Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Klaatu took their name from which classic 1951 film?

Answer: "The Day The Earth Stood Still"

Michael Rennie starred as the alien visitor Klaatu, who came to Earth along with his 10 foot tall robot, Gort. His basic message was to tell the people to cease their violent behaviour towards each other.
2. From which country did the band originate?

Answer: Canada

The members of the band, John Woloschuk, Terry Draper, and Dee Long, were all from Toronto. They formed Klaatu in 1973.
3. The band's first album caused a bit of a storm, as it was rumoured to be a secret album recorded by which famous band?

Answer: The Beatles

A journalist from the "Providence Rhode Island Journal" is alleged to have been the first to say that Klaatu sounded like the Beatles.
The rumours spread, and soon debates as to who the band behind the album really was. It didn't help that there were no band members listed as either musicians or writers on the record sleeve.
4. The Carpenters had a hit single with a track off of that first Klaatu album. What was the title of this 1977 hit?

Answer: "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft"

The song reached number 32 in America, and number 9 in the UK.
It certainly performed better for the Carpenters then it did for Klaatu!
5. In 1979, the band made an animated film. What was it called?

Answer: "Happy New Year, Planet Earth"

Little is known about this film, as very few have seen it. As of 2003, it remains un-released. Perhaps one day ...
6. The band only toured once, in 1981. On whose concert tour were they the support band?

Answer: Prism

Prism were fellow Canadians, and both bands apparently went down very well. Wish I'd seen it!
7. Klaatu's fourth album shared its title with albums recorded by artists such as Des'Ree, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Man, Pcyche, and UK Subs. What was its title?

Answer: "Endangered Species"

It must be a very popular title for albums, as I think there have been others! "Gimme Back My Bullets" is a Lynyrd Skynyrd album, "Slow Motion" was recorded by Man, and "Flood Of Lies" is a UK Subs title.
8. Excluding compilations, how many albums did Klaatu release?

Answer: 5

The albums were: "3.47 EST", "Hope", "Sir Army Suit", "Endangered Species", and "Magentalane". All have been re-issued on CD, and are easily available.
9. Klaatu recorded the theme to a German TV show called "Tatort", about a female cop. This was issued as a single by the band in 1988. What was it called?

Answer: "Woman"

The band, having split in 1982, reunited especially for this song.
It wasn't a hit!
10. Two "Best Of" compilations of Klaatu's work were issued. "Klaasic Klaatu" was released in 1982, but what was the title of the 1993 compilation?

Answer: "Peaks"

Both are a good introduction to Klaatu's music, and showcase this often overlooked band's music.
