Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jimi Hendrix Experience
Answer: Electric Ladyland
Jimi Hendrix recorded three studio albums with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, but only the last one, 1968's "Electric Ladyland" hit number one on the U.S. charts. "Are You Experienced" and "Axis: Bold as Love", both released in 1967, hit numbers five and three on the charts, respectively. None of the albums hit number one on the U.K. Charts, with "Are You Experienced" reaching number two.
However, "Are You Experienced" turned out to be Hendrix's best-selling album, receiving five times Platinum status in the U.S.
2. The Doors
Answer: Waiting for the Sun
The Doors had six Top Ten albums on the U.S. charts, but only 1968's "Waiting for the Sun" reached number one. Their 1967 debut album, "The Doors" reached number two and the follow-up "Strange Days" reached number three. None of the Doors' albums even reached the Top Ten in the U.K.
Their debut album, "The Doors" ended up being their best-selling album, receiving four times Platinum status in the U.S.
3. David Bowie
Answer: Blackstar
Surprisingly, David Bowie released 25 studio albums, but he didn't reach number one on the U.S. charts until his final album, 2016's "Blackstar". Prior to that, he had reached number two with 2013's "The Next Day", number three with 1976's "Station to Station", and number four with 1983's "Let's Dance".
His albums fared better in the U.K. where he scored number one hits with "Aladdin Sane", "Pin Ups", "Diamond Dogs", "Scary Monsters", "Let's Dance", "Tonight", "Black Tie White Noise", "The Next Day", and "Blackstar".
4. The Police
Answer: Synchronicity
The Police only released five studio albums, and it was their last one, 1983's "Synchronicity" that topped the U.S. charts. 1981's "Ghost in the Machine" reached number two, and 1980's "Zenyatta Mondatta" reached number five in the U.S. All of their albums reached number one in the U.K. with the exception of their 1978 debut album "Outlandos d'Amour", which reached number six. "Synchronicity" turned out to be their best-selling album in the U.S., being certified as 8x Platinum.
5. Dire Straits
Answer: Brothers in Arms
Dire Straits just missed the number one spot, coming in at number two on the U.S. charts with their 1978 self-titled debut album. But it was their 1985 hit "Brothers in Arms" that gave them their only U.S. number one album, and it reached number one in several other countries including (West) Germany, France, Australia, and New Zealand.
In the U.K., Dire Strait's last three albums, "Love Over Gold", "Brothers in Arms", and "On Every Street", all reached number one. "Brothers in Arms" turned out to be the band's best-selling album in the U.S., being certified nine times Platinum.
6. Neil Young
Answer: Harvest
Neil Young released over thirty solo albums, but only 1972's "Harvest" reached number one on the U.S. charts. His 2012 album "Americana" with the backing band Crazy Horse was the nearest he managed to the top of the charts other than "Harvest", reaching number four in the U.S. "Harvest" was also his only U.K. number one.
The album was also his best-selling album in the U.S., receiving four times Platinum status.
7. Cream
Answer: Wheels of Fire
1968's "Wheels of Fire" was a two-disc album, with one disc being live and the other being a studio recording (I'm counting the studio disc here). The Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Jack Bruce trio only released four albums, with their final album "Goodbye", another live/studio mix, reaching number two on the U.S. charts.
Besides reaching number one on the charts, "Wheels of Fire" also became the first double-album to reach Platinum status in the U.S., just beating out the Beatles' white album by a few months. "Wheels of Fire" only reached number three in the U.K., but the band's "Goodbye" album topped the charts there.
8. Jim Croce
Answer: You Don't Mess Around with Jim
Jim Croce only released five studio albums, with the first two not even charting, but his third album, 1972's "You Don't Mess Around with Jim", was his number one hit. His posthumous album, "I Got a Name", was released a few months following his 1973 death in a plane crash, and it reached number two on the U.S. charts. None of his albums charted in the U.K.
9. Queen
Answer: The Game
It wasn't until 1980's "The Game", which featured "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" that Queen topped the U.S. album charts. 1975's "A Night at the Opera", 1976's "A Day at the Races", and 1977's "News of the World" reached numbers four, five, and three, respectively, in the U.S. Queen fared better in the U.K., topping the album charts with "A Night at the Opera", "A Day at the Races", "The Game", "A Kind of Magic", "The Miracle", "Innuendo", and "Made in Heaven". "The Game" was also Queen's best-selling album in the U.S., being certified 4x Platinum.
10. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
Answer: Deja Vu
Released in 1970 by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, "Deja Vu" was the group's only number one album in the U.S., although their 1977 effort "CSN" released by Crosby, Stills and Nash reached number two. None of their eight studio albums under either grouping reached the top of the charts in the U.K. "Deja Vu", which included the songs "Woodstock" and "Teach Your Children", was also their best-selling album in the U.S., being certified 7x Platinum.
