On The Road Again Trivia Quiz

"The Road" is a dangerous place. Bands go on the road and then disappear, many never to be seen again. A few have managed to resurface... years later. I need your help as a witness to identify the bands in question.

Question 1 of 10
1. 'Missing Band' Case File #1968

Particulars: "The Last Time" that I had to deal with a case like this it was a "Dismal Day". "Could I" really solve it? Early in their career this band could "Take Comfort" in their success, with 11 songs "Belonging" to the Billboard Hot 100 by 1973. "If" only they could have kept things from "Coming Apart". That year, tensions between D.G. and J.G. led to a split, and it would be three years before they had a "Change of Heart" and tried to make things "Just Like Yesterday". The reunion only lasted a year, and in the middle of their tour, J.G. decided he had "Been Too Long On The Road", leaving again. Solo careers ensued, and fans could only "Hold Tight" to their hopes and dreams for a reunion, asking "Why Do You Keep Me Waiting"? "It Don't Matter To Me" why they took 19 years to hit the road again, but in 1996 they got back together for a tour that lasted into '97.

Who is the band in question? Pick them out from the lineup. Don't worry... it's one-way glass... they can't see you.

Question 2 of 10
2. 'Missing Band' Case File #1969

Particulars: I will "Remember" this case "Forever". Four Rs joined forces to create a band (R.D., R.H., R.M. and R.P.), and after a few "Casual Conversations" decided that they would "Surely" succeed. Unfortunately, "It's A Long Road" to success, and the band went through some "Crazy" changes before settling on a winning combination. "Better Days" had arrived and the band became popular, showing how "Times Have Changed". After their 1983 tour, R.H. committed the "Crime of the Century" and left the band. R.D. asked the rest of the group to "Give Me A Chance", and they continued on for a while, but "Sooner Or Later", a breakup was bound to happen. After a 1988 road tour, fans were "Broken Hearted", and everyone had to "Take The Long Way Home". R.D. was a "Dreamer", though, and decided to "Try Again". He reformed the group (without R.H.) in 1996, and they were seen on that dangerous road again as late as 2002. Everyone was forced to go "Home Again" after that tour, and fans wanted to know what "The Meaning" was behind another breakup! With fans "Still In Love", it was great news to hear of a reunion tour (still without R.H.) in 2010 after "Waiting So Long".

Can you look at these rap sheets and pick out the culprits?

Question 3 of 10
3. 'Missing Band' Case File #1971

Particulars: In their "Earlybird" days, this band were simply the backup band for L.R., but she encouraged them to "Take It To The Limit" on their own. Early success gave the group a "Peaceful Easy Feeling", but it takes a "Certain Kind of Fool" to believe that "Life In The Fast Lane" lasts forever. "I Can't Tell You Why" they did it, but during a concert while on tour in 1980, things got "Out of Control" and G.F. and D.F. were "Guilty Of The Crime" of threatening each other while on stage. It seemed like there would be no more "Saturday Night" concerts as the group split up, seemingly for "The Long Run". Each individual tried solo careers as though it was "Business As Usual", but to fans, the "Tryin'" was "Wasted Time". I'd given up on solving this case - I thought they were gone like "James Dean", but "Somebody" told me that they had reunited! "How Long" had it been? A whole fourteen years! G.F. was heard to say that the band had never broken up - they'd just taken a fourteen-year vacation. "Is it true?" I'll let you decide.

You say that you caught them in the act? Please identify them:

Question 4 of 10
4. 'Missing Band' Case File #1972

Particulars: I was handed a Mammoth problem; the Genesis of a new case dealing with a band whose original lead singer left in 1985 to hit the "Mean Street" on his own. The remaining band members found S.H. to replace him, and while some thought they were "Runnin' With the Devil", for many fans he was "Good Enough". In 1996, S.H. said "This Dream is Over" and left the group. It looked like the group might bring back their original singer, but he was "In 'n' Out" almost faster than you can say "Where Have All the Good Times Gone!" An Extreme move led to G.C. taking over lead vocals, but that "Dirty Water Dog" lasted all of three years. In 1999, the group disappeared, seemingly another casualty of that dangerous road. Amazingly, in 2003, S.H. said "Take Me Back" and the band was seen on the road again in 2004. It was "Not Enough", though, and S.H. left again in 2005. Would it take until "Judgement Day" before the group would be seen again? Amazingly, no. After 22 years, the original lead singer became "Top Jimmy" once again, and in 2007 they took to the road once more. Fans could be seen "Dancing In the Street"!

Could you repeat that name, so that I can be sure that I spelled it correctly?

Question 5 of 10
5. 'Missing Band' Case File #1974

Particulars: When I was asked to take this case "I Didn't Have The Nerve To Say No". I wanted to tell them to "Just Go Away", but I knew that "One Way Or Another" I would see it through. I knew that D.H. and C.S. had formed the group "Dreaming" to be musical "Heroes" to the world. For a few years life seemed to move in "Slow Motion" as they experienced the "Rapture" of success, but it did not last. The group came "Undone" in 1982 for a number of reasons, but the catalyst was when C.S. became ill "In The Flesh". D.H. continued on with a solo career after a while, but "The Hardest Part" was "Living In The Real World" and having to repay over $1 million in debt. Despite the passing of the years, "Fan Mail" continued, and eventually the band members were able to "Forgive And Forget" the past. In 1997 they reunited and promptly could be found "Out In The Streets" (...or you could say "on the road") once again.

Thank you for your statement. Please indicate in this box the name of the suspect:

Question 6 of 10
6. 'Missing Band' Case File #1977

Particulars: "O My God", this is perhaps my most disturbing case. At times I have been "Driven To Tears" thinking of how affected my "Friends" were when this group disappeared from the road into the "Darkness" after their 1986 tour. Even my "Mother" said "I'm So Lonely" with them gone; they've left a "Hole In My Life". For 21 years fans waited, yearning for "Contact" with the band they adored, thinking "It's Never Too Late" for them to reunite. And reunite they did - briefly - in 2007 for a road tour, before disbanding again a year later. Should you hope with "Every Breath You Take" for their return? The "Voices Inside My Head" say "It's Alright For You", but eventually, "The Truth Hits Everybody".

Can you confirm again the name that you gave, just for the record?

Question 7 of 10
7. 'Missing Band' Case File #1980

Particulars: When I found this case I thought it was quite The Catch. "Somebody Told Me" that it would be a waste of my time to take it on, but "I Did It Just The Same". The duo (with backup band) did not receive accolades until their second album, but "Don't Ask Me Why", I thought it was a "Shame". Their future looked bright, but "In This Town", nothing lasts "Forever". After ten years (mostly) together, A.L. and D.S. asked each other "Do You Want To Break Up?" They would not "Come Together" again officially until nine years had passed. They promptly hit that vicious road with no "Regrets", but despite their "Revival", fans wondered "How Long?" Sure enough, the duo would "Wrap It Up" again a mere six years later, citing that it would be "The Last Time". "Would I Lie To You?"

Is the band that you saw in this lineup? Please indicate by pointing them out.

Question 8 of 10
8. 'Missing Band' Case File #1984

Particulars: "I Remember When" I was handed this file. I had a "Funny Feeling" that I would have to take things "Step By Step" if I wanted to solve this case. Rather than starting out on their own, the group was formed by M.S. by audition to see who had "The Right Stuff". Early on, the group had to work hard to "Keep On Smilin'", what with M.W. leaving and being replaced by J.K., who in turn left and was replaced by J.M. After that, though, it looked like everyone would "Hold On" and keep "Hangin' Tough". After a successful ten-year run, the group broke up, leaving fans saying "I Can't Believe It's Over". After a whopping fourteen years not seen on that deadly road, they said "Let's Try It Again" and the hiatus was "Officially Over". During their 2008 tour, "Girls" could be heard to say "If You Go Away" again, "I'll Be Waitin'".

Are the suspects that you saw in this room? Please point them out to me.

Question 9 of 10
9. 'Missing Band' Case File #1988

Particulars: This file came to my attention on a "Quiet" day. After learning that this band had said "Farewell and Goodnight" to their fans in the year 2000 after over a decade of success, I was "Crestfallen" as I dwelt on the dangers of the Road and how "Speed Kills". A little research revealed that fans did not have to "Suffer" for long. In 2005, Band leader B.C. announced that "The Fellowship" would "Try, Try, Try" again, and "This Time" things would be "Perfect". Now, "I Am One" who is quick "To Forgive" groups that I "Love". I can only pray that this time, the group's "Age of Innocence" won't run up against a "Doomsday Clock" again.

That's it, take your time. Please identify the group that you saw from this selection.

Question 10 of 10
10. 'Missing Band' Case File #1994

Particulars: My last file was so difficult to figure out that I felt like a Naked Toddler "Bound and Tied" with no chance of escape. What I knew was that S.S. and M.T. had recruited B.M. and S.P. to form a band "In America", and for a while it was "Beautiful". But things began to go the "Wrong Way" with their third album in 2001. The "Signs" were all there for an imminent break-up as B.M. had left the group. They "Weathered" their 2002 tour with stand-in B.H., but it proved to be "One Last Breath" before "Suddenly" announcing their break-up in 2004. "Time" passed, and the members of the band stayed "Away in Silence". Five years after that announcement and seven years since last touring, the members found a way to "Overcome" their differences, forgive the "Unforgiven", and come "Full Circle" to reunite and hit the road again in the fall of 2009. Their fans were able to "Wash Away Those Years" and accept the band back "With Arms Wide Open".

Thank you for taking the time to do this today. What was that name again?

Answer: Bread

David Gates, Jimmy Griffin and Robb Royer joined forces in Los Angeles in 1968, signing with Elektra Records even before choosing the name Bread for the group. Royer had already had success with a prior group called The Pleasure Fair. Over the years, other members of the band included Mike Botts and Larry Knechtel.

Bread achieved mainstream success with their second album "On the Waters" and their first (and only) Billboard Hot 100 #1 song "Make It With You".

There is little chance of there being another reunion since their last time together in 1997, as Griffin and Botts both passed away in 2005, as well as Knechtel in 2009.
2. 'Missing Band' Case File #1969 Particulars: I will "Remember" this case "Forever". Answer: Supertramp

With the financial support of Dutch millionaire Stanley 'Sam' August Miesegaes, Rick Davies gathered together Roger Hodgeson, Richard Palmer and Robert Millar to be the founding members of Supertramp. The UK group has had many members over the years, including Keith Baker, Dave Winthrop, Kevin Currie, Frank Farrell, Dougie Thomson, Mark Hart, Tom Walsh, John Helliwell, and Bob Seibenberg. There is another list of musicians that have participated with the group on tour without actually having membership in the band.

1974's "Crime of the Century" got the band off the ground, hitting #1 in Britain.
3. 'Missing Band' Case File #1971 Particulars: In their "Earlybird" days, this band were simply the backup band for L.R., but she encouraged them to "Take It To The Limit" on their own. Answer: Eagles

Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner formed the Eagles in Los Angeles in 1971. Over the years, the band has also included Don Felder, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit among its members.

The group broke up in 1980 and reformed in 1994. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Answer: Van Halen

Van Halen formed out of the Van Halen brothers' group Mammoth, that they began in 1972, renting a sound system from David Lee Roth. Original bassist Mark Stone was replaced by Michael Anthony, and the group was officially born... as Genesis. They shortly realized that another band already existed by the same name, and they settled on Van Halen. That was 1974.

Over the years, David Lee Roth was replaced by Sammy Hagar, who was later replaced by Gary Cherone. The 2010 incarnation of the band had Roth back on vocals with Eddie's son Wolfgang Van Halen playing bass guitar.
5. 'Missing Band' Case File #1974 Particulars: When I was asked to take this case "I Didn't Have The Nerve To Say No". Please indicate in this box the name of the suspect:

Answer: Blondie

Blondie was born in New York City's music scene when Chris Stein joined the band the Stilettos in 1973 and met vocalist Debbie Harry. A year later Stein and Harry left to form their own group along with Billy O'Connor and Fred Smith, naming themselves Angel and the Snakes. The name-change to Blondie came in late 1975.

Since then, a long list of names have claimed membership of Blondie, including Nigel Harrison, Frank Infante, Gary Valentine, Eddie Martinez, Ivan Kral, Kevin Patrick, Paul Carbonara, Clem Burke, Leigh Foxx, Matt Katz-Bohen, Tommy Kessler and Jimmy Destri.
6. 'Missing Band' Case File #1977 Particulars: "O My God", this is perhaps my most disturbing case. At times I have been "Driven To Tears" thinking of how affected my "Friends" were when this group disappeared from the road into the "Darkness" after their 1986 tour. Answer: The Police

Stewart Copeland formed The Police formed in London in early 1977 along with Sting (Gordon Sumner) and Henry Padovani. They expanded into a quartet with the addition of Andy Summers in the spring, and by August, Padovani left the group. The trio of Sting, Copeland and Summers remained the only members of the group through their ups and downs until their 2008 breakup.

Their 1983 album Synchronicity made #1 on both the UK Album Chart and the US Billboard 200. Their immense popularity was evident when it was determined that they were the world's highest-earning musicians in the year 2008 (due largely to their '07-'08 reunion tour).
7. 'Missing Band' Case File #1980 Particulars: When I found this case I thought it was quite The Catch. "Would I Lie To You?" Is the band that you saw in this lineup? Please indicate by pointing them out.

Answer: Eurythmics

Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart began working together in 1975 within the band The Catch, and again in the band The Tourists before striking out on their own in 1980 as the Eurythmics. Their first big success as the Eurythmics came with the 1983 release of their second album "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)".

Lennox and Stewart have pursued solo careers at various times since forming the Eurythmics, but they have continued to get back together as well. In 2009, though, Lennox stated that she did not foresee any further Eurythmics projects in the future. The duo was conducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005.
8. 'Missing Band' Case File #1984 Particulars: "I Remember When" I was handed this file.

Answer: New Kids on the Block

In Boston in 1984, the original members of New Kids on the Block were found by producer Maurice Starr through an audition process. They were Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood. Two other 'kids' were also brief members: Jamie Kelley and Mark Wahlberg.

Their first, self-titled, album fared poorly, only achieving recognition after the success of their second album "Hangin' Tough". The group's first single from that album, "Please Don't Go Girl" (1988), made it to #10 on the Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Chart, securing NOTKB in the limelight.
9. 'Missing Band' Case File #1988 Particulars: This file came to my attention on a "Quiet" day.

Answer: The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins were formed in Chicago in 1988 by Billy Corgan and James Iha and over the years has included Jimmy Chamberlain, D'arcy Wretzky, Melissa auf der Maur, Jeff Schroeder, Mike Byrne and Nicole Fiorentino. The group first achieved mainstream success with the release of its second album "Siamese Dream" in 1993.
10. 'Missing Band' Case File #1994 Particulars: My last file was so difficult to figure out that I felt like a Naked Toddler "Bound and Tied" with no chance of escape.

Answer: Creed

High school friends Scott Stapp and Mark Tremonti got together in 1994 to form a band, finding Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips to fill the musical gaps. Originally the band took the name Naked Toddler, along with short-lived member Brian Brasher, and played the local Florida music scene.

Shortly after their incarnation, Marshall suggested the new name Creed, and they continued to play shows in Florida until they were discovered by manager Jeff Hanson. From there, the group continued to be 'discovered' by more and more influential music industry people, and their debut album "My Own Prison" was remixed and rereleased to great acclaim.
