK Singles chart and position 20 on the Irish charts, but did not do as well as the actual album "Meat Is Murder which reached top spot on the UK Albums chart. The album managed a respectable twenty-ninth position on the European Top 100 Albums chart and featured in the top 200 of the US Billboard 200 chart.

The single's artwork comes from a still of a 1964 Soviet fantasy film, "The Enchanted Desna". Which is fortunate, as lead singer Morrisey wanted an image of a dead chicken on the single's sleeve.

The Smiths formed in 1982 with singer Morrisey and prolific guitarist Johnny Marr. They recorded four studio albums between 1984 and 1987, managing to have all four albums chart at number one on the UK Indie charts and in either first or second place on the UK Album charts. They were banned for life from variety show "SNL" by host Lorne Michaels due to a horrendous and profanity laden performance by the intoxicated and drug fueled band.

"I'll Be You" reached number one on the US Billboard Modern Rock and US Billboard Mainstream Rock charts in 1989. "Merry Go Round" reached number one on the US Billboard Modern Rock chart in 1990.
