Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Identify which Marling song is represented by the following lyrics: "I threw creation to my kin, with a silence broken by a whispered wind".

Answer: Devil's Spoke

"Devil's Spoke" was the opening track off of Marling's 2010 release "I Speak Because I Can". Her prior release, the debut disc "Alas, I Cannot Swim", was released in 2008. Both were nominated for the Mercury Prize, an honor bestowed on the best disc released in the UK in any given year.
2. "Clutching pictures of past lovers at his side". In which song of hers can we find these very poignant lyrics?

Answer: Ghosts

Laura was born on February 1, 1980, in the English town of Eversley, which is located in the southern coastal county of Hampshire, England. Her music can be considered neo-folk, a movement which she spearheaded along with acts such as Mumford and Sons and Noah and The Whale, a band she was once a part of before going solo.
3. Which of her songs has these very descriptive lyrics: "Well, I own this field, and I wrote this sky, and I have no reason to reason with you"?

Answer: Blackberry Stone

Laura is not only a very skilled lyricist, but is also a very skilled fingerpicking acoustic guitarist, the main instrument contained in her music. Together, they are what make her music so real and straight from the heart.
4. In which of her songs would we find these lyrics, which depict a certain element of nature as being very old: "10,000 years and you're still on your own"?

Answer: Old Stone

This track can be found on her debut release "Alas, I Cannot Swim". Its album cover depicts various elements of nature, ranging from birds to leaves, butterflies, an alligator, and flowers, all steeped in various shades of orange and red.
5. Which Marling track contains the following lyric line: "...Let it always be known that I was who I am"?

Answer: Rambling Man

At first glance, you might think that this is a cover of the song made famous by iconic American country songwriter Johnny Cash, but it is all her own doing. Laura pens all of the lyrics that appear on her albums.
6. Which song contains these very assertive lyrics? "I'm sorry young man, I cannot be your friend. I don't believe in a fairytale end".

Answer: My Manic and I

The first release of her music in any format occurred in 2007. That year she released an EP called "London Town".
7. "But sadly not me, your last serving daughter". In which of her songs can we encounter these lines?

Answer: Hope in the Air

This song was a featured track on "I Speak Because I Can". On this album, we find contribution from Marcus Mumford, a member of the English neo-folk quartet Mumford and Sons. These two acts toured the US in 2010 during a nearly identical time frame, although they did not tour together. I'm not really sure what the reason was.
8. Here are more great lyrics of Laura's to ponder: "... And the house that you perform in, is crumbling at the corners". What song contains these great words?

Answer: Cross Your Fingers

Once again, a track with more of her great visual imagery. She does such a great job painting pictures with her words. One interesting event happened when she was still a minor and got banned from playing her own show in a club. She decided that the fans should get what they paid for, and so she played by the street outside of the club. Laura's a true artist!
9. In what song are these lyrics found: "I swear it was not my choice. I used to be so kind"?

Answer: I Speak Because I Can

This was the self-titled track from her second album. The song title appeared in the track several times. In addition to her accomplishment of being a double nominee for the Mercury Prize for both discs, she was a winner of the Best Female Solo Artist award at the 2011 Brit Awards. This award show is their equivalent of the American Grammy Awards.
10. As a parting salvo, here is a final selection of her lyrics to ponder: "And I think he knew where I was going, he put Bryan Adams on. I think he thinks it makes me weak but it only makes me strong." What song contains these lyrics?

Answer: New Romantic

She discovered the folk genre through the influence of her father at a very young age. Her father worked at a recording studio in her youth.
