Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who sang "Where Were You When I Needed You"?

Answer: The Grass Roots

This was the first hit, released in 1966, for the San Francisco based rockers with the tight arrangements and dynamic lead vocals by Rob Grill. The song was written by P.F. Sloane, an excellent song writer who penned "Eve Of Destruction," "Secret Agent Man," and various charted songs for The Turtles, The Searchers, and Herman's Hermits, among others. (all release dates are U.S. Billboard Top 40, unless otherwise noted)
2. "Where Did Our Love Go," was what?

Answer: The Supremes first number one hit

The Supremes became the preeminent girl group in the Motown stable, arguably because the man in charge of Motown Records, Berry Gordy, gave them more publicity and favored status in the studio. There is no denying the commercial and crossover appeal of the group, whose polished image and smooth sound appealed to white audiences and adults across a broad spectrum. For more soul and great vocal performances, check out Martha and the Vandellas or the Marvelettes on some of the lesser known Motown cuts.
3. This love song with a deja vu theme asks a question in its title. What is it?

Answer: Where or When

"It seems we've stood and talked like this before. We looked at each other in the same way then, but I can't remember where or when." Those are the opening lines from "Where or When," originally from the 1937 musical "Babes In Arms," by Rogers and Hart.

Many have recorded it but I'm partial to Dion and the Belmonts version, which reached number three on Billboard Hot 100 in January, 1960.
4. According to Pete Seeger, "Where Have All the Flowers Gone"?

Answer: Young girls picked them, every one

Pete Seeger, icon for the whole folk song era and hero to folkies to this day, is responsible for this simple, beautiful folk anthem. He got the idea and a few lines of it in the fifties from a Cossack folk song, and a Russian novel titled "And Quiet Flows the Don."
5. Three statements regarding the song, "Where the Boys Are" are true. Pick the one that is FALSE

Answer: Duet sung by Elvis Presley and Doris Day

One of twenty five top 40 Billboard chart hits between 1958-1964 for Connie Francis, "pop music's top female recording artist" from that period, according to Joel Whitburn, Billboard top 40 researcher. She was signed to star in the movie, then got Neil Sedaka to write the song for her. Definitely a campy period film, from 1960, about college kids on spring break in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and the moral dilemmas facing ragingly hormonal young people thrown together without supervision. Highlight of film: Frank Gorshin losing his glasses and falling into a fish tank with a stripper.
6. Where did the Rolling Stones take us on "Their Satanic Majesties Request" (album)?

Answer: 2000 Light Years From Home

Correct answer, "2000 Light Years From Home", is a song from the Stone's studio album released in December 1967 in the UK and the USA. Like the Beatles, the Stones at this juncture were experimenting with drugs, eastern mysticism, and non-traditional instruments such as the sitar. Far out, man. Red herrings: "Under the Boardwalk"- benign feel good Drifters song; Galaxy- you must have seen "Star Wars"; "Where the Devil Resides"- Stones perhaps took us there, also, but that was at Altamont, in the real world, not on an album.
7. "Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)" Who sang it and what's it about?

Answer: Peter Sarstedt/ young girl escapes poverty, joins jet set

The correct answer is Peter Sarstedt. This is a great song. It only reached number 70 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA, but was a number one hit for four weeks in the UK in 1969. I first became aware of it as a lead-in at the beginning of the Wes Anderson's indie movie "The Darjeeling Limited." The song details the rise of a poor street waif in Naples who becomes a beautiful jet-setter and travels Europe, rubbing elbows with royalty and famous artistes.

It's told from the perspective of her brother, laced with irony and sarcasm, as he knows who she really is, where she came from, and where she goes "in her head." It includes all kinds of references to fashion, celebrity names and culture (e.g.

The Rolling Stones, Picasso, the Sorbonne, Juan-les-Pins) which are fascinating to pick out and research.
8. Which real artist released a version of "Where is the Love"?

Answer: Black Eyed Peas

Black Eyed Peas are the only real recording artist listed. They are an American hip hop group. This song was released in 2003, with Fergie, whoever she is, singing lead for the first time. Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway released a different song by this name in 1972.

The boy band Hanson released "Where's the Love," off their album "Middle of Nowhere," in 1997. If I got ya with the String Beans, you're not a serious music lover. Sorry.
9. This singer/actress was born in Wembley, England and recorded "Right Back Where We Started From" in 1976.

Answer: Maxine Nightingale

Maxine is the daughter of Guyanese comedian Benny Nightingale. She experienced early show biz success playing Sheila in the musical "Hair" in 1969 in London. She was born in 1952.
10. Now for a change of pace. WHERE did the Beatles play their last live, scheduled concert?

Answer: Candlestick Park, San Francisco, 1966

It was Candlestick Park, present home of NFL football's SF 49ers and former home of the SF Giants baseball club. The concert was somewhat anticlimactic, as the group sensed touring was becoming a drag, knew the end was near. John especially was fed up with it. Of course over the next three years in the studio, and despite fragmentation of the group, the Beatles produced some of the finest and most original rock music ever.

The live performance on the roof of the Apple studio did occur, but it was very much unscheduled, and was only heard by a few fortunate passersby on their lunch hour on the street below.

They were rehearsing for the "Let it Be" documentary.
