Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 10cc had a hit in 1973, with a song about a prison riot- what was it called?

Answer: Rubber Bullets

'Rubber Bullets' was the first of many hits for 10cc, including 'The Wall Street Shuffle', 'Life is a Minestrone', 'I'm Not in Love' and 'Dreadlock Holiday'.

'Jailbreak' was a 1976 hit for Aussie band, AC/DC. The Irish outfit, Thin Lizzy, released a different song with the same title in the same year. 'Jailhouse Rock' was by none other than The King, Elvis Presley and 'Folsom Prison Blues' was Johnny Cash.
2. In 1977, Rod Stewart had chart success with 'The First Cut Is the Deepest'. Who wrote it?

Answer: Cat Stevens

Cat Stevens (later Yusuf Islam) wrote and released the song in 1967. It has been covered by several artists, but Stewart's gravelly voice propelled it to Top Tens in many parts of the world. Canadian country music star, Sheryl Crow, demonstrated the long-term popularity of the song, by having a hit with it in 2003, 36 years after its original airing.
3. In 1974, Ross Ryan had a hit where he thought he was a creature from Greek mythology. Which famous animal was it?

Answer: Pegasus

American-born, but Western-Australian-raised, Ryan had a big hit with the rather strange, but catchy 'I Am Pegasus'. The opening lyrics are "I am Pegasus, my name means horse...", which he discovered in a book on baby names meanings. 'Sagittarius' and 'Demetrius' are also mentioned, but only because both words rhyme with 'Pegasus'.
4. 'Summer (The First Time)', was a very suggestive song about a teenage boy and an older woman. Who had a top 40 hit with it, in 1973?

Answer: Bobby Goldsboro

'Summer' was Goldsboro's biggest hit since the soppy tearjerker, 'Honey', in 1968. He also had success with 'See the Funny Little Clown' (1963) and 'Watching Scotty Grow' (1970).

Roberta Flack's song was rather unsubtle- her 1974 hit was 'Feel Like Makin' Love'. 'Love To Love You Baby' was Donna Summer, and very raunchy! The Starland Vocal Band gave us 'Afternoon Delight'.
5. Terry Jacks released a sad song in 1974, loosely based on a French tune called 'Le Moribund'. What was the name of the song, where he is saying goodbye to Michelle?

Answer: Seasons In The Sun

The lyrics are somewhat ambiguous. Is he going to commit suicide, or does he have a terminal illness? Some critics suggest that he had been drafted and was off to Vietnam. Whatever the meaning, it is still a rather polarising song, having been regularly voted as one of the worst pop songs of all time.

Terry Jacks was also a producer, working with the Beach Boys. They had the first option for the song, but turned it down, so he sang it himself.

'We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow' is a 2012 release by French singer, Soko, 'Time in a Bottle' was a hit for Jim Croce in 1972, just before his death the following year, in a plane crash. 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' was by the British comedy troupe, Monty Python, and was taken from their 1979 movie, 'The Life of Brian'.
6. Tina Turner released 'Nutbush City Limits' in 1973, a song about her early life. Does Nutbush actually exist?

Answer: Yes

Nutbush is a small township in western Tennessee where Anna Mae Bullock (later Tina Turner) lived until she was sixteen. True to the lyrics, it is located on Highway (State Road) No 19, which is now known as Tina Turner Highway.
7. In 1970s Australia, two local bands competed for the lucrative pop market- they were Sherbet and Skyhooks. Fans of one band did not generally like the other band, but both groups thrived. Skyhooks tended to be the brashest of the two. Which of these is NOT a 'Hooks album?

Answer: Slipstream

Graeme 'Shirley' Strachan was lead singer and 'Red' Symonds on lead guitar of the very theatrical glam rock band. Shirley died in 2001, when the helicopter he was piloting crashed into a mountain.

Their music was loud, brash and flamboyant, compared to Sherbet who were more clean-cut, but still extremely talented. Both their 'Slipstream' album, and the single of the same name, were Top Ten.
8. In 1972, this lady was 'The Happiest Girl In The Whole USA'. It was a crossover country hit that climbed to Number 11 on the Billboard charts. Who was this talented singer?

Answer: Donna Fargo

Her fist album, also called 'The Happiest Girl In The Whole USA' produced her second hit, 'Funny Face'. Both songs were very bubbly and fun.

Crystal Gayle, who was a sister to Loretta Lynne, is probably best known for 'Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue', which topped the charts in 1976. Dolly Parton has had huge success in music and acting.

Jessi Colter, who was married to Duane Eddy and Waylon Jennings, released a very pretty song in 1975- 'I'm Not Lisa'.
9. Neil Diamond released an album in 1970, that had a distinctively African influence. His first Number One hit, 'Crackling Rosie' also came from this experimental album. What is it called?

Answer: Tap Root Manuscript

'Tap Root Manuscript' was his sixth album. Over his career, he released more than 50 albums and dozens of singles. 'The Feel of Neil Diamond' was his debut, in 1966. One of the highest selling albums of all time, 'Hot August Night' was recorded live in Los Angeles, in August, 1972. 'Home Before Dark' came much later, in 2008.

He also had a big hit with a cover of 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother'. The African-inspired 'Soolaimón' (meaning Hello, or Welcome) also performed well, but my favourite track was a very un-Diamond-like 'I am the Lion'.
10. Teen idol, David Cassidy, had his first hit in 1971 with 'Cherish' and his final recording was a jingle called 'UFO (You Fine One)' for an app called 'iSlinky Squashin Martians', in 2011. However, he also starred in a television series for the first half of the 1970s. What was the theme song of the show?

Answer: C'mon Get Happy

The television show was 'The Partridge Family', centred on a very talented musical family. Shirley Jones played the mother of David Cassidy (Keith), Susan Dey (Laurie), Danny Bonaduce (Danny), Jeremy Gelbwaks (Chris in Season 1)/ Brian Forster (Chris in Seasons 2-4) and Suzanne Crough as Tracy. They travelled from concert to concert in a multi-coloured bus, and released a string of albums. 'I Think I Love You' was a huge hit from the show, released in 1970, from the debut episode.

'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do' (1972) is a standard, written and first performed by Neil Sedaka, and covered by Cassidy. 'Rock Me, Baby' (1972) and 'A Fool in Love' (1976), were both solo hits.

David Cassidy still looked young when he died in 2017, aged 67.
