Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Light My Fire" was the first song ever written by which Doors guitarist?

Answer: Robby Krieger

Robby Krieger, reports Rolling Stone magazine, was the primary author of the song, but additional lyrics were added by frontman Jim Morrison and musical arrangements by the rest of the band, so the entire band is credited with authorship of the song. Kreiger would go on to co-write other Doors hits, including "Love Me Two Times" and "Love Her Madly."
2. Which Doors keyboardist had his solo cut from the "Light My Fire" single?

Answer: Ray Manzarek

The song was cut down to approximately three minutes for the single. It ran approximately seven minutes on the LP. Robby Krieger also had his guitar solo cut from the single. Manzarek played a Vox Continental organ and piano bass on the song.
3. "Light My Fire" was recorded on which Doors album?

Answer: The Doors

"Goodbye" is a 1969 Cream album. "L.A. Woman" was released in 1971 and "Strange Days" in 1967. "Light My Fire" was recorded on the self-titled "The Doors," the band's debut album, recorded at Sunset Studios in 1966 and released in January of 1967. The album is typically classified as "psychedelic rock" or "art rock."
4. What Puerto Rican singer brought a cover version of "Light My Fire" to number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1968?

Answer: José Feliciano

José Feliciano's cover appeared on his self-titled album "Feliciano!" and the single of "Light My Fire" was released with a cover of "California Dreaming" on the B-Side. The popularity of his cover caused the Doors version of the song to re-enter the charts. Feliciano's version hit number one on the singles charts in Canada and Australia, where it was a bigger hit even than the Doors' version.
5. The author of "Light My Fire" said he was inspired by the lyrics of "Play with Fire" by what English rock band?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

Marc Meyers, in his 2016 book "Anatomy of a Song," writes that in addition to being influenced by the Rolling Stones' lyrics, Krieger was inspired by the melody of "Hey Joe," a 1960s rock standard of contested authorship. The Stones' song, released in 1965, contains the chorus: "So don't play with me, 'cause you're playing with fire."
6. When the Doors performed "Light My Fire" on "The Ed Sullivan Show", they were asked to change the lyric "Girl, we couldn't get much higher" to what?

Answer: Girl, we couldn't get much better

There was concern that the lyric was a reference to drugs, and so they were asked to change it to "Girl, we couldn't get much better." The band agreed, but during the actual performance, Jim Morrison famously sung the original lyric. The band was then told they would never perform on the show again.

This story is recounted in Chris Charlesworth's 1994 book "The Complete Guide to the Doors."
7. "You know that it would be untrue / You know that I would be a _____" what?

Answer: liar

"You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher
Come on, baby, light my fire
Come on, baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire."

American disco soul singer Amii Stewart released a disco version of this song in 1979. It hit number five on the singles chart in the UK, though it only peaked at number 69 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
8. "The time to hesitate is through / No time to wallow in the _____" what?

Answer: mire

Larry Knechtel contributed to "Light My Fire" by playing bass guitar.

The Doors album "Alive, She Cried," which was released in 1983, contains a live version of this song. The single of "Light My Fire" was certified gold by RIAA, with over one million copies sold.
9. "Try now we can only lose / And our love become a _____" what?

Answer: funeral pyre

"The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre."

Released in June of 1967 by Elektra, the "Light My Fire" single spent 17 weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at number one. "Light My Fire" was ranked number 52 on RIAA's "Songs of the Century" list.
10. What winner of the British TV series "Pop Idol" released a cover of "Light My Fire" in 2002 that peaked at number one on the UK singles chart?

Answer: Will Young

Will Young's cover was in the same style as José Feliciano, and it was released from his album "From Now On." The single contained "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Beyond the Sun" on the B-side. The song also peaked at number one on Scotland's OCC Singles chart and made the top ten in Italy and the Eurochart Hot 100.
