Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which established dance artist climbed the charts to the number one spot on the Billboard Dance Chart in 2004 for the eighth consecutive time, beating the record once held by Madonna?

Answer: Kristine W

Although all of these artists have had numerous number one hits according to Billboard, only Kristine W hit the number one spot eight consecutive times. She started her string of hits with her debut single "Feel What You Want" in 1994, and continued with "Land of the Living" and "One More Try" off of her debut album "Land of the Living" in 1996.

It took almost 4 years for another album, but in the fall of 2000, her sophomore album, "Stronger" hit the dance charts with her singles "Stronger" and "Lovin' You".

In early 2003, she was asked to record a song for the "Queer as Folk" soundtrack. She teamed up with the duo Murk to record the MONSTER hit "Some Lovin'" which held the number one spot for an astounding seven weeks. The fall of that same year, her third album of new material was released, and the first single, and title of her album, "Fly Again", hit the number one spot.

In 2004, she continued her streak of number ones with the second single from "Fly Again", "Save My Soul".
2. Which singer from a famous family sang under the pseudonym "Toy"?

Answer: LaToya Jackson

Amazingly, LaToya Jackson sang under the pseudonym "Toy" with the song "Just Wanna Dance" when it was first released in mid-2004. This song was later released on her album "Startin' Over". After being remixed by the likes of Chris Cox (formerly of Thunderpuss), the song became a minor club hit in the summer of 2004.
3. Which Madonna single did NOT go to number one on the Billboard Dance Charts from her album "American Life"?

Answer: Me Against the Music

"Me Against the Music" DID go to the number one spot, but it was not released on Madonna's "American Life" album. This song only appeared on Britney Spears' album "Britney". "American Life" spawned 5 massive club hits-- "Die Another Day", the theme song to "James Bond: Die Another Day", the title track "American Life", "Hollywood", "Nothing Fails", and "Love Profusion".
4. Which folk artist had an unexpected number one club hit when one of her songs was remixed after she released an album on an independent label?

Answer: Sophie B. Hawkins

Sophie B. Hawkins severed ties with Sony, her former label, before releasing "Wilderness" on Trumpet Swan Records. The first single, "Beautiful Girl", was remixed by Junior Vasquez and immediately flew up the charts to garner her first Billboard number one dance hit.
5. Which dance artist released her third album of new material in 2004 after beating breast cancer?

Answer: Anastacia

Even while trying to beat breast cancer, Anastacia still went into the studio day after day to record her self-titled third album. Her fans thanked her for the new music by making "Anastacia" the number one album in most European countries. The first single, "Left Outside Alone" went directly to the number one position on the Billboard Dance Charts in the United States.
6. Which adult film star made a huge splash on the dance charts with a remake of a classic love song?

Answer: Colton Ford

Gay adult film star Colton Ford released "Signed Sealed Delivered", a duet with dance queen Pepper Mashay, in early 2004. Pepper Mashay has had her own string of number one hits, including "Dive into the Pool", "I Got My Pride", and "I Can't Stop". "Signed Sealed Delivered" was originally recorded by Stevie Wonder all the way back in 1970.
7. Which television talk show inspired a London-based musical which spawned a huge club staple in the US?

Answer: The Jerry Springer Show

"The Jerry Springer Show", which has consistently been voted "The Worst Show in Television History!" by most critics time and time again in the United States, spawned a musical appropriately entitled "The Jerry Springer Opera". This musical not only won many awards in England, but it was reworked to move across the pond to Broadway in New York City.

This musical included the song "I Just Wanna Dance", which was remixed in 2004 and became a huge dance floor draw.
8. In one of the strangest twists dance music had ever seen, a song was recorded by one artist then again by another artist less than a year after the original was released. Stranger still-- both songs went to the top of the dance charts. What song was it?

Answer: How Did You Know?

The song "How Did You Know?" was first released by Kurtis Mantroix presents Chamonix in the summer of 2003. The song immediately flew up the charts, thanks in part to some great mixes by well-established remixers. In the spring of 2004, Mynt featuring Kim Sozzi introduced the same song. Based on sales, Chamonix's version was the more popular version, but this song now holds the record as the first song to be redone less than a year after its original release and to climb the charts both times.
9. Which dance hit was not remade in 2004?

Answer: Freak Like Me

Although all of these songs became club hits, the Sugababes released "Freak Like Me" in 2003. "Take My Breath Away", released by Berlin in 1986 was remade by Jessica Simpson in 2004. "Love Me Right (Oh Sheila)", first sung by Ready for the World, was remodeled by Angel City. "The Land of Confusion", first released by Genesis in 1986 was reworked with a sample of Diana Ross' "Upside Down" and released with the title "The World We Live In" by Alcazar in the summer of 2004.
10. Which "American Idol" contestant had a number one dance hit in the spring of 2004?

Answer: Kimberley Locke

Kimberley Locke released her debut album, "One Love" in March of 2004. The first week of April found Kimberley's first single "8th World Wonder" sitting atop the Billboard Dance Chart. The only other contestant to do that before her was the inaugural winner, Kelly Clarkson, when her single "Miss Independent" made it there a year earlier in the spring of 2003.
