Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Two different versions of "Coming Up" by Paul McCartney became hits in different parts of the world in 1980.

Answer: True

"Coming Up (Live at Glasgow)" was a number one U.S. Billboard charting hit for Paul McCartney in 1980. It spent three weeks at the top of the charts in the summer that year. It was a live version of a song he recorded for his album "McCartney II". The song was released with the album cut as the A-side and the live version as the B-side.

In the U.K., the A-side was a number two hit on their charts, but in the U.S. the dee-jays concentrated on the b-side(live version) and that was the version that charted.
2. Sheena Easton had a number one song in 1981 that had different titles in different countries.

Answer: True

"Morning Train" was the title of the number one song for Sheena Easton when it hit the top of the U.S. Billboard charts for a two week stay in 1981. The song was previously released and went to the top of the U.K. charts in 1980 under the title "9 to 5".

However, Dolly Parton had a U.S. hit with the theme song from the 1980 motion picture "9 to 5", so Easton's record company actually changed the title for the song's U.S. release in order to avoid confusion.
3. What was the magical tune that the Steve Miller Band took to the top of the charts in 1982?

Answer: Abracadabra

It was "Abracadabra" that propelled the Steve Miller Band to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts for non-consecutive two week stay in the fall of 1982. The song hit number two on the U.K. charts as well.
4. The biggest hit for The Police was this 1983 classic. Name it.

Answer: Every Breath You Take

"Every Breath You Take" is considered The Police's signature song. It spent eight weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the summer of 1983, as well as four weeks at the top of the U.K. charts. The song won two Grammy Awards and is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 84.
5. Cyndi Lauper had a 1984 number one tune which was her second at the time. Can you guess the name from the clue given?

Answer: Time After Time

Of the four listed songs, the only one to hit the top of the charts was "Time After Time" which spent two weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard charts in the spring of 1984. It also reached number three in the U.K. and has become one of Lauper's most recognizable and popular tunes.

It was nominated for a 1985 Grammy Award. The song came off an album called "She's So Unusual" which was her debut album and yielded "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" as well.
6. Wham! topped the charts in 1985 with this ballad which was a two sided hit in the U.K. around Christmas time. Can you name the song I want here? (Careful)

Answer: Everything She Wants

The only U.S. number one tune from songs listed was "Everything She Wants" which spent two weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1985. The song was a number two tune in the U.K. and number one in Ireland. It was released around December of 1984 as a double sided hit along with "Last Christmas", which got most of the early airplay because of the release date.
7. One of the most popular MTV videos of all time show five expressionless models "playing" musical instruments in the background. One male singer in the forefront with a shirt and tie sings the lyrics to this number one tune of 1986. Can you remember the tune?

Answer: Addicted to Love

Although recording as a solo artist before, Robert Palmer used his success with the group Power Station, a conglomerate of musicians from different groups (Duran Duran and Chic) to catapult to the top of the charts when "Addicted to Love" spent a week at the number one position on the U.S. Billboard charts in the spring of 1986.

The song also reached number five in the U.K. and number four in Canada. MTV aficionados will recall the video of Palmer singing the tune along with his "backup band" which included five models with identical makeup and clothing.
8. George Michael sang a 1987 duet with this soul goddess which went to number one. Who was the diva?

Answer: Aretha Franklin

George Michael teamed up with Aretha Franklin for "I Knew You Were Waiting (for me)" which became a number one Billboard Hot 100 tune when it reached the top of the charts in the spring of 1987 and reached the top of the charts in the U.K. as well. Surprisingly, the song was the only U.K. number one hit for Franklin.
9. Rick Astley burst on to the scene in 1988 with a number one tune. Can you give me the title?

Answer: Never Gonna Give You Up

"Never Gonna Give You Up" was the first release from Astley's debut album called "Whenever You Need Somebody". The song spent two weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard charts as well as well as being number one in the U.K. Germany Sweden and Australia. Astley started at the top and worked his way down, as this song was his biggest success and he largely faded from the music scene by 1991.
10. This Swedish band got to the top of the charts with a song called "The Look" in 1989. Can you select the right artist?

Answer: Roxette

I wouldn't dare put ABBA as one of the choices. Roxette was widely know in Sweden in the late 1980s but largely unknown outside. "The Look" comes off their second album, called "Look Sharp". It was a number one tune for a week in the U.S. on the Billboard charts, but also made number one in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, West Germany, Switzerland and Norway. Curiously, it only went to number six in Sweden. Just for the record, Roxette is the second highest selling Swedish group of all time, being surpassed only by ABBA of course.
