Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The group named Bread scored a number one hit with their maiden Top 40 entry in 1970. Can you name it?

Answer: Make It With You

David Gates led Bread, a California based group, onto the charts in 1969 and although the group formed back in 1967, it took until 1970 for them to score their first charting hit. "Make It With You" was the song and it went all the way to the top, spending a week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the summer that year.

The song also went to number five in the U.K. and was one of the first big hits of the so-called 'soft rock' era. After the group disbanded in the late 1970s, Gates went on to have a fairly successful solo career.
2. A longtime singer of pop standards named Steve Lawrence first recorded this song. It was number one for him and also a number one hit in 1971 by Donny Osmond. Name it.

Answer: Go Away Little Girl

"Go Away Little Girl" is a very popular song from the rock era. It was written by the immortal songwriting team of Carole King and Gerry Goffin, and first made the charts when it went to number one in 1962 for Steve Lawrence. The Happenings recorded the song in the late 1960s and got into the U.S. Billboard Top 10, and then in 1971, a 13 year old Donny Osmond had his only number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts with the song.

It managed to remain at the top for three weeks in September that year.
3. A barmaid named "Brandy" was the subject of this top of the charts song in 1972. Can you name the artist?

Answer: Looking Glass

Looking Glass was formed in New Jersey in 1969 as four college students from Rutgers University. They had their only number one success with the song officially titled "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)" in 1972. The song portrayed a barmaid who loves a sailor and no one else, although many men try.

It is allegedly based on a true story. The song itself spent one week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the summer of 1972, temporarily unseating "Alone Again (Naturally)", the Gilbert O'Sullivan tune, which went back to number one the next week.
4. After a three year hiatus from the U.S. charts, Diana Ross returned to the top in 1973 with this touching hit. Can you name it?

Answer: Touch Me In The Morning

It was "Touch Me in the Morning" which propelled Miss Ross back to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts when the song reached number one in August of 1973. She had previously hit the top as a solo artist with the powerful cover of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" in 1970, but had been absent from the U.S. charts in the interim except for a couple of songs which didn't chart particularly well.

The aforementioned "I'm Still Waiting" was a number one hit in the U.K. but could barely find the charts in the U.S., peaking at number 63.

In addition, a tune called "Surrender" which peaked at number ten in the U.K. barely squeezed into the Top 40 in the U.S., peaking at number 38.
5. A song about a musical group escaping from prison? What artist would come up with such an idea? Well there was such a song in 1974 and it was by...well you know who. Solve the wordplay and you can name the song.

Answer: Band on the Run

"Band on the Run" was a song written by Paul and Linda McCartney and credited the Paul McCartney and Wings. It was precisely about a band that escapes from prison and is on the run from the law. The tune was the title track from an album with the same name and it spent a week at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in June of 1973 and reached number three in the U.K.
6. Tennis star Billie Jean King figured prominently in this Elton John number one from 1975. Name it.

Answer: Philadelphia Freedom

All these tunes were smash hits for Elton John, but we're looking for "Philadelphia Freedom" here. The song spent two weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1975. Written by Bernie Taupin, the song was a gift to Elton's friend, tennis star Billie Jean King who was part of a team based in Philadelphia called the "Philadelphia Freedoms" in the newly established World Team Tennis league. (Professional tennis in a team sport format).

The song is officially credited to the "Elton John Band".
7. John Lennon allegedly made a comment about Paul McCartney's songs that he recorded after leaving the Beatles, saying that they were kind of lightweight. What was McCartney's 1976 response?

Answer: He wrote a song called "Silly Love Songs"

"Silly Love Songs" was a number one hit for Wings in 1976, spending a total of five non-consecutive weeks at the top on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring that year as well as number two in the U.K. It was in fact a sort of response to McCartney's critics (John Lennon allegedly included) who said that McCartney's tunes as a solo artist and with the group Wings were kind of soft. "Silly Love Songs" was a departure of sorts, since it had more of a disco-sounding beat to it with a bass guitar lead, and a very distinct thumping drum beat.

Not so bad for a soft song. Billboard Magazine ranked this song as the number 31 on their list of "The Greatest Songs of All Time".
8. 1977. Pretty well known lyrics. "You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave". From where?

Answer: Hotel California

"Hotel California" is perhaps the most recognizable song ever recorded by The Eagles. Off an album of the same name, this song surprisingly spent only one week at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1977, but has since become a classic, not only for the lyrics but for an extended guitar interplay at the end of the song between Joe Walsh and Don Felder.

It has received many accolades including winning the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1977. It is ranked by Rolling Stone Magazine as the number 49 song on their list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
9. A band named "Exile" had their only number one hit with this 1978 smoochy song. Name it.

Answer: Kiss You All Over

The band Exile are considered a one-hit wonder in the U.S. for their 1978 top of the charts tune called "Kiss you All Over". The song spent four weeks at the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the fall of that year. A follow up called "You Thrill Me" got as high as number 40 on the charts, but that was it for the group.

But wait, hold on a minute. In the early 1980s they changed their focus to a more country oriented style of music and became country music superstars. The had no less than ten number one singles on both the U.S. and Canadian country music charts between 1983 and 1987. Guess they found their niche.
10. They hit the top with the first single called "My Sharona" in 1979. Who were they?

Answer: The Knack

"My Sharona" was the smash single that put The Knack on the music radar in 1979, spending six consecutive weeks at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts that year. The song also ended up as the Billboard number one song for the entire year of 1979.

The song was about a real person, one Sharon Alperin, who songwriter and lead singer Doug Fieger had met and fell in love with. Her photograph can be seen on the cover of the 45rpm single release of the tune.
