Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On "Led Zeppelin III", between "Friends" and "Celebration Day", there is a loud droning sound. Why did Jimmy Page add that in?

Answer: The original master tapes were damaged and the repairs needed to be hidden

The problem was that the tapes were crinkled and could not go through the tape heads. Because of the damage to the master tapes, the song was almost left off the album, but the damaged section was re-done, with the loud drone to cover the repairs.
2. What inspired the sound for "Fool in the Rain"?

Answer: The 1978 World Cup in Argentina

Jimmy Page was inspired by the Samba beats he heard in the background of the 1978 World Cup. Jimmy wrote the middle section, with the whistle, before the recording sessions and John Paul Jones added in the beginning and end parts at the studio.
3. What musician, who was killed "The Day the Music Died", inspired "Boogie with Stu"?

Answer: Ritchie Valens

The line "Ooh my head!" is actually the name of a Ritchie Valens song that heavily inspired "Boogie with Stu". When the band wrote the song, they gave a song credit to Ritchie's mom, since the band felt sorry she never received royalties from his hits. Led Zeppelin ended up being sued by Ritchie's publishing company and the case was settled out of court.
4. Which of the following is a rumor as to the inspiration for "Nobody's Fault But Mine"?

Answer: All of these choices

At the time this album was written, the band was in a downward spiral. All of the troubles and rumors surrounding the band had finally begun to show their effect. However, Page and Plant still testify that "Presence" is their favorite album and their best work, since the trials and tribulation showed the "true" Led Zeppelin, musically.
5. What is the "Houses of the Holy" (album and song) a reference to?

Answer: Venues where the band performed

This song and title of the fifth album are a tribute to the arenas and auditoriums to which their fans always showed their support. Ironically, the song was never played live!
6. Who dedicated "Thank You" to his wife?

Answer: Robert Plant

Not only did Robert dedicate this ballad to his wife, Maureen, it was the first song Robert wrote all of the lyrics by himself.
7. Which one of these songs from Led Zeppelin III was removed from Led Zeppelin II in order to fit "Whole Lotta Love"?

Answer: Since I've Been Loving You

When Led Zeppelin's second album was being mixed, the last two songs on the chopping block were "Since I've Been Loving You" and "Whole Lotta Love". The band decided that "Whole Lotta Love" fit in better with the rest of the album.
8. Which song was recorded and meant to be released as a single to show Led Zeppelin could still rock in the late 1970's?

Answer: Wearing and Tearing

Towards the end of the 70's, Led Zeppelin had been referred to as "dinosaurs" by music critics. Page and Plant wanted to prove they could still rock with the Punks and wrote this song to prove it, even as "dinosaurs". Plant wanted to release the song as a Led Zeppelin single, but Page had the idea to release it as a fake Punk band, just to see how much it would sell.
9. Which of the following songs has Jimmy Page using a violin bow on his acoustic guitar?

Answer: In the Light

The low droning at the beginning of the song is the violin bow on the acoustic guitar. Page perfected the technique of using a violin bow on a guitar, in his day with The Yardbirds. The effect can be heard, with an electric guitar, on the Led Zeppelin songs: "Dazed and Confused", "How Many More Times" and "In the Evening"
10. On the vinyl of the first album, the length of "How Many More Times" is wrong. (The song is listed as 3:30, but is actually 8:28) Why is it wrong?

Answer: In order to get the song radio play

Jimmy Page understood that "How Many More Times" was a good song. But at over 8 minutes, it would never be played on radio. He intentionally changed the time to get radio stations to play the song.
