Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which area of the Soviet Union was NOT mentioned in the lyrics to "Back in the U.S.S.R.?

Answer: Siberia

The Beatles were friends as well as rivals of the U.S. band the Beach Boys. Paul McCartney combined the theme of Chuck Berry's "Back in the U.S.A." and the Beach Boys "California Girls" to create a parody where the singer had left Miami and was glad to be back home in the Soviet Union.
"Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out, they leave the west behind, and Moscow girls make me sing and shout that Georgia's always on my my my my my my my my my mind."
2. What was the name of Desmond's love interest in "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"?

Answer: Molly

Paul McCartney first heard the phrase "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", which means "life goes on," from a Nigerian Congo player named Jimmy Anonmuogharan Scott Emuakpor, who played in the band Bad Manners. Jimmy sued to recover royalties but was thereafter put in jail for unpaid spousal support.

The suit was settled when Paul paid the back support and he and Jimmy remained friends thereafter. "Desmond has a barrow in the marketplace, Molly is the singer in a band, Desmond says to Molly, girl I like you face and Molly says this as she takes him by the hand, Ob-la-di, ob-la-da,life goes on, bra, la la how the life goes on."
3. What was hunted in "The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill"?

Answer: Tiger

On one of his many retreats to visit the Maharishi in India, John Lennon met a young American college student named Richard Cooke who had actually gone on a hunt with his mother and killed a tiger. John wrote this song in mockery of a tiger hunt.
"Hey, Bungalow Bill, what did you kill, Bungalow Bill, hey, Bungalow Bill, what did you kill, Bungalow Bill.
He went out tiger hunting with his elephant and gun. In case of accidents he always took his mom.
He's the all American bullet-headed Saxon mother's son, all the children sing."
4. What type of animal was mentioned in "Happiness Is a Warm Gun"?

Answer: Lizard

John Lennon's inspiration for the song was from a gun magazine article "Happiness Is a Warm Gun in Your Hands", and expresses his contempt of the U.S. firearms lobby.
"She's not a girl who misses much, do do do do do do, oh, yeah.
She's well acquainted with the touch of the velvet hand like a lizard on a window pane."
5. Which English history figure was referenced in "I'm So Tired"?

Answer: Walter Raleigh

The song was written by John Lennon after some exhaustive and intense meditation sessions in India.
"I'm so tired, I'm feeling so upset, although I'm so tired, I'll have another cigarette and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid get, you'd say I'm putting you on."
6. What time of day was the singing in "Blackbird"?

Answer: Night

In support of the U.S. civil rights movement, Paul McCartney used the symbolism of a blackbird as encouragement to black women to keep faith during their struggle.
"Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly. All your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise."
7. What article of clothing was worn by the "Piggies"?

Answer: Shirts

Originally written by George Harrison as a social satire, it was later, to George's shock, used as an anti-police theme song. It was also linked to the Charles Manson murders where the words "pig" and "piggy" were written in blood.
"Have you seen the little piggies crawling in the dirt, and for all the little piggies, life is getting worse. Always having dirt to play around in, have you seen the bigger piggies, in their starched white shirts."
8. Who was Rocky's rival in "Rocky Raccoon"?

Answer: Dan

This was Paul McCartney's tribute to country-western music and based on a real life experience that he had with a doctor that had been drinking.
"His rival it seems, had broken his dreams, by stealing the girl of his fancy.
Her name was Magill, and she called herself Lil, but everyone knew her as Nancy. Now she and her man, who called himself Dan, were in the next room at the hoe-down. Rocky burst in, and grinning a grin, he said Danny boy this is a show down."
9. What unfortunate event had happened to the singer's girlfriend in "Don't Pass Me By"?

Answer: Car crash

Ringo Starr had written this song in 1964, but the Beatles did not get around to recording it until 1968.
"You'll never know it hurt me so, how I hate to see you go, don't pass my by, don't make me cry. I'm sorry that I doubted you, I was so unfair, you were in a car crash, and you lost your hair."
10. In the song "Julia", how were her eyes described?

Answer: Seashells

John Lennon wrote this song as a tribute to his mother, Julia Lennon, and to Yoko Ono. "Yoko", translated into English, means "ocean child".
"Julia, Julia, ocean child calls me, so I sing a song of love, Julia.
Julia, seashell eyes, windy smile calls me, so I sing a song of love, Julia."
