Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Way back in 1971, where did the Ozark Mountain Daredevils first come together as a band?

Answer: Springfield, Missouri

The original band was called Family Tree and consisted of Larry Lee, Steve Cash, Michael Supe Granda, John Dillon, Buddy Brayfield, and Randle Chowning. After a few changes of name, they settled on Cosmic Corncob & His Amazing Ozark Mountain Daredevils, which they thankfully shortened.
2. The Ozark Mountain Daredevils scored a chart hit in 1974 in USA and Canada with their first single from their debut album. What was the song?

Answer: If You Wanna Get To Heaven

I still think that this debut album, affectionately known as "Quilt" due to its cover photo, is one of the best albums I have ever owned. Other tracks found here include "Chicken Train", "Standin' On The Rock" and "Black Sky". "If You Wanna Get To Heaven" got just outside the top 20 in both USA and Canada but their best seller by some distance was "Jackie Blue", a top ten hit in both countries as well as in New Zealand and South Africa. Of the other possible answers, all were top five hits in USA Billboard Hot 100 in 1974, "Come And Get Your Love" for Redbone, "Oh My My" was Ringo Starr's follow up to "You're Sixteen" and "The Show Must Go On" was a Three Dog Night cover of the Leo Sayer track.
3. Which founding member of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils is also an accomplished author, having written a trilogy of historical fantasy books about "The Meq"?

Answer: Steve Cash

The Meq are an ancient race of people from the Basque Pyrenees, who even when they are hundreds of years old, retain the outward appearance of a 12 year old. The first in the trilogy was "The Meq" (2002) and was followed by "Time Dancers" (2006) and "The Remembering" (2011). Cash can be heard singing playing harmonica on the majority of the Ozark's albums.
4. Following the band's first European tour in 1976, co founder Randle Chowning left the band. Which Norwegian replaced Chowning on guitar?

Answer: Rune Walle

Walle was a Norwegian guitarist that the boys had met on the tour, who had been hailed at one point as "the Norwegian Bob Dylan". Taking a huge gamble, he left Norway and joined the band, with whom his first live gig was as support to the Beach Boys. Walle was with the band until 1980. Of the other answers, Bjorn Ulvaeus was a member of Swedish pop band ABBA, George Kooymans founded Dutch rockers Golden Earring, and Uli Jon Roth was guitarist with German giants, the Scorpions.
5. Which co founder of the Ozarks wrote the definitive history of the band, "It Shined - The Saga of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils"?

Answer: Michael "Supe" Granda

"Supe" is the only member of the band to have been a constant member, although he has also recorded with other artists, most notably The Flying Burrito Brothers offshoot, Burrito Deluxe, with whom he recorded two albums, and his own side project, Supe and The Sandwiches.
6. What was the title of the band's third album, which followed "The Ozark Mountain Daredevils" (1973) and "It'll Shine When It Shines" (1974)?

Answer: The Car Over The Lake

This 1975 album had a cover featuring a car over a lake which was based on one of the band's old college gig posters. Unlike the previous two albums, which had given the band Billboard Hot 100 success with "If You Want To Get To Heaven" (1973) and "Jackie Blue" (1975), this album failed to generate any hit singles, but had some good tracks, in particular "Keep On Churnin'" and "Time Warp".
7. Larry Lee was a talented multi instrumentalist for the band, playing drums, guitar and keyboards, but which unusual instrument is he an accomplished player of, that can be heard on the band's debut album?

Answer: Saw

The singing saw is a regular hand saw, played as a musical instrument and can be played with a violin bow, although often a simple wooden dowel is used as a bow. Ozark Mountain Daredevils are no strangers to unusual instruments as also on their debut album, John Dillon played an Ozark mountain mouth bow on the track "Chicken Train".
8. In 1976, keyboard player for the Ozarks, Buddy Brayfield, left the band to pursue a career in which field?

Answer: Medicine

Brayfield's decision seems to have paid off as he received his medical degree from A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona and has been a respected general practitioner and palliative care doctor in Missouri for many years, although as a doctor, he does go by his birth name of Samuel not Buddy.

He still finds time to perform at occasional concerts with the band, although these appearances are now very few and far between.
9. Which legendary UK festival did the band play in 1975, third on the bill behind Yes and Supertramp?

Answer: Reading

The fact that a band, still largely unknown in UK, was so high on the bill says a lot about the high regard the Ozarks were held in. The other headliners from this year were Hawkwind and Wishbone Ash, with artists such as Joan Armatrading, UFO, Thin Lizzy and Judas Priest playing as support acts. Dulwich festival is a poetry festival, Hay is a literary festival and Crickhowell is a walking and hiking festival.
10. Which band, better known for hits such as "Tonight Tonight" and "1979" (both 1996), recorded a cover version of "Jackie Blue" on the 2012 reissue of their "Pisces Iscariot" album?

Answer: Smashing Pumpkins

Although "Jackie Blue" wasn't included on the Smashing Pumpkins' original release of their 1994 "Pisces Iscariot" album, it was on the 2012 reissue. The album also featured covers of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl" and "Venus In Furs" originally done by the Velvet Underground.
