Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Beatles had the top five songs for much of the beginning of 1964. What artist or group knocked the Beatles "She Loves You" out of Number One May 1964?

Answer: Louis Armstrong

The Song was "Hello Dolly" which was also a Broadway Musical at the time. Sixties AM radio was nowhere near as compartmentalized as FM is now...They would play Tony Bennet, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Wilson Pickett, Motown and even the Singing Nun all in the same hour.
2. Car songs were very big in the '60's. What was the name of the group that had a hit with "Hey Little Cobra" in 1964?

Answer: The Rip Chords

This was the first single I ever bought. They didn't have any other hits (at least not in New York) as far as I know.
3. Acts got wilder and crazier as the decade went on. Who was known for performing his hit, "FIRE" while being lowered on stage in a flaming headdress?

Answer: Arthur Brown

The act was know as "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown". A true forerunner of glam rock, shock rock, etc.
4. Which "numerical" group had a hit with the song, "Concrete and Clay"?

Answer: Unit 4 plus Two

A British Group, this was their only American hit as far as I know.
5. The American Group, The Shadows of Knight had a big hit in 1966 with "Gloria" but which group first released a version of the song in England in 1965?

Answer: Them

The ;ead singer of Them was Van Morrison. Them was (were?) a much better group than the Shadows of Knight though they did similar styles of music.
6. Gary Lewis, son of Jerry had a hit called "This Diamond Ring". It was written by this future Bob Dylan sideman (in the studio).

Answer: Al Kooper

Gary Lewis played the drums. Al Kooper went on to found Blood, Sweat and Tears.
7. Group members often had weird names. "Banana" was the lead guitarist for which group?

Answer: The Youngbloods

The Youngbloods had a big hit with "Get Together". Their lead singer, Jesse Colin Young, had a career as a solo artist after the group split up. (Ha,ha, Banana Split!)
8. There were many cheesy "pyschodelic" singles in the late sixties. Which group had a hit with "Green Tambourine"?

Answer: The Lemon Pipers

Well, this one was pretty cheesy. Especially the echo...echo...echo...when they sang "listen while I play (play) (play)...My Green Tambourine...
9. The lead singer of which group wrote the song "Dandy" that was a hit for Herman's Hermits in the US?

Answer: The Kinks

Namely Ray Davies, one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th Century...In addition to "You Really Got Me.." he wrote "Well Respected Man", "Waterloo Sunset" and many more. Many peopel only know the Kinks only for "You Really Got Me" ...check out their later stuff.
10. Easy as 1, 2, 3 -- the song 1, 2, 3 was a hit for ...

Answer: Len Barry

Not to be confused with ABC. That was a little later. They played this at "record hops" in 1965.
