Leave It In - Nobody Will Notice Quiz

Why would an artist leave a mistake in the final take of a song they record? Who knows? But since I first noticed a mistake in one of my favorite songs many years ago I've been surprised at the number of recordings having errors in them.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. That first record I remember containing a mistake was a hit in the US in December of 1963. Two minutes into the song, following the guitar break, singer Jack Ely started to sing the third verse too early. His error became such a recognizable part of the song that the band left it in their live performances. What 'dirty' song peaked at Number Two despite a blatant error in the recording?

Answer: Louie Louie

Kingsmen band members had pitched in to pay $50 for the recording session. It could be they didn't have time to correct the error.
Ely's vocal on The Kingsmen's hit was so muddled that people assumed he was masking obscene lyrics. The FBI actually conducted a lengthy investigation resulting in an admission that they couldn't understand the lyrics, either.
In 2007 Rolling Stone ranked "Louie Louie" number five on its list of 40 Songs That Changed The World.
2. What couple's names did Paul McCartney confuse when The Beatles recorded "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"?

Answer: Desmond and Molly

"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" was included on the 'White' album in 1968 but not released as a single in the US or UK. McCartney wrote the song in a light, bouncy reggae style, telling the story of Desmond, who "has a barrow in the marketplace" and his love, Molly, "the singer in a band".
Recording the final verse, Paul confused the names and sang "in the market place Molly lets the children lend a hand" while "Desmond stays at home and does his pretty face." It seems the other Beatles (who reportedly hated the song) talked Paul into leaving the mistake in the recording.
3. At 2:45 into this Michael Jackson hit a studio technician didn't realize the studio was in use and knocked on the door. The knock is quite audible just before a great guitar solo by Eddie Van Halen. Which song includes the knock?

Answer: Beat It

There are three versions of what caused the knocking sound. A knock on the door, Van Halen knocking on his guitar, and Michael Jackson pounding on a drum case. To me it sounds like a knock on a door so I'm sticking with that story.
4. Which Beatle shouts "I've got blisters on my fingers" at the end of "Helter Skelter"?

Answer: Ringo

While "The Beatles" (The White album) was being recorded, "Helter Skelter" proved a tough song to complete. Early, bluesy versions were scrapped and the more manic style of the final take required as many as 18 takes to complete. Ringo was ready to quit.
5. Just two seconds into the intro of "Why Can't We Be Friends?" the pianist clearly hits a discordant note. What 70s funk band of low riders decided the sour note wasn't that bad and left it in?

Answer: War

War had a lot of recording success in the 70s and early 80s. Their album "The World Is A Ghetto" was the top seller of 1973. Lonnie Jordan, the pianist who hit the wrong note, is the only original member still with the group.
6. "You're Driving Me Crazy" is a bouncy tune from the 30s. When a certain blue-eyed crooner from Hoboken recorded his version a lyric caused him to stumble. Who changed "hurt" to "hoit" but decided to leave it in the final take?

Answer: Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra's records, especially when he worked with arranger Nelson Riddle, were pretty much letter perfect. Not so with "You're Driving Me Crazy" though. After the instrumental break, Frank meant to sing "Who would hurt me, desert me / When I needed you". Somehow it came out "Who would hoyt- uh / hurtmedesertme when I needed you" but it was good enough to leave it.
7. 1990 has been called "the year rap exploded into the mainstream". Public Enemy's album "Fear Of A Black Planet" helped trigger that explosion. The title track was less than perfect, though. Which singer flubbed the line featuring the song's message of racial harmony and understanding?

Answer: Chuck D

Chuck D tongue-twisted not only the words but the message of the song when "All I want is peace and love on this planet / Ain't that how God planned it?" became "All I want is peace and love on this planet / Ain't how that God planned it?"
In 1987 Chuck had twisted lyrics of the band's hit "Bring The Noise" when "The ride, the glide / Should be much safer than a suicide" became "The ride, the glide / Much should be safer than a suicide".
8. "Tell Her No" was a Number six hit in the US for a mellow British Invasion band. A sleepy lead singer turned the lyric "Don't take her love from my arms" into "Don't flubba dub fong your arms" (or something like that). Which band became "The Walking Dead" for a minute?

Answer: The Zombies

Singer Colin Blunstone later said the recording session went into the early morning hours and he was sleepwalking through the take of "Tell Her No". Drowsiness gave his performance an interesting mix of plaintive and detached.
9. Recording a cover of a Black Sabbath hit for 1994's "Nativity In Black" tribute album, this band recorded "Paranoid" in one take. But when the song ended drummer Nick Menza thought there was another verse and kept drumming. Singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine yells "Dave, Dave" to stop him and it's all left on the record. Which band suffered from this failure to communicate?

Answer: Megadeth

You have to listen very carefully to hear Menza's obscene response picked up by the overhead drum microphone.
"Paranoid" was also included in Megadeth's 1995 EP "Hidden Treasures".
10. Recording this Police hit, Sting sits on a piano keyboard at the :04 mark and laughs about it a couple of seconds later. In which song did the singer remind his girl that "You don't have to put on the red light?"

Answer: Roxanne

I had probably heard "Roxanne" a few hundred times when this gaffe was pointed out to me. Now, like most of these recorded mistakes, I can't un-hear it.
According to guitarist Andy Summers, "real musicians can tell he's playing more from the left buttock than the right."
