Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote "Seaside Rendezvous"?

Answer: Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury's music was notoriously experimental. Many of his songs brought out the more whimsical side to Queen's music----Freddie integrated countless genres ranging from opera to rockabilly in his music to form Queen's distinctive sound. (Personally, Freddie Mercury is my favorite member of the group)
2. Who wrote "Save Me"?

Answer: Brian May

May's lyrics were usually much more serious than Mercury's. Freddie Mercury and Brian May both wrote the most songs for Queen.
3. Who wrote "Sheer Heart Attack"?

Answer: Roger Taylor

All of the "speed" songs were written by Roger Taylor. Roger generally did not write as many songs as the other band members did.
4. This is a no-brainer: Who wrote "Bohemian Rhapsody"?

Answer: Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury was a huge fan of opera. In the late '80s, he recorded an album with the Spanish opera diva Montserrat Caballe called "Barcelona", which was entirely composed of rock-opera duets that he wrote. The title song was used as the theme song for the Olympics in 1992, only a year after he died.
5. Who wrote "Back Chat"?

Answer: John Deacon

John Deacon frequently incorporated the bass guitar in his songs more than most songwriters did, which gave many of them like "Another One Bites The Dust" an edgey, rhythmic sound.
6. Who wrote "Calling All Girls"?

Answer: Roger Taylor

The single was released on Queen's HOT SPACE album, which focused more on disco and dance music. The album was not successful at all; apparently, fans preferred Queen's more original sounds.
7. Who wrote "In Only Seven Days"?

Answer: John Deacon

When he wasn't concentrated on an all-out funk sound like "Another One Bites the Dust," Deacon's songs were usually very mellow and sentimental.
8. Here's another no-brainer to Queen fans: which song did Brian May write?

Answer: We Will Rock You

It bugs me that this song is played at every sporting event, yet only Queen fans are aware of who originally wrote this crowd favorite.
9. Who wrote "I Want To Break Free"?

Answer: John Deacon

Most of John Deacon's songs were extremely pop-oriented and did not incorporate the chorus as much; usually, his songs were not distinctive in the sense that a non-fan could not tell immediately that it was a Queen song just by hearing a clip of it. However, the peculiar visuals in "I Want To Break Free" got the music video banned in America.
10. Which of the following were written by all four members together?

Answer: Innuendo

"Innuendo" was Queen's last studio album. Despite his illness (which had gotten so serious that he knew he was going to die soon), Freddie Mercury insisted that Queen go ahead and release the album.
11. Who wrote "Las Palabras de Amor"?

Answer: Brian May

This song was written with Queen's Hispanic fans in mind. This is such an underrated song-----"Las Palabras de Amor" has to be the prettiest song that Queen ever did, in my opinion.
12. Who wrote "Flash"?

Answer: Brian May

Queen wrote the whole soundtrack for the 1980 tongue-in-cheek sci fi movie "Flash Gordon," "Flash's Theme" being the most enduring song from the soundtrack among Queen fans.
13. Who wrote "White Queen"?

Answer: Brian May

Originally released on the "Queen II" album. Rumor has it that Brian May wrote this song in college in light of a situation involving a girl he was interested in, but he was too nervous to make a move.
14. Who wrote "Radio Ga Ga"?

Answer: Roger Taylor

According to the Wikipedia: "Taylor originally conceived it as "Radio Ca-Ca" (apparently from something his toddler son once said), a slam against radio for the decrease in variety of programming and the type of music being played. It was eventually changed to "Radio Ga Ga", because it sounded better, clearer, and rolled off the tongue easier.

There are rumors that the publishers objected to the original title (caca being Spanish and Dutch for crap, with much the same cultural connotations)."
15. Who wrote "Keep Yourself Alive"?

Answer: Brian May

"Keep Yourself Alive" is Queen's first song with Freddie Mercury.
16. Who wrote "Misfire"?

Answer: John Deacon

"Misfire" came out on the "Sheer Heart Attack" album and is the first official song John Deacon wrote with Queen.
17. Who wrote "Hijack My Heart"?

Answer: Roger Taylor

"Hijack My Heart" was originally a B-side for "The Invisible Man" but was never released.
18. In the song "I Want It All", the phrase "I want it all, and I want it now" came from which band member?

Answer: Brian May

Brian May was directly quoting a phrase his ex-wife used to say all the time.
19. Who wrote "The Ring (The Hypnotic Seduction of Dale)"?

Answer: Freddie Mercury

"The Ring" is an instrumental accompaniment to the scene in "Flash Gordon" where Emperor Ming the Merciless hypnotizes Dale Arden with his magic ring and forces her to come to him....
20. Who wrote "One Year of Love"?

Answer: John Deacon

Like I said, lots of John Deacon's songs were very sentimental. This song features Freddie belting in a scratchy voice, indicating his poor vocal health and a killer saxophone solo.
