Answer: The Beatles

There were several Lennon-McCartney compositions with the word "love" in the title. For example, the Beatles had hits with "She Loves You" (fairly recently sung to William and Kate by their guests at the Royal Wedding reception in the UK in 2011), and ""All You Need is Love", which became an anthem for the counterculture in the sixties.

Answer: The Everly Brothers

"Love of the Common People" was written by the team of Hurley and Wilkins. It was covered by many different artists; a well-known US version was recorded by Don and Phil Everly. There was a big UK record sung by the soul-influenced Paul Young, that many people still recall.

Answer: Elvis Presley

No mistaking the voice of The King on this one. Amazingly, during the early part of his career, Elvis didn't think he could sing, and jokingly told a radio interviewer that it was good when the fans screamed, as it covered up his vocals and "sour" notes.

Answer: Jefferson Airplane

This song is from the famous album entitled "Surrealistic Pillow". Jefferson Airplane's lead singer at the time, with very powerful pipes, was Grace Slick. Don't confuse this one with the Queen hit "Somebody To Love", or the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody"!

"Love Is Strange" was a big hit for the duo known as Mickey and Sylvia. Of course all the incorrect choices were sung by The Supremes, with the original lineup of Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard.

Answer: Barry White

Big soul man Barry White dedicated this song, as he did all his hits, to his wife, Glodean James, who sang with Love Unlimited. Given the quite erotic nature of his groans and sighs, he would perhaps have been in big trouble had he neglected to do so! Sadly, we lost Barry White at the age of 58 in 2003.

This romantic song was covered by many other artists, including Tom Jones, who had a joint US-UK hit with it. In a departure from his hard-rocking hits, Little Richard sang a beautiful version of "Without Love" on his album "The Georgia Peach."

Answer: Queen

It is generally accepted that Queen's lead singer, Freddie Mercury, sounds like Elvis on this number. Whether that would be a parody of Elvis' style or a tribute to it, has never been explicitly stated, but given Freddie's usually generous attitude to other and/or earlier influences, the tribute option seems more likely.

It is interesting to note that Pat Benatar originally began her musical career in training to be a coloratura soprano, with plans to attend Julliard. She of course changed over to the pop/rock charts and received several Grammy awards for categories such as 'Best Female Rock Performance." In addition to "Love is a Battlefield", Benatar had huge hits with "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and "Heartbreaker."

Answer: Golden Earring

Rather a strange provenance; "Radar Love" was a hit for the Dutch group Golden Earring, in 1974. It was recorded in The Netherlands. Unsubstantiated rumour has it that the band had to lip-sync the lyrics, as they were not fluent in English. Whatever the case, Golden Earring had a large number of diehard fans in the English-speaking world, thanks to this and other songs.
