Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To begin with here are the lyrics 'I'm not just pretending now to take you back, any old how, and I will prove to you how strong my love can be' but can you complete the name of the group that sang them: ____________ Assorted Colours?

Answer: Pinkerton's

'Mirror Mirror' reached #9 on the UK chart in 1966, and was the only top ten entry achieved by Pinkerton's Assorted Colours.
2. I give you the lyrics 'A look from you eyes the touch of your hand and I seem to fly to some other land', but what did the song title suggest might be half as nice?

Answer: Paradise

'(If Paradise Is) Half As Nice' was a UK chart-topper for Amen Corner, the group lead by Andy Fairweather-Low, in 1969. They also had a hit with 'Bend Me, Shape Me', which was taken into the Billboard top ten by American Breed.
3. This 1966 hit featured the lyrics 'You didn't run, you didn't lie, you knew I wanted just to hold you'. The group was lead by Cliff Bennett and completed by the who?

Answer: Rebel Rousers

'Got To Get You Into My Life' took Cliff and the guys to #6 and was their second and final UK top ten entry, the first being with 'One Way Love' which reached #9 in 1964. The Radio Revellers sang with Anthony Steel on songs such as 'West of Zanzibar'.
4. Which song included the lyrics: 'Her eyes they shone like diamonds, I thought her the queen of the land'?

Answer: Black Velvet Band

The Dubliners got to #15 on the UK charts in 1967 with 'Black Velvet Band', which was their follow up hit to 'Seven Drunken Nights' which got to #7.
5. Who was being discussed in the lyrics 'His arms, his legs don't feel too strong, his heart is weak - there's something wrong'?

Answer: Grocer Jack

Keith West got to #2 in 1967 with what I used to call the 'Grocer Jack' song. I now know it as 'Excerpt from a Teenage Opera', to give it its full title. 'Right Said Fred' was a hit for Bernard Cribbins in the early 60's, as well as being the name of a 1990s chart act.
6. Ballad time - so which song included the following; 'Then I saw you out the corner of my eye, a little girl alone and so shy'?

Answer: The Last Waltz

The lyrics came from 'The Last Waltz', a 1967 UK #1 for Engelbert Humperdinck which also made it to #25 on Billboard.
7. A personal favourite: 'Someone's dropped a bomb somewhere contaminating atmosphere and blackening the sky'. The song?

Answer: It's Good News Week

And 'It's Good News Week' was a #5 hit in 1965 for Hedgehoppers Anonymous, their only hit to boot.
8. Which song opens with 'Some girls love to run around, like to handle everything they see'?

Answer: She'd Rather Be With Me

All were hits for The Turtles (although 'You Showed Me' didn't chart in Britain). The correct answer was 'She'd Rather Be With Me', a US #3 in 1967, it made #4 in the UK and was their biggest UK hit.
9. The lyrics 'Your world is plain to see, it ain't right for you and me' were sung by?

Answer: Graham Bonney

Ooh, a tough one were that! The song was 'Supergirl', which made #19 in the UK for Graham Bonney in 1966.
10. Should be more recognisable: 'Don't be concerned it will not harm you, it's only me pursuing something I'm not sure of'. Now who had a British hit with this?

Answer: Both Bob Lind & Val Doonican

Yes they both scored with 'Elusive Butterfly' in 1966. Incidentally, both versions got to #5 in the UK, whilst Lind's original also went to #5 on Billboard.

A lot of UK references there, I thought that quiz was quite difficult. Nonetheless I hope you enjoyed it, and if I've reminded you of some song you may have forgotten existed then I'm happy. I promise to try and be nicer next time...
