Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The song "Kiss that Frog" was inspired by the fairy tale with a bit of sexual innuendo. The song appeared on which artist's 1992 album "Us", the follow-up to his blockbuster 1986 album "So"?

Answer: Peter Gabriel

The song was reportedly inspired by the book "The Uses of Enchantment" which looked at the sexuality of the frog and princess fairy tale. Although the song seemed cute, the lyrics could be interpreted to have sexual overtones, as is the case with many of Gabriel's lyrics.

The song was the fourth single from the album "Us" but it didn't do well on the charts, however the video for the song won the Best Special Effects award at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards.
2. Whose 1974 song "Spiders and Snakes" described the faltering attempts of a young boy to win the favours of a classmate by giving her a frog, only for her to tell the hapless young man that she didn't like creepy crawlies?

Answer: Jim Stafford

The song, which reached number three in the U.S. charts in 1974, was written by Jim Stafford himself along with David Bellamy (of the Bellamy Brothers), and not by David Bellamy the naturalist, famous in the U.K. for his environmental campaigns, although the subject matter would be more up his street! The song was Stafford's biggest hit although he had a few other successes with songs such as "Swamp Witch" and "My Girl Bill".
3. The song "Salamander" appeared on the 1976 concept album "Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to Die!" by which progressive rock, not heavy metal, band?

Answer: Jethro Tull

Jethro Tull, the band that famously and bizarrely won the first Grammy Award for "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance", released several concept albums during the 1970s. "Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to Die!" told the story of an aging rock star. The song "Salamander" was a short song with only a few lines of lyrics and appeared to refer to a woman the rock star knew, although the lyrics did hint at the legend of salamanders and fire: "Salamander, Born in the sun-kissed flame. Who was it lit your candle, Branded you with your name?"
4. "Tortoise and the Hare" was a song included on the 1970 album "A Question of Balance" by which progressive English band, known for fusing classical music with rock?

Answer: Moody Blues

"A Question of Balance" was their sixth studio album and featured their hit song "Question". "Tortoise and the Hare" was written and sung by bassist John Lodge and was the fifth song on the album. The lyrics described the fable of "The Tortoise and the Hare": "You think he's way up in front, but he's so far behind.

He's asleep in the grass, and he's run out of time. While your load was so heavy, you never wanted to stop".
5. The song "Crocodile Rock" was featured on the 1973 "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player" album of which music legend?

Answer: Elton John

"Crocodile Rock" was co-written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Although the song reached number one on the U.S. charts, it only achieved number five in the U.K. Criticized as being heavily derivative of other rock classics such as "Rock Around the Clock", Elton John dismissed the criticisms, saying that as it was about his own early experiences of growing up with Rock and Roll music, it was intended to be derivative.
6. Which 1970s heartthrob included the song "Turtles and Trees" on his 1970 album "Here Comes Bobby"?

Answer: Bobby Sherman

The bubblegum pop song "Turtles and Trees" was written by Jerry Marcellino and Mel Larson. In the lyrics, the singer compares himself to turtles who keep in their shell and trees who have strong roots: "Turtles and trees are friends to me, help me keep my sanity".

The album was Sherman's second and followed his eponymous first album released in 1969, both of which reached gold record status.
7. Moving on to 1980s heartthrobs... which band released the song "Union of the Snake" as a single from their 1983 album "Seven and the Ragged Tiger"?

Answer: Duran Duran

"Seven and the Ragged Tiger" was the third album by Duran Duran, and "Union of the Snake" was its first single. The song was written by the band and reached number three in the U.K. and the U.S. Lead singer Simon Le Bon made several claims about the meaning of the song.

He stated that the lyrics referred to the border between the subconscious and the conscious mind but also claimed that they referred to tantric sex. He also stated that the song was inspired by Jim Morrison of The Doors.
8. The song "Karma Chameleon", a global hit which spent three weeks at number one in the USA in 1984, was the product of which British band?

Answer: Culture Club

Culture Club was formed in 1981 and was fronted by Boy George, whose androgynous style of dressing made him a particularly noticeable character even in the ostentatious 80s. The band had several hits including "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" and "Church of the Poisoned Mind", and they won Brit Awards in 1984 for Best Group as well as Best British single for "Karma Chameleon".

The song hit number one in many countries around the world including Australia, Canada, Switzerland, and Finland.
9. The 1983 solo debut album for which Jethro Tull front man featured a song called "Toad in the Hole"?

Answer: Ian Anderson

Not sure if Anderson was talking about the British sausage dish - the lyrics do mention "warm toad in the hole", but he also states "Just let me be your toad in the hole". Anderson worked on his solo album "Walk into Light" with Jethro Tull keyboardist Peter-John Vettesse, and although the album was touted as being his own work and arrangements, it still had that Jethro Tull feel.

The album didn't particularly do well, only reaching 78 on the U.K. Charts and 202 on the U.S. charts.
10. The song "We All Stand Together" (also known as "The Frog Song" or "The Frog Chorus") was the theme to the 1984 animated film "Rupert and the Frog Song" and was written by which former Beatle?

Answer: Paul McCartney

Not only did Paul McCartney write the song, he also wrote and produced the animated film. "We All Stand Together", the theme song to the 1984 animated film "Rupert and the Frog Chorus" reached number three on the U.K. singles charts, and the film itself, which McCartney had been planning for many years, won a BAFTA for Best Animated Short Film in 1984.
