Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1973, country rock band, New Riders Of The Purple Sage told us about Red from which country?

Answer: Panama

Although the song could be about a person known as Panama Red, it is commonly believed to be about a strain of marijuana and the lyrics would certainly seem to bear that out. The track from the 1973 album, "The Adventures Of Panama Red" was released as a single, but along with most of the band's output during their 50 year history, failed to chart, although it can be heard fairly often on FM radio stations.
2. What did Tommy James and the Shondells mix with clover in 1968 for a Billboard Hot 100 chart topper?

Answer: Crimson

"Crimson And Clover from the album of the same name was the band's second American number one, after "Hanky Panky" in 1966. They also scored a UK number one in 1968 with "Mony Mony", which reached number three in USA. "Crimson And Clover" has been covered by artists as diverse as Prince and Dolly Parton, with the best known probably being Joan Jett's version in 1982 which top ten in USA, Canada and Australia but only limped to number 60 in UK>
3. Which artist included the track "Red Sails" on his 1979 album, "Lodger"?

Answer: David Bowie

"Lodger" was Bowie's predecessor to the very successful "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)" album of 1980. "Lodger" was the final album in his 'Berlin' phase, where he was heavily influenced by German music of the time, as evidenced by the two previous albums, "Low" and "Heroes" (both 1977).

The track "Red Sails" drew heavily on the music of German band Neu! and even more so on the track "Monza (Rauf Und Runter" by Harmonia.
4. Which Australian artist did the original version of "Red Right Hand" in 1994?

Answer: Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds

"Red Right Hand" was a track from Cave's 1994 album, "Let Love In" and takes its inspiration from John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost" (1667). One of the best cover versions of this track was by Sheffield band, Arctic Monkeys, who transformed it from a brooding, almost creepy song into an out and out rock track.
5. At the 1996 VH1 Honors, Peter Gabriel performed his hit "Red Rain" (1987) with Michael Stipe of R.E.M. and which female vocalist?

Answer: Natalie Merchant (10,000 Maniacs)

Red Rain is a scientific phenomenon, also known as blood rain, believed to be caused by aerial spores of algae, but Gabriel's track dealt with nothing so profound. As he told "Mojo" magazine, it was inspired by a dream he had about swimming in a sea of red water, and this is borne out by the lyrics, "I am standing up at the water's edge in my dream" and "I'm bathing in. Red rain coming down."
6. "Red House" was a track on the UK version of "Are You Experienced", the debut album of which musical genius?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

"Red House" was left off American pressings of "Are You Experienced" to allow room for songs that had been released as singles in USA. It was finally included on the USA pressing of "Smash Hits" (1969), although a stereo recording of the track was used, rather than the original mono version. "Red House" has been included on many posthumous live Hendrix albums, my personal favourite being the recording from 1970 at New York Pop on Randall's Island.
7. Which duo reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 2003 with "Red Dirt Road"?

Answer: Brooks And Dunn

Taken from the 2003 album of the same name, "Red Dirt Road" gave the boys their 18th number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in USA, but strangely, it failed to chart at all in Canada. The lyrics tell of living "of Rural Route 3", a place where, "I drank my first beer.

It's where I found Jesus. Where I wrecked my first car" but most importantly, "That's where I first saw Mary. On that roadside picking blackberries".
8. In 2013, Keith Urban was, "Staring at your legs on the leather of my _____". What was the car, and the title of the song?

Answer: Red Camaro

All are songs about cars, but "Little Red Corvette" (1982) was by Prince and "Red Barchetta" was by Rush in 1981. "Red Cortina" was a 1991 track by Irish band, Saw Doctors, leaving us Keith Urban's "Red Camaro", taken from his hit album, "Fuse" (2013). The Chevy Camaro was produced between 1966 and 2002, before being reintroduced in 2010 and winning World Car Design of the Year.
9. In 1984, Nena found great success with "99 Red Balloons", but what colour were the balloons in the original German version of the record?

Answer: Colour Is Not Mentioned

In the original German version, the title was "99 Luftballons" and the colour is not mentioned at all. The English translation not only added the colour, but also lines such as "Panic bells, it's red alert", which doesn't appear in the original.
The original song was written by guitarist Carlo Karges, who while attending a Rolling Stones concert in West Berlin, at which hundreds of helium-filled balloons were released, wondered what would happen if they floated over the then still standing Berlin Wall into East Berlin.
Although the English version provided Nena with an international hit, she has never, between 1984 and 2019 sung it live, preferring instead to sing the original version.
10. "Red Light", a track from "War" (1983) by U2, saw the Irish rockers joined by the Coconuts, backing band and trumpet player of which artist?

Answer: Kid Creole

Disco star, Kid Creole was touring Ireland while U2 were recording "War" and the band asked to borrow trumpet player, Kenny Fradley for the track, "Red Light". Fradley arrived at the studio, accompanied by Cheryl Poirier, Adriana Kaegi, Taryn Hagey and Jessica Felton from Kid Creole's backing band, the Coconuts, so U2 decided to use their talents as well, with the ladies eventually providing backing vocals on three tracks on the album.
