Gregory Carroll wrote "Just One Look" with Doris. She used her pen name, Doris Payne, as the author. She was born Doris Higginson in the Bronx. She began working as an usherette at the Apollo Theater using the name Doris Payne where she came to the attention of James Brown. Doris changed her stage name to Troy and started singing professionally with acts such as Solomon Burke, Dionne Warwick and The Drifters before she released "Just One Look" as a single on Atlantic Records. Although the British Invasion cut her US chart career short, she ended up doing backing vocals for such artists as The Rolling Stones, Humble Pie, George Harrison, Carly Simon, Dusty Springfield and more. She also did tracks for Pink Floyd on "Dark Side of the Moon" (1973). A stage musical titled "Mama, I Want To Sing" was produced about her life. Doris passed away from emphysema in 2004 at age 67.
"Just One Look" was the first Hollies song to hit the US charts in 1964. The highest spot they reached in the US was with the 1972 Number Two hit, "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress".

Harris recorded his version of the Jimmy Webb composition on his "A Tramp Shining" album in in 1968. Ten years later Donna Summer recorded a version clocking in at over eight minutes on her "Live and More" LP. When an edited version was released as a single it became her first Number One hit. Among the more than fifty cover versions are renditions by such diverse artists as The Four Tops, Frank Sinatra, Waylon Jennings, The Three Degrees, Andy Williams and The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. Carrie Underwood sang the song during season four of American Idol. Anita Ward is known for "Ring my Bell". Gloria Gaynor recorded "I Will Survive" and Evelyn "Champagne" King recorded disco classics including "Shame".

The song was Harrison's final Number One US solo hit. When he was on an early visit to the US, Harrison purchased a copy of the self-titled James Ray album and later revived one of the songs on the album, "Got My Mind Set On You". John Lennon purchased a copy of Ray's "If You Gotta Make A Fool of Somebody". James Ray was a DC native who was born James Ray Raymond.

As a duo they have won two Emmy awards.
In addition to "Go Away Little Girl" Donny Osmond also had a Number Three hit with a cover version of Paul Anka's 1960 hit, "Puppy Love", in 1971. Donny's first solo hit was "Sweet and Innocent," peaking at Number Seven earlier the same year.

After their initial hit with "If You Don't KNow Me By Now" they followed up with "The Love I Lost" in 1973 and "Don't Leave Me This Way" in 1975. Simply Red included the song on their "A New Flame" LP in 1989. "La La Means I Love You" was released by The Delfonics, "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)" was by Jr. Walker & The All Stars and "Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie" was recorded by Jay and The Techniques.

The Drifters were scheduled for a recording session and while selecting material they initially were not attracted to the song. After a significant arrangement change they recorded their Top Ten version. Since their release of the song such diverse artists as Frank Sinatra and Sly and the Family Stone have done their own renditions.
George Benson won a Grammy for the version he recorded on his 1978 album, "Weekend in L.A.".
The Tymes had a sixties hit with "So Much In Love". The Coasters had several hits including "Searchin'" and "Young Blood". The Isley Brothers may be best known for their 1962 hit, "Twist and Shout".

Eddie Floyd and Steve Cropper composed "Knock on Wood" and Floyd recorded the tune for Stax Records. Amii Stewart reached the highest point on the charts with her disco rendition of the song. Stewart was in the touring company of "Bubbling Brown Sugar" in 1975 when she met Hansa Records producer Barry Leng. An album was released with the majority of the songs songs penned or co-written by Leng, but it was Amii's version of "Knock on Wood" that placed her in the one-hit-wonder camp.

In 1998 Mary Griffin played an Amii Stewart-based character in the movie "54". David Bowie added "Knock on Wood" to his tour repertoire in the early seventies and released the song a single in 1974. Alicia Bridges recorded "I Love The Nightlife (Disco Round)" in 1978. Samantha Sang recorded "Emotion" and "You Keep Me Dancing" the same year. Vicki Sue Robinson had a hit with "Turn the Beat Around" in 1976.

The Diamonds and The Rays released their versions in 1957, with The Rays having the bigger hit, reaching Number Three. In 1964 The Searchers had a hit with "Love Potion Number Nine", originally done by the Clovers in 1959. Gerry and the Pacemakers had a Number 14 hit with the Bobby Darin tune, "I'll Be There", in 1965. "I'm Telling You Now" was a breakout hit for Freddy and the Dreamers in 1963.
