Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what song does someone 'shake like an incurable'?

Answer: 'Hole in My Life'

One of many good songs from the very first Police album, 'Outlandos D'Amour'
2. Apart from putting on the red light, which of the following is something else Roxanne does NOT have to do in the song 'Roxanne'?

Answer: wear that dress tonight

'...walk the streets for money, you don't care if it's wrong or if it's right...'
3. 'A sleep trance, a dream dance, a shared ___________, synchronicity...'

Answer: romance

Inspired by the theories of Carl Jung, Sting wrote not one but two songs called 'Sychronicity' for the 'Synchronicity' album. This lyric is from 'Sychronicity I'. 'Sychronicity II' was better known, but I thought 'Sychronicity I' was a cooler song.
4. In 'Sychronicity II', 'many miles away', which one of these events was NOT going on?

Answer: something crawls on the shore

A very dark song, 'Synchronicity II' was a pretty big hit circa 1983.
5. Which description of 'Be My Girl - Sally' is most accurate?

Answer: Sting leads up-tempo refrain; Andy Summers recites verses to instrumental accompaniment

Despite the catchy chorus, Andy Summers' weird poem about a guy with a kink for a blow-up doll was not A-side material.
6. 'Since you've gone I've been _____ _____ ___ ____ , I dream at night....'

Answer: lost without a trace

From 'Every Breath You Take'. Despite its painful origins in Sting's divorce and its creepy overtones, this simple song was interpreted by many as a love song and it was a monster hit. Sting said at the time that musically it was the least imaginative song he'd ever written. I agree with him.
7. Name the song: '...and we lost our faith and prayed to the T.V....'

Answer: 'Born in the 50's'

Many girls like me had teenage crushes on Sting even though he was born in the 50's - almost old enough to be our dad! Whoa!
8. Name the song: 'Our so-called leaders speak, with words they try to jail ya...'

Answer: 'Spirits in the Material World'

The Police dramatically changed their sound on their fourth album, 'Ghost in the Machine', my personal favourite. 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic' was the other big hit off this record.
9. What is the first line of 'Can't Stand Losin' You'?

Answer: Called you so many times today

This song, in which a jilted guy threatens to commit suicide, created controversy in England when it was released. The 45 record jacket depicting a dead man hanging by the neck didn't help matters. That was way before Eminem. La plus ca change...
10. In the song 'Secret Journey', what does the holy man point to when Sting sings, 'This does not seem to touch you...'?

Answer: the rain

One of many solid tracks from 'Ghost in the Machine'.
11. What was 'caught in a high tree top'?

Answer: black hat

From the song 'King of Pain'. I thought it was a black cat at first, but I believe the lyric sheet straightened me out.
12. How long has the protagonist been hoping someone will get his 'Message in a Bottle'?

Answer: one year

'A year has passed since I wrote my note. I should have known this right from the start.'
13. '____ _____ ____ , she's waiting, his car is warm and dry...'

Answer: wet bus stop

From 'Don't Stand So Close to Me'. Best remembered for its reference to Nabokov's 'Lolita', this song was a huge hit from the third album, 'Zenyatta Mondatta'.
14. 'Even though my life before was ______ , now I know my love for her goes on...'

Answer: tragic

From 'Every Little Thing She Does is Magic'. Sting still plays this at his solo shows, a very good thing since it's such a fun live song.
15. Name the song: 'Is anybody alive in here? Is anybody at all in here?'

Answer: 'Miss Gradenko'

The only Stewart Copeland song to make the 'Synchronicity' album. Even as it contributed to the Police's phenomenal success, Sting's superior ability to write hit songs created conflict among the band members and lead to the band's demise. The irony!
