Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Keith Richards was the youngest member of the Rolling Stones' original line-up. In what year was he born?

Answer: 1943

Keith was born to parents Doris and Bert Richards on December 18, 1943. Bert was an electrical engineer and Doris demonstrated washing machines. Keith is an only child.
2. What job did Keith have for four days during the winter of 1961?

Answer: mailman

Gee, was mailman the one you least expected, or did you see through my little trick? Keith is a Rock 'n Roll guitar player and singer. He was never cut out for anything else.
3. It's fairly common knowledge that Mick Jagger was the first Stones bandmate that Keith ever met. Who was the second?

Answer: Brian Jones

Mick and Keith were "sandbox mates" in early childhood. After not seeing each other for a few years, they met again at Dartford train station in London. Mick was carrying a bunch of American blues and rock n' roll records that were hard to get in England.

This enthralled Keith, and the two of them re-kindled their friendship through music. The two first met guitarist Brian Jones after watching him perform under the name Elmo James at Ealing Jazz Club in April, 1962. Jones had already met drummer Charlie Watts.
4. What was the first Rolling Stones song to be sung entirely by Keith?

Answer: You Got the Silver

Keith sang just the introduction to "Salt of the Earth", from "Beggars Banquet" in 1968. He sang lead on all of the others, but "You Got the Silver", from the "Let it Bleed" album in 1969, came first.
5. Can you finish this Keith Richards quote? "At least I never turned blue in anyone's bathroom. I mean.."

Answer: "I consider that the height of bad manners."

This is just one of many hilarious quotes attributed to Keith. Another classic is: "I never had a problem with drugs, just with cops."
6. Keith was once punched in the face by his idol, Chuck Berry, after he saw Berry in public and tapped him on the shoulder.

Answer: True

Berry claimed that he didn't know who it was at first and later apologized. However, Richards claims that Berry also once "accidentally" dropped a lit cigarette down his shirt and once physically shoved him off a stage. After that third incident Keith told a reporter, "The next time he has one of his little accidents I'm gonna clobber him. Hero worship only goes so far!"
7. Who once told Keith, "I could have written 'Satisfaction', but you couldn't have written 'Like a Rolling Stone'."

Answer: Bob Dylan

Keith's response to Dylan's conceit was: "He's lucky he left with all of his teeth. He was right, of course, but he was lucky."
8. What was the name of the band Keith joined to play a benefit concert for the blind in 1978?

Answer: The New Barbarians

Keith was sentenced to perform a benefit concert as part of his "punishment" for being caught with large amounts of heroin and cocaine. More of that story can be found on my "Rolling With The Stones" quiz. The band stayed together for a while and played more concerts. The X-Pensive Winos is a band Keith formed about a decade later.
9. What's the name of the song Keith wrote and sang in an angry response to Mick Jagger putting his solo career ahead of the Stones?

Answer: You Don't Move Me

This is one of my favorite solo songs of Keith's. It can be found on his "Talk is Cheap" album, which was released in 1988. And no, Keith never wrote a song called "I Hate Mick Jagger".
10. Which Rolling Stones song, originally sung by Mick Jagger but written by Keith Richards, includes the following lines? "The bags of mine get a very close inspection. I wonder why it is that they suspect 'em."

Answer: Connection

This is a great Stones oldie and can be found on their "Between the Buttons" album from 1967. A great live version of the song, sung by Keith and performed by the X-Pensive Winos can be found on their album "Live at the Hollywood Palladium".
