Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song was Simon and Garfunkel's first number one single in the United States?

Answer: The Sound of Silence

The released single had been remixed, with drums, bass, and electric guitar added to the original recording.
2. The song 'The Boxer' begins with the lyrics, 'I am just a poor boy. Though my story's seldom told.' What has Paul Simon said this song is about?

Answer: Himself

In an interview in 'Playboy' Simon said, 'I think the song is about me. Everybody's beating me up, and I'm telling you now I'm going to go away if you don't stop.'
3. What was the original name used in what became the song 'Mrs. Robinson'?

Answer: Mrs. Roosevelt

Apparently, Simon originally named the song after Eleanor Roosevelt.
4. What group's cover of Simon and Garfunkel's 'A Hazy Shade of Winter' appeared in the film 'Less Than Zero'?

Answer: Bangles

I don't know why, but in the cover by the Bangles the 'A' was dropped from the title and the song was just called 'Hazy Shade of Winter.'
5. What Simon and Garfunkel song was released on solo albums by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel but not on a Simon and Garfunkel album?

Answer: My Little Town

'My Little Town' was recorded in 1975 and, at Art's suggestion, appeared on both Simon's 'Still Crazy After All These Years' and Garfunkel's 'Breakaway.' 'Gone At Last' is also from 'Still Crazy After All These Years.' 'All I Know' is from Garfunkel's first solo album 'Angel Claire.' 'The Only Living Boy in New York' is from Simon and Garfunkel's last studio album 'Bridge Over Troubled Water.'
6. What did Simon and Garfunkel call themselves when they recorded and released the song 'Hey, Schoolgirl' in 1957?

Answer: Tom and Jerry

'Hey, Schoolgirl' was a top fifty hit, and Tom and Jerry played it on 'American Bandstand.'
7. The main track for 'Cecilia' was recorded in a jam session at a rented house in Los Angeles on Blue Jay Way. Which member of The Beatles previously lived in this house?

Answer: George Harrison

Garfunkel called this song 'great fun and games.' Harrison also rented this house, and, while he was there, he wrote the song 'Blue Jay Way,' which appears on the 'Magical Mystery Tour' album.
8. True or False: 'El Condor Pasa (If I Could)' was based on an Andean folk song.

Answer: True

Simon heard the song performed by a Peruvian band called Los Incas. He later wrote new words for the song and invited Los Incas to record it with Simon and Garfunkel for the album 'Bridge Over Troubled Water.'
9. 'He Was My Brother' was written in memory of whom?

Answer: A college classmate of Paul's

Paul Simon wrote this very moving song for Andrew Goodman, one of three civil rights activists killed by the Ku Klux Klan in Mississippi in 1964. Simon and Goodman both attended Queens College.
10. Writing on subway walls has been a recurring theme for Simon and Garfunkel. In addition to the song 'A Poem On The Underground Wall,' which of the following Simon and Garfunkel songs contains a line about this theme?

Answer: The Sound of Silence

The lyric from 'The Sound of Silence' is 'And the signs said, 'The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls.'' Apparently words on a subway wall caused some problems in the photo shoot for the cover of Simon and Garfunkel's album 'Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.' After about 500 pictures were taken and the shoot was closed down, Art Garfunkel discovered some foul language written very clearly on the wall that was behind him and Paul in the pictures. Needless to say, those pictures weren't used for the album cover.
