Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Australian rock band Hunters & Collectors released a track in 1984 which failed to chart in their homeland. It was re-released in 1986 to minor success and then again in 1990 when it achieved its best chart position. Which track was this?

Answer: Throw Your Arms Around Me

When first released, "Throw Your Arms Around Me" (1984) didn't trouble the Australian charts at all, although it was a hit in New Zealand. The track was included on their 1986 album, "Human Frailty" and released once again as a single, hitting just number 49 on the charts.
The track was re-released for a second time in 1990 and this time got to number 34 as well as establishing itself as a classic Australian rock track, being voted in at number 19 on a 2018 survey by Triple M radio list of the most Australian songs of all time.
2. In 2008, "Dog Days Are Over" peaked at number 89 in the UK charts. Fast forward to 2010 though and the re-released track entered the same chart at number 23. Which band found success with the track?

Answer: Florence + The Machine

London based band Florence + The Machine take their name from an early incarnation of the band featuring vocalist Florence "Robot" Welch and keyboard player Isabella "Machine" Summers.
"Dog Days Are Over" (2008) was taken from the band's debut album, "Lungs" (2009), which also featured the hits, "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" (2009) and "You've Got the Love" (2009).
3. Which song of unrequited love disappointingly reached only number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA in 1971, but stormed to number ten on the same chart, when it was re-released in its entirety the following year?

Answer: "Layla" - Derek And The Dominoes

"Layla" (1971) was written by Eric Clapton about his feelings for George Harrison's wife, Patti, who would in fact go on to marry Clapton in 1979, two years after her divorce from Harrison.
"Layla" wasn't the only song inspired by Patti as the songs "If I Needed Someone" (1965), "Something" (1969) and "For You Blue" (1970) were all written by Harrison about her and recorded by the Beatles, while Clapton also recorded "Bell Bottom Blues" (1970) and "Wonderful Tonight" (1977) about her.
The original single release of "Layla" in 1971 was a shortened version, designed to increase radio airplay, but when the track was re-released in 1972, the full seven minute, ten second version, including the piano talents of Bobby Whitlock, was released and it became a major hit.
4. Family band the Corrs had a number two hit in UK in 1999, with which track that was reissued and remixed following its disappointing showing in 1995?

Answer: Runaway

"Runaway" (1995) was the debut single from the Corrs and although it performed well in the band's native Ireland as well as in Australia, it stumbled in UK, peaking at number 49.
Following the success of the band's 1997 album, "Talk on Corners", a special edition of the album was issued in 1998, featuring remixed versions of several tracks, among them, "Runaway".
This version, remixed by Tin Tin Out, was released as a single in 1999 and swept all the way to number two in UK charts, only kept off the top spot by Britney Spears and her debut single, "...Baby One More Time" (1998).
5. "Need You Tonight" (1987) was not a hit in UK, reaching only number 58 on the chart. On its re-release just a year later though the song reached number two on the same chart. Which band brought us this track?

Answer: INXS

What a difference a year makes as this song, now seen as the band's signature song, struggled to make any impact on UK charts in 1987, yet in 1988, came so close to the number one spot. In fact it was only kept off the top spot by the popularity of Coca-Cola as the Robin Beck song, "First Time" (1988), originally recorded for a Coke TV commercial, held it off.
6. Guns N' Roses have had several UK hits, but which track from their "Appetite For Destruction" (1987) album was only a top 30 hit after being re-released following the success of "Sweet Child O' Mine" (1988)?

Answer: Welcome To The Jungle

Guns N' Roses' UK chart success shows how important releasing the right track at the right time is. "Welcome To The Jungle" (1987) was hardly a hit at all, peaking at number 67, but following the success of "Sweet Child O' Mine" (1988), which reached number 24, the track was re-released in 1988.
This time it did much better, reaching number 24, the same position as "Sweet Child O' Mine".
Following the band's top ten success in 1989, when "Paradise City" went all the way to number six, "Sweet Child O' Mine" was also re-released and went all the way to number six, the same position as "Paradise City". Weird huh?
7. Which Ariana Grande track reached number 19 on the Scottish charts in 2015 and then reached number one on the same chart when re-released in 2017?

Answer: One Last Time

The original release of "One Last Time" (2015) was a huge hit, breaking into the top 20 in Australia, Canada and in USA on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as in many other countries.
The track was re-released in 2017 as a charity single for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund, started after a terrorist bombing of the Manchester Arena following a Grande concert.
The re-release saw the track peak at number two on the UK charts as well as reach the top spot on the Scottish charts.
8. Which track by AC/DC peaked on UK charts at number 127 in 1980, only to get all the way to number 15 on the same chart just a year later?

Answer: Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution

"Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" (1980) was the final single released from the band's 1980 album, "Back In Black". While the previous two singles, "You Shook Me All Night Long" (1980) and the title track, released in 1981, had both been UK top 40 hits, "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" was a flop, not even cracking the top 100.
The track was re-released in 1981 though and gave the band their first UK top 20 hit when it peaked at number 15, and was followed by two further top 20 hits as "Let's Get It Up" and "For Those About to Rock" (both 1982) repeated the feat.
9. What was the title of the Moody Blues track that didn't even enter the Billboard Hot 100 in USA when initially released in 1967, but reached the heady heights of number two on the same chart when re-released in 1972?

Answer: Nights In White Satin

"Nights In White Satin" (1967) was a hit, but not a major one, in Canada where it reached number 30 and UK where it stalled at number 19. In USA it only made it as far as number 103 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following the band's chart success with tracks such as "Question" (1970), "The Story In Your Eyes" (1971) and "Isn't Life Strange" (1972), "Nights In White Satin" was re-released in 1972 and reached new heights in all three charts, hitting number one in Canada, number nine in UK and number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA, only held off the top spot by "I Can See Clearly Now" (1972) from Johnny Nash.
10. "Lovefool" (1996) was a minor hit in many countries for Swedish band The Cardigans when first released. In 1997 though it was re-released and became a huge international hit, thanks to its inclusion in which hit movie?

Answer: Romeo + Juliet

On its initial release, "Lovefool" (1996) did okay, reaching number 21 in UK and entering the top ten in Finland and Iceland.
It performed much better after being featured in Baz Luhrmann's 1996 movie "Romeo + Juliet" though, reaching a much wider audience, as it made its way into the top ten in Canada, Germany, Hungary and UK where it went to number two.
It also became a huge hit in Australia, where it reached number 11 and New Zealand where it went all the way to number one.
