Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these was a 1989 Madonna hit?

Answer: Like a Prayer

"Like a Prayer" was the name of Madonna's fourth album and the first single released from it. It was a long-awaited album for many of her fans, coming three years after her prior release. Madonna dedicated the album to her mother, who died when she was a child.
2. Which band recorded the 1980s classic "Livin' on a Prayer"?

Answer: Bon Jovi

"Livin' on a Prayer" was released in 1986 on Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet" album. It tells the story of a (fictional) couple, Tommy and Gina, who are having financial troubles. Lead singer Jon Bon Jovi wasn't happy with the original cut of the song, so it was reworked with a new bass line before release.
3. The hit song "My Prayer", released by the Platters in 1956, was actually written 30 years prior.

Answer: True

Violinist Georges Boulanger wrote the song in 1926, originally giving it a French title, "Avant de Mourir". It was released by Boulanger with its now-known lyrics in 1939. While the Platters version is perhaps the best known, the song has been covered many times, by artists as diverse as Tom Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Roy Orbison and the Righteous Brothers.
4. Dionne Warwick released a popular prayer-themed song in 1967, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. What is its correct official title?

Answer: I Say a Little Prayer

Warwick took "I Say a Little Prayer" to the US top 10 in 1967, and this feat was repeated by Aretha Franklin when she covered the song less than 12 months later. Franklin's version was quite different to the original, adding piano and substantial backing vocals.
5. Which tenor recorded a duet version of "The Prayer" with Celine Dion in 1999?

Answer: Andrea Bocelli

Bocelli and Dion originally recorded solo versions of the song (he in Italian, she in English). They agreed to record a duet version which uses both languages, and it was released as a promotional single in 1999. Dion later also recorded the song as a duet with Josh Groban.
6. Which US heavy metal band recorded a song called "Prayer" in 2002?

Answer: Disturbed

The video clip for "Prayer" was banned from a number of television stations due to its references to the September 11, 2001 attacks. The band did not dispute the connection, but also noted that the song had a broader theme about a conversation between the lead singer, David Draiman, and God.
7. Both US Country singer Burl Ives and Australian Indigenous singer Jimmy Little had songs about prayer called what?

Answer: Royal Telephone

There have been several songs written with the title "Royal Telephone"; most of which are along the theme of communicating with God. The Jimmy Little version, for example, includes the line: "Telephone to glory, oh what joy divine. I can feel the current moving on the line."
8. What did Duran Duran want you to do with a prayer in their 1982 song?

Answer: Save it

"Save a Prayer" was the third single from Duran Duran's "Rio" album. When it reached number two on the UK charts, it became their most successful release (up to that time).
9. Billy Joel recorded a song about a particular type of prayer in 1973. What was it called?

Answer: Travelin' Prayer

"Travelin' Prayer" was part of Billy Joel's classic "Piano Man" album. While the single release was not a huge success (barely breaking into the US top 100), it was covered by Dolly Parton in 1999 and she won a Grammy for it.
10. When Cliff Richard decided to release a version of the Lord's Prayer for charity in 1999, what did he call it?

Answer: The Millennium Prayer

"The Millennium Prayer" was sung to the tune of "Auld Lang Syne". While he did not release it with the intention of entering the charts, it did have some success, spending two weeks in the number one UK spot. This was despite some harsh commentary from music critics both in the UK and abroad.
