Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Woodstock - 1969

Answer: Richie Havens

In 1969, at Bethel, New York, a music concert was held which changed everything. Woodstock featured such luminaries of the day as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who, Jefferson Airplane and many others. Richie Havens' performance opened the show, set the tone and held the crowd for three hours (while other musicians were delayed reaching the site). Among his songs were "From the Prison", "High Flying Bird", and "Freedom (Motherless Child)".
2. Central Park - 1981

Answer: Simon and Garfunkel

One of the most popular duos of the 1960s and 1970, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel created such unforgettable songs as "The Sound of Silence" and "Bridge over Troubled Water". Sadly, they then went their separate ways until their September 1981 reunion, i.e., The Concert in Central Park. The concert was a free benefit where they performed for more than 500,000 spectators.
3. Wembley Stadium, London - 1985

Answer: Phil Collins

On July 13, 1985, a benefit concert called Live Aid was performed for Ethiopian famine relief. It was organized by Bob Geldorf and Midge Ure, and performed at two venues, Philadelphia at JFK Stadium and London. Phil Collins appeared on both sides of the Atlantic (via Concorde), performing "Against All Odds" and "In the Air Tonight".

Other performers included Elvis Costello, David Bowie, U2 and Madonna.
4. International Hotel, Las Vegas - 1969

Answer: Elvis Presley

In July 31, 1969, after not having appeared in Las Vegas for 13 years, Elvis was making his 'comeback' at the largest showroom in Las Vegas, Nevada. Elvis was paid $500,000 for four weeks at the new International Hotel. At 33 years old, Presley's show was a sell-out and "The King" was back in all his glory. Among the songs he performed were "Love Me Tender", "Jailhouse Rock" and the debut of "Suspicious Minds".
5. Newport Folk Festival - 1965

Answer: Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan has been a musical icon for over five decades, winning over fifteen Grammy Awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016. Way back on July 25, 1965, Dylan went 'electric' when he appeared at the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island.

Some folk music purists actually booed him but he continued to perform his new song "Like a Rolling Stone". He sang just two more songs, left the stage and came back later with an acoustic guitar to perform "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue".
6. Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro - 1994

Answer: Rod Stewart

On New Year's Eve, 1994, Rod Stewart performed at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. The show was listed in "The Guinness Book of World Records" as the largest free rock concert, with an estimated attendance of 3.5 million people. The setlist for the concert included "Hot Legs", "Maggie May', "You're in My Heart" and "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?".
7. Shea Stadium - 1965

Answer: The Beatles

On August 15, 1965, "The Fab Four" (John, Paul, George and Ringo) performed at Shea Stadium, a ballpark used by the NY Mets and located in Queens, NY. They sang in front of over 55,000 screaming fans (most under the age of 21). On the infield diamond they belted out songs which included "Ticket to Ride", "Can't Buy Me Love" and "I Feel Fine".
8. The Apollo Theater - 1962

Answer: James Brown

The Apollo Theater is a renowned music hall in Harlem, New York City, famous for performances by noted African American musicians. On October 24, 1962 James Brown, "the Godfather of Soul", recorded the album "Live At the Apollo". The album has been ranked 25th on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 best albums of all time.

The live concert and the album included "I'll Go Crazy", "Night Train" and "Lost Someone".
9. Monterey Pop - 1967

Answer: The Mamas and The Papas

The Monterey International Pop Festival was the music festival that started it all - the pre-Woodstock concert featuring all the big names of the music scene of the 'sixties'. From June 16-18, 1967, the three day event was held in Monterey, California and helped spark "The Summer of Love". Featured performers included The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Otis Redding and The Mamas and the Papas.

The Mamas and the Papas sang "California Dreamin'", "Spanish Harlem" and "Somebody Groovy".
10. Altamont - 1969

Answer: The Rolling Stones

On December 6, 1969, The Altamont Speedway Free Festival was held in Northern California. Altamont was supposed to be the West Coast's answer to Woodstock. The scheduled acts included Santana, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, the Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead, with the Rolling Stones as the headliners.

Unfortunately, members of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang were hired as security staff. As the Stones were singing "Under My Thumb", a member of the audience was stabbed to death by a Hells Angel.
