Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the leader of the group Jethro Tull and what instrument does he usually play?

Answer: Ian Anderson-flute

There are some who think Jethro Tull is in the band! No, Jethro was a son of a nobleman, born in 1674, and turned to farming in 1699 after his days at St. John's College. Not liking how farmers of his day would hand scatter seed during planting season, he invented a horse drawn seed drill to put the seeds in straight rows under some soil so they had a better chance to grow well and to provide protection from birds.
2. What of these albums was Jethro Tull's first release in the USA?

Answer: This Was

"This Was" was recorded from June 13 to August 23, 1968 in Chelsea, London and released later in the U.S. by Chrysalis. "Stand Up" was released in 1969, "Benefit" was released in 1970 by EMI and in 1971 by Chrysalis, and in April of 1971 "Aqualung" was their fourth release.
3. Which was the first Jethro Tull album to NOT depict four band members on the front cover in either photograph or drawing (cartoon) form?

Answer: Aqualung

The term Aqualung was used by permission of U.S. Divers, Anta Ana, California. On the front cover of "This Was" the photograph of the band shows them as old men in the woods with about a dozen dogs. "Stand Up" has a drawing of the band on its cover and if you open the sleeve the band stands up with cartoon bodies and photographed noggins. "Benefit" shows the band on stage in cutout form while the band is also shown looking through a window at the back of the stage. "Aqualung" shows a vagrant standing next to a poster.
4. On the front cover of 'Aqualung', what does the poster say?

Answer: Spend Christma Skiing With Mixed Part Remote Scottis Highlands 22

The inner cover shows the band carousing in a painting, or at least the characters resemble the band. Man creating God is part of the back cover words written as if they're in the Bible.
5. Which lyric in 'Aqualung' is correct?

Answer: And you snatch your rattling last breaths with deep-sea-diver sounds,

Aqualung was watching the "frilly panties", had "broken luck", and went "down to the bog to warm his feet."
6. From which album is the song "Teacher"?

Answer: Benefit

Released in 1970 in the U.S., this album has a liner note which says, "piano and organ played by John Evan ... for our benefit"
7. "Court-jesting, never-resting--he must be very cunning To assume and air of dignity and bless Us all with his oratory prowess; His lame-brained antics and his jumping in the air. And every night his act's the same And so it must all a game of chess he's playing" - from which Jethro Tull song are these lyrics?

Answer: Only Solitaire

One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums! I once was dozing when this song was playing and I wish I remembered the lyrics I dreamed while it played, they were hilarious! The rest of the song titles are also from the album "War Child". The capitalization and words are from the album sleeve.
8. Which Jethro tull album of the early 1970s came with a newspaper as part of its packaging in the USA?

Answer: Thick as a Brick

One of the more interesting Tull albums, it supposedly was written by a child and put to music by the group. There was a connect the dots part of the newspaper with a duck looking at a naked woman if you chose to connect the dots. I'm sure that an untouched album is worth a lot of money.
9. "Meanwhile back in the year One" - these are the opening lyrics to which song?

Answer: Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day

The first song on the second side (when there were sides) of the album "War Child". It is the title of this quiz.
10. The song "Ring Out, Solstice Bells" is from which album?

Answer: Songs From the Wood

"Songs From the Wood" is really an under-appreciated album. It may take you a few times through it to start to like the songs, but they are classic Tull.
