Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the lead singer for The Animals?

Answer: Eric Burdon

The Animals had seven top ten U.K hits, but split up in 1966. Lead singer Eric Burdon left the group to go solo, but keyboard player Alan Price went on to have more success as a solo artist. Chas Chandler went on to manage glam rock outfit 'Slade' in the early 1970's.
2. Who was the lead singer for Herman's Hermits?

Answer: Peter Noone

Teeny-pop outfit Herman's Hermits chalked up 10 U.K top ten hits from 1964 to 1970. The band, along with The Monkees, appealed to the younger end of the market.
3. Who was the lead singer for Traffic?

Answer: Steve Winwood

Traffic were a short lived band (three U.K top ten hits, all in 1967)
who provided the soundtrack to the cult 1968 film 'Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush'.
4. Andy Fairweather-Low was the lead singer for Amen Corner.

Answer: True

Amen Corner had some success in the late 1960's. Fairweather-Low went to have a couple of hits in the U.K as a solo Artist during the mid-1970's.
5. Who was the lead singer for Roxy Music?

Answer: Bryan Ferry

A successful early 1970's 'glitter' band. Durham miner's son Bryan Ferry was the epitome of 'smooth'. Keyboard player Brian Eno has played on many other albums by other artists.
6. Gerry Rafferty was the lead singer for Stealer's Wheel.

Answer: True

Who can listen to 'Stuck In The Middle With You' now without thinking back to THAT scene in the film 'Reservoir Dogs'? Gerry Rafferty had more success as a soloist with the worldwide smash 'Baker Street' in 1978. Scottish comedian/actor Billy Connolly also performed with Rafferty in their earlier days.
7. Who was the lead singer for Wings?

Answer: Paul McCartney

Wings basically made catchy pop tunes for the 1970's. McCartney was never going to reach the heady heights that The Beatles had reached in the 1960's and he knew it. Still, 'Live And Let Die' isn't a bad tune.
8. Ronnie Wood was the lead singer for Wizzard.

Answer: False

Roy Wood left The Move in 1972 to form glam rock band Wizzard.
Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood previously played with The Small Faces and then The Faces, until he joined up with Mick Jagger and company in 1974. Wizzard had six top ten U.K hits from 1972 to 1974.
9. Who was the lead singer for Squeeze?

Answer: Glenn Tilbrook

South london band Squeeze were a part of the new wave scene of the late 1970's (but not punk). Tilbrook/Difford wrote some great catchy pop tunes. Most famous ex-band member, Jools Holland, has presented various television programmes on British TV.
10. Alex James was the lead singer for Generation X.

Answer: False

Lead singer Billy Idol had a couple of hits with punk band Generation X. Idol went on to a solo career and cracked the U.S market during the 1980's, but a tad too commercial for my taste.
11. Who was the lead singer for The Cockney Rejects?

Answer: Stinky Turner

By 1980 punk was dead, but a new form of punk took off at around this time. This sound was a more heavy punk sound that called itself 'Oi'. The Cockney Rejects led the way for a short while.
12. Who was the lead singer for Public Image Limited?

Answer: John Lydon

Ex-Pistol Johnny Rotten co-formed P.I.L and reverted back to his birthname of John Lydon. P.I.L had some success (though sporadically) during the 1980's.
13. Who was the lead singer for Dire Straits?

Answer: Mark Knopfler

Dire Straits had their first hit in the U.K in 1979. However, they really hit the top during the mid-1980's. In the last few years Knopfler has gone on to write music for various film projects.
14. Who was the lead singer for Teardrop Explodes?

Answer: Julian Cope

Despite only scoring one U.K top ten hit, Teardrop Explodes, in my opinion, always seemed to have a large following in the 1980's. Maybe all the students that used to worship them (ditto Echo And The Bunnymen) were never keen on buying their records, but just enjoyed turning up to their campus concerts instead.
15. Roland Orzabal was the lead singer for Tears For Fears.

Answer: False

Curt Smith was the lead singer although Orzabal did sing on a few of their tracks. Tears For Fears had much success in the U.K during the 1980's, but towards the end of that decade I actually found them quite irritating.
16. Who was the lead singer for Killing Joke?

Answer: Jaz Coleman

Post-Punk rock band Killing Joke had a cult (therefore, small following) during the 1980's.
17. Who was the lead singer for The Farm?

Answer: Pete Hooton

The Farm, from Liverpool, were a part of the indie scene of the late 1980's/early 90's.
18. Who was the lead singer for Kula Shaker?

Answer: Crispian Mills

Kula Shaker seemed destined to reign during the 1990's, with the release of two great albums (especially the first), but split up shortly after the release of the second album. Crispian Mills is the son of actress Hayley Mills.
19. Richard Ashcroft was the lead singer for The Verve.

Answer: True

The Verve finally hit the big time in the U.K off the back of 'Brit-Pop' in 1997. Lead Singer Ashcroft has since gone solo.
20. Who was the lead singer for Black Grape?

Answer: Shaun Ryder

Ex-Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder formed Black Grape. After two albums, he sacked the band and re-formed The Happy Mondays, but success was not forthcoming the second time around.
