Every year my local oldies radio station (CKOC in Hamilton, Ontario) compiles a countdown of the top 500 oldies, based on listeners' votes. Here is a sampling of some of the songs from the '60s that made the 2004 list (not counted down in order).

"Brown Eyed Girl" was the first top 40 hit for Irish musician Van Morrison, off of his first solo album, "Blowin' Your Mind". A poet at heart, Morrison was never comfortable with commercial success.
"Kind of a Drag", by the Buckinghams reached #67 on the countdown, "Beyond the Sea", by Bobby Darin, was #148, and "Hello Mary Lou", by Ricky Nelson was #219.

Answer: It's My Party

Lesley Gore was only 17 years old when she scored a number one hit with "It's My Party". The echo hit "It's Judy's Turn to Cry", written for Lesley Gore as an answer to "It's My Party", reached number five on the charts.
"Runaway", by Del Shanon, was #13 on the countdown, "96 Tears", by ? and the Mysterians, was #149, and "I'm Sorry", by Brenda Lee, was #251.

Answer: Paint it Black

"Paint it Black" reached number one on the US charts only a couple of weeks after being released in 1966. This was the year that the Rolling Stones made their second appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show", and also the year that they sued 14 different hotels that refused to offer them rooms.
Also by the Rolling Stones, "Honky Tonk Women" reached #323 on the countown, "It's All Over Now" was #429 and "Satisfaction" was #9.

Answer: Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da

"Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da" was an expression that McCartney often heard drummer Jimmy Scott humming to himself. When questioned about it, Scott said that it was an African expression that meant "life goes on". However when McCartney wrote a song about it, Scott changed his story and claimed to have made the expression up and asked to receive writing credit and remuneration for McCartney's having used it.
Also by the Beatles, "Can't Buy Me Love" reached #23 on the countdown, "Get Back" was #47, and "She Loves You" was #103.

The Four Tops started singing together at a friend's birthday party in 1954, and continued to sing together for over 40 years. "It's the Same Old Song" reached number five on the charts in 1965, a year when they had four Top Forty hits, 2 of them reaching the coveted number one spot.
Also by The Four Tops, "(Reach Out) I'll Be There" was #121 on the countdown, "Bernadette" was #264 and "Baby I Need Your Lovin'" was #277.

Answer: In the Ghetto

After eight years of making bad movies and not touring, Elvis made a television special which he followed up with a month long engagement at the International Hotel in Vegas. This started a comeback tour for him, resulting in the release of several hit singles. "In the Ghetto", reaching number five on the charts, was one of four songs recorded by Elvis in 1965.
Also by Elvis, "Crying in the Chapel" was #463 on the countdown, "Stuck on You" was #109, and "(You're the) Devil in Disguise" was #227.

Sonny Bono was a writer/promoter for Phil Spector when he met Cher and got her a job singing backup for the Ronettes. They started singing together as Caesar and Cleo in '63, got married in '64, and started using their real names in '65. "I Got You Babe" was their first number one hit, released in 1965.
"My Guy", by Mary Wells, was #298 on the countdown, "Come See About Me", by the Supremes, was #110, and "Chapel of Love", by theDixie Cups, was #156.

Written by Gerome Ragini and James Rado for the hit rock opera of the same name, "Hair" was a number two hit for the Cowsills.
The Cowsills were a singing family group on whose real life career the hit television show "The Partridge Family" was based.

Written by Brian Wilson, "California Girls" hit number three on the charts for the Beach Boys in 1965. After succumbing to a nervous breakdown, Brian was no longer touring with the group, although he did continue to write and record. He was replaced in concert by first Glen Campbell, and then by Bruce Johnson.
Also by the Beach Boys, "Help Me Rhonda" was #24 on the countdown, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" was #35, and "Surfer Girl" was #403.

Gerry and the Pacemakers were the second group signed by Beatles manager, Brian Epstein. "Don't Let the Sun Catch you Crying" was their second single, and their second number one hit.
"How Do You Do It", #447 on the countdown, was also a big hit for Gerry and the Pacemakers, after it was turned down by the Beatles.
"Have I the Right", by the Honeycombs, was #390 on the countdown, and "It's a Beautiful Morning", by the Rascals, was #93.
