Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In April, 1964, The Rolling Stones released "The Rolling Stones" in the UK. The following month "England's Newest Hit Makers, The Rolling Stones" was released in the US. Which opening song on side one of the US released song, credited to Petty and Hardin as songwriters, was absent from the UK released album?

Answer: Not Fade Away

"Not Fade Away" was not included on the original UK release. Both albums featured the same cover photograph with different graphics. "Not Fade Away" was one of the cuts released as a single. It made the Top Ten in the UK but only reached Number 48 in the US. "Not Fade Away" was written by Buddy Holly under his first and middle names, Charles Hardin.

It was co-written by Norman Petty and recorded by Holly with The Crickets in May, 1957. "Route 66" was the second cut on side one on the US album and led off side one on the UK release. "I'm A King Bee" and "Little By Little" were included on both LPs.
2. What was the only song on the band's US debut album, "England's Newest Hit Makers, The Rolling Stones", to be composed by the songwriting team of Jagger and Richard?

Answer: Tell Me

"Tell Me" was later listed as "Tell Me (You're Coming Back)", but was simply listed as "Tell Me" on the original US released album. The single reached Number 24 on the US Billboard charts. The credits did not include the "s" on Keith's last name on the songwriting credits or with his photograph on the US version.
"Now I've Got A Witness" was credited to Phelge and Phil Spector. Nanker Phelge was a pseudonym for songs composed as a collaborative effort by the band.
"Can I Get a Witness" was written by the Motown songwriting team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland and was a 1963 Motown single by Marvin Gaye.
"Honest I Do" was made popular by Jimmy Reed and composed by David Hurran and Reg Calvert.
3. Which American singer/songwriter played piano on "Little by Little", an album cut featured on the Rolling Stones' first US released album?

Answer: Gene Pitney

Gene Pitney played piano on the track and also had a UK hit with "That Girl Belongs to Yesterday", a tune composed by Jagger and Richards. In the US the song only made it to Number 49, ending a streak of several Top Forty hits for Pitney stateside.
Leon Russell was a member of Phil Spector's legendary "wall of sound" musicians. Phil played maracas on "Little by Little". Jack Nitzsche also worked with Spector and contributed keyboard parts on the Rolling Stones' "Aftermath" album.
There was speculation in 2008 that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards would collaborate on an album with Jerry Lee Lewis, but Lewis never did studio work for the band in the sixties.
4. In October, 1964, the Rolling Stones released their second album in the US, "12X5". Which cover of a Chuck Berry song kicked off side one of the album?

Answer: Around and Around

While the Rolling Stones have recorded several Chuck Berry compositions, "Around and Around" was selected as the first song on side one of "12X5". The album featured five songs credited to either Jagger and Richards or the band pseudonym, Nanker Phelge.

The LP made the US Top Ten album chart. A song from the album credited to Norman Meade, "Time is on My Side", became the group's first Top Ten single in the US. There were two versions of the intro recorded, one with organ and one with guitar. The version with Ian Stewart on organ was included on "12X5". "Talkin' 'Bout You" was a Chuck Berry cut from their "Out of Our Heads" album. "Carol" was a Chuck Berry song recorded for their first album and the Stones' recorded a cover of Berry's "You Can't Catch Me" on their "The Rolling Stones Now!" LP.
5. Which 1966 US released album was the first by The Rolling Stones to consist entirely of songs written by Jagger/Richards or members of the band?

Answer: Aftermath

"Aftermath" was the first album to include all material written by members of the band and also included several single releases such as "Mother's Little Helper", "19th Nervous Breakdown", "Paint It, Black" and "Lady Jane". The album was released in the UK and the US under the same title but recorded entirely at RCA Studios in Hollywood, California.

In addition to his guitar and keyboard work, Brian Jones demonstrated his musical versatility by playing dulcimer, sitar, marimbas and harmonica on various tracks. Jack Nitzsche and Ian Stewart also played keys. "Between the Buttons" and "Their Satanic Majesties Request" also contained all original material but were released after "Aftermath". "December's Children (And Everybody's)" included seven Jagger/Richards composition as well as live versions of Hank Snow's "I'm Moving On" and Bobby Troup's "Route 66".
6. In September, 1965, "Get Off of My Cloud" became the second US Number One single by The Rolling Stones. Which album contained the song?

Answer: December's Children (And Everybody's)

"Get Off of My Cloud" was the first track on side two of "December's Children (And Everybody's)", the band's fifth US released album. "Get Off of My Cloud" became the second US Number One for the Stones. ("I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", from their US released "Out of Our Heads" LP was their first. The "December's Children (And Everybody's)" album also contained the group's version of Mick and Keith's "As Tears Go By", also recorded by Marianne Faithful.
"Beggars Banquet" was released in 1968.
7. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards composed "It's All Over Now" on the band's "12X5" album.

Answer: False

"It's All Over Now" was written by Bobby and Shirley Womack and recorded by The Valentinos when Bobby and other members of the Womacks were part of the group. In 1964 their version dented the charts for two weeks, only reaching number 94.
Nine days after New York DJ Murray the K played the song for the Stones they recorded their own version at Chess Studios in Chicago. It became the groups third US single and peaked at Number 26.
The group was filmed performing the song during the 1964 concert film, "The T.A.M.I. Show".
8. The Rolling Stones' manager is credited for writing the liner notes for the "12X5"" album, "England's Newest Hit Makers The Rolling Stones" and "The Rolling Stones Now". What was their manager's name during this period?

Answer: Andrew Loog Oldham

Flamboyant promoter Andrew Loog Oldham was originally a press agent for British and US Rock and Roll acts appearing in the UK. He also worked for producers Joe Meek and Brian Epstein. While he was assisting Brian in promoting The Beatles someone suggested that he check out a Rolling Stones performance. He was impressed with the group and eventually obtained a record deal with Decca Records through Dick Rowe, the A and R man who had previously declined to sign The Beatles.
Oldham also strongly encouraged Jagger and Richards to compose their own material while grooming the band's image as the bad boys of Rock and Roll. In 1966 he sold his interest in the band to Allen Klein and ended his relationship with the band the following year.
Some of the bands that Mickey Most produced included The Arrows, The Animals, Herman's Hermits and Donovan.
9. Which Rolling Stones album was released the same year as the Beatles' "White Album" and featured a white cover with the title of the album and "RSVP" on the front?

Answer: Beggars Banquet

The Rolling Stones wanted a lavatory wall with graffiti as the cover but relented and went with the white cover for "Beggar's Banquet". Decca Records and London Records strenuously objected to the original cover art concept. In 1984 the album was mastered for CD re-release and the original graffiti cover art was used.

In 1969 The Rolling Stones filmed "Rock and Roll Circus" as a vehicle to promote the album. The project was shelved and wasn't released until the mid-nineties. "Their Satanic Majesties Request" album featured the group dressed in garb similar to the Beatles on their "Sgt. Pepper" album. "Between the Buttons" featured a photo of the band in a nature setting. "Let it Bleed"'s cover had pastry and a record turntable on the cover.
10. Which 1969 simultaneous US and UK release was the final album released by the Rolling Stones in the sixties?

Answer: Let It Bleed

On December 5th, 1969, "Let it Bleed" was officially released. It remained on the US album charts for 44 weeks and got as high as the Number Three position. One of the notable tracks was "You Can't Always Get What You Want". The London Bach Choir sang the intro, arranged by Jack Nitzsche. Producer Jimmy Miller took over on drums from Charlie Watts on the song and Al Kooper played horn, piano and organ. American singer Doris Troy was on backing vocals. "Let it Bleed" was also the final album on which Brian Jones recorded tracks. "Sticky Fingers" was the first album on the band's own label and hit the shelves in 1971. "Beggars Banquet" had a December, 1968, release date and "Goats Head Soup" came out in 1973.
