Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Why don't you ask him if he's going to stay? Why don't you ask him if he's going away?"

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

The opening lines to the title track of the 1979 album "Tusk." This song features some back-up from the marching band at the University of Southern California.
2. "Hey -- if we can solve any problems, why do we lose so many tears?"

Answer: Paul Young

Even though this song was written by Daryl Hall, and appeared on an early Hall and Oates album, it was Paul Young's version that made it a hit in 1985. Incidentally, "everytime" is not even a word -- the title should read "Every Time You Go Away"! Shame on you, Daryl...and Paul. Grammar counts. =)
3. "If a picture paints a thousand words, then why can't I paint you?"

Answer: Bread

The opening lines of Bread's biggest hit, "If."
4. "What's your definition of dirty, baby? What do you consider pornography?"

Answer: George Michael

From the bouncy, irreverent "I Want Your Sex," one of the many hits from the 1987 album "Faith."
5. "Can I take you out to the pictures, Joan?" (HINT: The way it's sung, the word "Joan" actually contains four syllables!)

Answer: The Beatles

A question that a young man named Maxwell Edison (who, we're told, is "majoring in medicine") asks of Joan in "Maxwell's Silver Hammer," from the 1969 album "Abbey Road."
6. "How could we let it slip away?/We've come too far to leave it all behind/How could we end it all this way?"

Answer: Chicago

Some last-minute desperation from Peter Cetera and the gang's "If You Leave Me Now," a hit from the 1976 album "Chicago X." This song was actually the band's first single to reach number one on the Billboard charts.
7. "Oh, Superman, where are you now...when everything's gone wrong, somehow?"

Answer: Genesis

A hopeful if fruitless question from "Land of Confusion," a hit single from the 1986 album "Invisible Touch." (Incidentally, Laurie Anderson, R.E.M., and Joe Jackson have all, at least once, incorporated Superman references into their lyrics...so don't feel bad if you got this one wrong.)
8. "Satin sheets are very romantic -- what happens when you're not in bed?"

Answer: Madonna

A word to the wise from "Express Yourself," the huge hit from the 1989 album "Like a Prayer." (Just BARELY pre-90's, this one!)
9. "What does it matter to you, when you've got a job to do?"

Answer: Wings

From the oddly playful bridge of "Live and Let Die," the otherwise intense theme song of the 1974 "James Bond" film of the same name.

Anyone scratching his or her head and thinking, "Nuh-uh! That's a Guns 'n' Roses song!" is welcome to exit the quiz right now. I mean, come on.
10. "How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy?"

Answer: Sting

From "Russians," the brooding, weighty anti-nuclear-war anthem from Sting's first solo album, "Dream of the Blue Turtles" (1985). Doctor J. Robert Oppenheimer was the chief scientist assigned to the infamous Manhattan Project, which produced the first operational nuclear weapon.
11. "Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?"

Answer: Carole King

From "So Far Away," off of the 1971 album "Tapestry," which put singer-songwriter-producer Carole King on the map.
12. "What have they done to the earth? What have they done to our fair sister?"

Answer: The Doors

From "When the Music's Over," the final track of "Strange Days," The Doors' seminal 1967 album.
13. "When I tell him that I'm falling in love, what does he say?"

Answer: 'Til Tuesday

From "Voices Carry," the biggest hit this band ever had, which can be found on their debut 1985 album of the same name. Lead singer and bass player Aimee Mann went on to forge an impressive, if less publicized, solo career which continues to this day. She's one of my favorite musicians -- check her out!
14. "Do you believe in rock and roll? Can music save your mortal soul? Can you teach me how to dance real slow?"

Answer: Don McLean

From "American Pie," the tribute to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper that became a number one hit in 1972...although it first appeared on a 1971 album.

("Nuh-uh! Madonna wrote that!" Um...yeah. Okay. Anyone thinking that, again, should probably leave.)
15. "Weren't you the one who tried to break me with goodbye? Did you think I'd crumble? Did you think I'd lay down and die?"

Answer: Gloria Gaynor

From the 1979 disco smash "I Will Survive." Again, if you guys enjoyed this quiz, let me know -- there's more where these came from!
