Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which UK Beatles' album did "Love Me Do" first appear on?

Answer: Please Please Me

On the original pressing of "Love Me Do" the song writing was credited to McCartney/Lennon. It peaked at number 17 on the UK Singles Chart for The Beatles in 1962. It was number one for one week on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964.

The first pressing of the UK single had Ringo on drums, the second pressing of the single had Andy White on drums and Ringo on tambourine. The second version was used on The Beatles' first UK album "Please Please Me" and for the single released in the USA. There is a third version, which has Pete Best on drums and was recorded before the other two versions but not released until 1995 on The Beatles' double album "Anthology 1".

On its 20th anniversary in 1982 "Love Me Do" re-entered the UK Singles Chart and peaked at number four. On the 30th anniversary in 1992 it peaked at number 53. On the 50th anniversary in 2012 a limited-edition of the original single was scheduled for release but was recalled when it was realised that the pressings were the Andy White version and the correct version with Ringo on drums was released. The Andy White pressings were ordered to be destroyed but some might still exist and might be worth a penny or two.

The Beatles were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

2. Who had a number one hit in 1964 with "The House Of The Rising Sun"?

Answer: The Animals

"The House Of The Rising Sun" is a traditional song and it's origins are unknown. It was number one for one week on the UK Singles Chart for The Animals in 1964, (Columbia DB 7301, 4:29). It was number one for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year (MGM 13264, 2:58).

"The House Of The Rising Sun" was recorded in one take and it was The Animals' only UK & US number one hit. Alan Price was the only member of The Animals named on the record so the arranging credit went to him as did the songwriting royalties. This rankled with the rest of the group ever after. Price left the group in 1965 due to personal and musical differences, his fear of flying was one of the reasons he left.

The Animals were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Answer: Today

Randy Sparks is an American singer/song writer. He had a solo career and was also a member of The Randy Sparks Trio and The New Christy Minstrels. "Today" became a hit and a folk song favorite when peaking at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 for The New Christy Minstrels in 1964.

"This Land is Your Land" was written by Woody Guthrie.
"Rocky Mountain High" was written by John Denver and Mike Taylor.
"Green, Green" was written by Randy Sparks and Barry McGuire.

It's difficult to pick a favorite song but I choose this one as it was one of my Mother's favorites. As a single mother of 5 and a volunteer on the Girl's Club summer camp bus with 50 or so young girls, we would sometimes get on her nerves! When we realized she was really getting angry we would begin to sing this song in harmony and it would calm her right down. As adults my sisters and I would still sing it for her.

8. "Ticket To Ride" was the A-Side of this Beatles' record but I like the B-Side more. What was the title of the B-Side in the UK?

Answer: Yes It Is

"Yes it is" was the UK B-Side of "Ticket To Ride" by The Beatles, it was written by John Lennon and features his distinctive voice.

It took 5 hours and 14 takes to perfect this recording on 16 February 1965. I like it despite its somewhat insensitive lyrics, (what girl wants to know her boyfriend is still obsessed with his ex?). The music reflects the emotion of the lyrics, quiet when the singer is reminiscing and becoming more intense when he sings in anguish "Yes it is, yes it is, oh yes it is!"

That's clever and something other singers and arrangers could learn. There's also something about the three rising notes after the first line and repeated, which gives it a certain resonance

Music critic and author Ian MacDonald said, "Yes It Is" was psychologically deeper than any song The Beatles had ever recorded before" I absolutely agree.
