Of the four options, only Marlene Dietrich was born in Germany. Gardner and Hayworth were both American born and Ingrid Bergman was born in Sweden.

"Lili Marleen" was written as a poem in 1915 by German soldier, Hans Leip. Set to music in 1938, it was recorded the following year by Lale Anderson. An English version was recorded by her in 1942. Marlene Dietrich recorded her rendition in 1944 at the behest of the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (OSS). The spelling of the song was subsequently changed as well to "Lili Marlene" to correspond with her name. Dietrich said at a 1960s concert to introduce the song:

"Now, here is a song that is very close to my heart. I sang it during the war. I sang it for three long years, all through Africa, Sicily, Italy, to Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, to England, through France, through Belgium ... [long pause] ... to Germany, and to Czechoslovakia. The soldiers loved it, 'Lili Marlene'".

The song was first recorded in 1974 by co-writer Jackie DeShannon for her album "New Arrangement". Kim Carnes took it to number one on multiple charts, including the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1981. It was recorded for her album "Mistaken Identity". The song has been covered by the likes of Taylor Swift, Courtney Love and Kylie Minogue too.

Harlow is mentioned in the very first line of the song:

"Her hair is Harlow gold/ her lips are sweet surprise"

And then Garbo:

"And she'll tease you, she'll unease you
All the better just to please you
She's precocious, and she knows just what it

Bruce Springsteen wrote "Fire" in 1977 with the idea in mind that it could be recorded by Elvis Presley. Elvis passed away that same year before he received the demo from Springsteen. He went on to record the song himself in 1978, but was only released on his 1986 album "Live/1975-85". It managed to chart at position forty-six on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The Pointer Sisters recorded the song for their 1978 album "Energy" and took it to second place on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It managed a top stop on the South African, Belgium, Dutch and New Zealand charts.

INXS recorded "Beautiful Girl" in 1992 for their album "Welcome to Wherever You Are". It was the fifth single to be released from the album and managed a tenth position on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. The album fared fairly well, reaching top position on the UK and Swedish album charts, but only managed a second place in home country, Australia.

According to an interview with the band's keyboardist, Andrew Farriss, he was inspired to write the song by the birth of his daughter. The lyrics to the song do not necessarily convey this:

"Nicky's in the corner

Answer: Toto

Toto are an American rock band, formed in 1977. They recorded thirteen studio albums from 1978 to 2006 and then disbanded in 2008. The band reformed in 2010 and recorded two more albums, "Toto XIV" released in 2015 and "40 Trips Around the Sun" release date 2018. From the band's inception, only two members have remained constant in the lineup, guitarist Steve Lukather and keyboardist David Paich. They have had four different vocalists in that time however, with two of them actually alternating time with the band.

"Hold the Line" was from the band's eponymous 1978 debut album. "Rosanna" and "Africa" were recorded for the 1982 album "Toto IV" and they all charted well on the Billboard Hot 100 charts reaching a fifth, second and first place respectively.

"Fever" was originally recorded in 1956 by Little Willie John. It managed a respectable twenty-fourth position on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, but it was only until Peggy Lee recorded the song in 1958 for her album "Things are Swingin'" that the song broke the top ten on the same chart, reaching eighth position. At the 1st Annual Grammy Awards held in 1959, Peggy Lee's "Fever" was nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Female Vocal Performance. The song was subsequently covered by Madonna and Beyonce.

Interesting side note, Pocahontas was actually married to tobacco plantation owner John Rolfe, although she had met John Smith first. According to Smith's book "Generall Historie" published in 1624, Pocahontas saved his life when her father wanted to kill him and she kept the Jamestown colony well provisioned saving the colonists from starvation.

Don Williams managed a thirty-third position on the US Billboard Country Songs chart with the song, but Jennings took it to number one on the same chart a year later.

"Amanda" was written by Bob McDill in 1973. A prolific songwriter, he wrote over thirty number one hits in his career and wrote songs for artists like Jerry Lee Lewis, Juice Newton, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs and Anne Murray.

"Living Next Door to Alice" was written by great songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman in 1972 and first released by Australian group New World and managed a top forty position on the Australian chart. Smokie recorded their rendition in 1976 and took it to the top of the Australian, Austrian, Dutch, German, Irish, Norwegian and Swiss charts. The song went to number five on the UK chart, but only managed twenty-fifth position on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman wrote a number of number one hits through the years. They have written songs for Tina Turner, Suzi Quatro, Tony Basil, The Sweet and Huey Lewis and the News.

"Proud Mary" was written by John Fogerty in 1968 and recorded by Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1969 for their album "Bayou Country". Ike & Tina recorded their version in 1971 for the album "Workin' Together". Creedence took the song to second position and the Turners to fourth position on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Leonard Nimoy, Spock from "Star Trek", recorded five albums from 1967 to 1970. His version of "Proud Mary" was recorded for the album "The New World of Leonard Nimoy" (1970).

Zucchero first recorded "Senza una donna (Without a Woman)" for his 1987 album "Blue's". His 1991 re-recorded single with Paul Young reached top position on five separate world charts and second position on ten more, including the UK chart. The song was certified gold in France, Sweden, Belgium, Italy, Norway and in the US.

Zucchero is a popular Italian musician active since 1970. From 1983 to 2016, he released thirteen albums. He received and Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, he has also won four Festivalbar, nine Wind Music Awards, two World Music Awards, six IFPI Europe Platinum Awards. He was also nominated for a Grammy Award for the song "You Are So Beautiful" in 2007 in the category of Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for singing back-up vocals on Sam Moore's duet with the late Billy Preston , but lost out to "God Bless the Child" by George Benson, Al Jarreau and Jill Scott.
