Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first Queen record to feature synthesizers?

Answer: The Game

Yep, up until then all Queen records had 'No Synths' written in the sleeve notes. The band felt synths produced only sterile and emotionless sounds. They rightly believed they could achieve better results from traditional instruments combined with some untraditional recording techniques.
2. Which Queen album worried their fans into thinking the band had lost its rock 'n' roll feel and was turning into a disco/funk outfit?

Answer: Hot Space

At the famous Milton Keynes Bowl show in 1982, Freddie practically apologised for the album. I quite like it.
3. What album did Queen release in 1984?

Answer: The Works

Many considered this record to be a welcome return to form. It featured the classic songs 'Radio Ga Ga', 'I Want to Break Free', 'Hammer to Fall' and 'It's a Hard Life. All four of these singles were written solely by each member of the band (Roger, John, Brian and Freddie respectively).
4. Which one song did Brian play three different guitars on during their live shows from 1979-1986?

Answer: Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Sounds strange, but Brian would play an acoustic for the first part of the song, take it off quickly and strap on a Telecaster for the solo, then strap on his Red Special for the outro.
5. Freddie himself was a keen plank-spanker. The first guitars he played live on stage were 12-string Ovations. From 1984-1986, what type of guitar did Freddie seem to prefer?

Answer: a yellow Fender Telecaster

This guitar was usually very low in the mix, which is a shame as Freddie had a very unusual strumming style.
6. Which musical keys did Freddie prefer to play in during the 70s era of Queen?

Answer: A and E flats

'He has a thing about A and E flat', Brian said in an interview from 1982.
7. What instrument other than guitar, bass, drums, piano, and the voices can be heard on 'Now I'm Here'?

Answer: an organ

Listen very carefully. There's an organ on 'Great King Rat' as well.
8. Despite Queen's credibility and their original integrity being compromised by the remaining members' collaborations with boy-bands, which band has firmly stood by them and will often remind us how brilliant they were and how we should all respect their music?

Answer: Foo Fighters

Dave and Taylor from Foo Fighters pop up in Queen documentaries everywhere!
9. Which make of amp is Brian often associated with?

Answer: Vox amps

As far as I know, he's always used 'em.
10. From the early days, among his larger amps, Brian also uses a tiny amplifier made by whom?

Answer: John Deacon

It's made from an old hi-fi speaker.
11. What type of piano did Freddie play on stage during the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' days?

Answer: a white Bechstein grand

It's clearly visible in the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' video.
12. Queen collaborated with David Bowie for the Number 1 smash 'Under Pressure'. Which other Queen song featured his vocals, but was eventually never released?

Answer: Cool Cat

It's available on loads of bootlegs. Never buy bootlegs, kids- you'll always get ripped off.
13. Which of the following was never covered by Queen?

Answer: 'Shaddapayaface' by Joe Dolche

Queen has never covered Joe Dolche's 'Shaddapayaface'.
14. The piano used to be very important to the band. By 1989's 'Miracle' album the band all but stopped using it. Besides the bonus track 'Hang on in There', and very briefly on the title track, what's the only other track from that album to feature the piano?

Answer: Breakthru

The 'traditional' sounding intro to that tune is actually a completely different song the bootleggers have called 'A New Life is Born'. This tacked on tune actually sounds a lot like 'Lilly of the Valley' when heard in its entirety.
15. Besides bass, what other instrument does John Deacon play in the recorded version of 'You're My Best Friend'?

Answer: the electric piano

He wrote that one, you know.
