Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Released in 1970, this song is generally regarded at the biggest hit for The Guess Who. Can you name it?

Answer: American Woman

"American Woman" was a 1970 release by The Guess Who which found its way to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts and remained there for three weeks in the spring that year. It was their first number one hit in the U.S. although they had been having a world of success in their native Canada, where this song became their third number one.

The song was released with a b-side called "No Sugar Tonight" which also went to number one in Canada, and charted at number 39 in the U.S.
2. The Honey Cone had their moment in the sun with this popular tune of 1971. What was its title?

Answer: Want Ads

The Honey Cone recorded "Want Ads" in 1971 for the legendary Holland-Dozier-Holland group, who had left Motown and formed Hot Wax Records. The song had one week at the top of the Billboard U.S. charts in the spring of that year.
3. "Oh Girl" was the pinnacle of success for this 1970s soul group. Can you name them?

Answer: The Chi-Lites

"Oh Girl" capped off back to back hits for The Chi-Lites who were at the apex of their pop careers in 1972. They had previously hit with "Have You Seen Her" which was a number three Billboard charting hit in late 1971. "Oh Girl" was their follow-up tune and it made it to the top of the charts for one week in May of 1972.

Although the group continued to have success on the R & B charts, they never had another song in the Top 20 of the pop charts again.
4. The Edgar Winter Group had this monster hit get to the top of the charts in 1973.

Answer: Frankenstein

"Frankenstein" was an instrumental hit for The Edgar Winter Group which spent a week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in May of 1973. It came off an album called "They Only Come Out at Night".
5. What was on John Denver's shoulders in his 1974 number one hit?

Answer: Sunshine

"Sunshine on My Shoulders" spent one week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1974. Denver claimed he had written the song on a dreary day in late winter while he was in Minnesota, and just got to thinking about how nice a sunny day makes you feel.
6. "Every night I'm lying in bed, holding you close in my dreams..." starts this 1975 smash hit from the Eagles. Can you name the tune?

Answer: Best of My Love

Written by the combination of Glenn Frey, Don Henley and J.D. Souther, the song has Don Henley on lead vocals. It spent a week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in March of 1975, and came off the album called "On The Border". It was the first song by the Eagles to attain the number one spot on the charts, a position they would become very familiar with later in the decade.
7. The Miracles had one number one hit after Smokey Robinson left the group. That occurred in 1976. Can you remember the name of the song?

Answer: Love Machine ( Part 1)

All these song were recorded by The Miracles but the only one to hit the top of the charts was "Love Machine" which spent a week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in March of 1976. The song featured Billy Griffin as the lead, replacing the legendary Smokey Robinson, who had gone on to a solo career.

Interestingly this song turned out to be the biggest selling song in the group's history.
8. The soundtrack from the motion picture called "A Star is Born" (1977) produced this 1977 number one tune. Name it.

Answer: Evergreen

Barbara Streisand recorded this thune for which Paul Williams wrote the lyrics and she took it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts for three weeks in March of 1977. It won two Academy Awards, one for Song of the Year, and one for Best Original Song. It was Streisand's second number one from a movie soundtrack, her other being "The Way We Were" from the 1974 movie of the same name.
9. One of the biggest international hits ever came from the soundtrack to the motion picture "Grease" (1978).

Answer: True

"You're The One That I Want" was performed by John Travolta and Olivia Newtown-John. It was released in advance of the motion picture and spent only one week at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts. However, it transcended American borders and became a number one hit in no less than 12 countries around the globe.

It stayed at number one in the U.K. for nine weeks, and sold almost 2 million copies. It also was a number one hit in (should I list them?) Australia, Austria, Canada, Dutch Top 40, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, and Sweden.
10. A 1975 song called "Once I Had Love" was re-recorded by the band called Blondie in 1979 and given a new name. What name?

Answer: Heart of Glass

Blondie had originally recorded the song in 1975 as a blue number. They re-recorded it a couple of times and performed it on tours, but in 1979 with disco being so big at the time, their producer decided to re-cut the tune with a disco beat for an album called "Parallel Lines" Good choice.

The song spent a week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring that year, and is also ranked at number 255 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
