1. The very first Deep Purple album, released in 1968, was called "Shades of Deep Purple". Which song, written by Joe South, appeared on the album, and was still being played live by the band in the 21st century?

Answer: Hush

"Shades of Deep Purple" was recorded by the band's original line-up of Rod Evans (vocals), Nick Simper (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) and Ian Paice (drums). "Hush" was originally recorded by Billy Joe Royal in 1967; the Deep Purple version was released as a single in the USA, and made it to number four on the Billboard chart.
2. The band released a second album in 1968, "The Book of Taliesyn". Tracks included "Kentucky Woman", which was originally written and recorded by which artist?

Answer: Neil Diamond

"Kentucky Woman" reached number 22 in the USA for Neil Diamond, and number 38 for Deep Purple. Other covers on the album included The Beatles' "We Can Work it Out" and the Ike and Tina Turner hit "River Deep Mountain High".
3. In 1969, the original line-up of Deep Purple released their last album together, entitled simply "Deep Purple". The album consisted mainly of group-composed tracks, the only cover song being "Lalena", written and recorded by which UK artist?

Answer: Donovan

Donovan released "Lalena" as a single in 1968; it reached number 33 in the USA but failed to chart in the UK. Deep Purple didn't release any singles from this album, which sold poorly compared to its two predecessors.
4. The first Deep Purple album to feature the classic MK II line-up was the 1970 release "In Rock". Which anti-war song is the longest track on the album, clocking in at over ten minutes?

Answer: Child in Time

Rod Evans and Nick Simper had left the band by this time to be replaced by Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (bass). "In Rock" saw the band evolve into a hard rock unit, with tracks such as "Speed King" and "Child in Time" appearing in their live sets for years to come.
5. Deep Purple hit the top of the UK album charts in 1971 with their fifth studio album, "Fireball". Which track became a regular part of their live shows, usually being used to showcase an Ian Paice drum solo?

Answer: The Mule

There was a slightly different track listing on the UK and US versions of the album. "Strange Kind of Woman" was released as a UK single, but left off the album, being replaced with "Demon's Eye".
6. In 1972, Deep Purple released "Machine Head". Which track on the album told the story of what happened whilst they were recording the album in Switzerland?

Answer: Smoke on the Water

The band had planned to record the album at Montreux Casino, but their plans were sent into disarray when, during a Frank Zappa concert, a fan fired a flare into the roof, burning it down. "Smoke on the Water" told the story of how the band then made the album at the Grand Hotel, using the Rolling Stones' mobile studio.
7. The seventh Deep Purple studio album, "Who Do We Think We Are", was released in 1973, and was the last for eleven years to feature the MK II line-up. What was the title of the opening track on the album, which went on to become a part of their live shows for years to come?

"Stormbringer" was the last Deep Purple album to feature Ritchie Blackmore on lead guitar for a decade. The cover features Pegasus, the winged horse from Greek mythology, flying over a tornado.
10. The 1975 release, "Come Taste the Band", was the only Deep Purple studio album to feature which guitarist?

Answer: Tommy Bolin

Bolin was brought in in 1975 to replace Ritchie Blackmore, who had left to form Rainbow. He sadly died from a drugs overdose the following year. Answer: Knocking at Your Back Door

"Perfect Strangers" made the top five in the UK album charts. "Knocking at Your Back Door" was released as a single and reached number seven on the US mainstream rock chart.
12. What was the title of the follow-up album to "Perfect Strangers", released in 1987?

Answer: The House of Blue Light

"The House of Blue Light" was generally regarded as a disappointment by fans and critics alike, and only just crept into the UK top ten. "Call of the Wild" was released as a single but failed to capture the public's imagination.
13. Which singer made his only appearance with Deep Purple on the 1990 album "Slaves and Masters"?

Answer: Joe Lynn Turner

Ian Gillan had departed the band after falling out with Ritchie Blackmore in 1989, and former Rainbow singer Turner was brought in as his replacement. This particular Deep Purple line-up only made one album together, "Slaves and Masters". The album was a commercial failure and Turner was fired after the ensuing tour.
14. Ian Gillan was back (again) for the 1993 album "The Battle Rages On". Which track, the longest on the album, features the lyrics "Your jewel flashing, across the dark, forbidding distance, I love your gypsy heart"?

Answer: Anya

This would prove to be the last album recorded by the MK II line-up, as Blackmore departed the band midway through the subsequent tour. The artwork for the album's sleeve features two fighting dragons - meant to represent Blackmore and Gillan perhaps?
15. Which guitarist replaced Ritchie Blackmore on the 1996 album "Purpendicular"?

Answer: Steve Morse

Morse had been a member of several outfits including Dixie Dregs and Kansas. "Purpendicular" didn't sell well, despite including tracks such as "Ted the Mechanic" and "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming" which would go on to become live favourites.
16. Released in 1998, "Abandon" was Deep Purple's sixteenth studio album. Which track on the album was a reworking of one of their 1970s songs?

Answer: Bludsucker

"Bludsucker" was a reworking of the 1970 track "Bloodsucker", which had appeared on the 1970 album "In Rock". "Abandon" was the last Deep Purple studio album to feature founder member Jon Lord on keyboards.
17. After "Abandon", there was a five year hiatus before the next studio album from Deep Purple. What was the "fruity" title of this album?

Answer: Bananas

"Bananas" was the first Deep Purple album to feature Don Airey on keyboards. The album also featured a female backing singer, Beth Hart, on the track "Haunted".
18. "Rapture of the Deep", released in 2005, was the 18th Deep Purple studio album. Which track, that closes out the album, includes the lyrics "Every day of my life I discover, someone murdering my sisters and brothers"?

Answer: Before Time Began

"Rapture of the Deep" was well received by both critics and die-hard Purple fans, but only reached number 81 on the UK album chart, whilst failing to make a dent on the Billboard chart.
19. Deep Purple have recorded two classical/rock albums with a full orchestra, in 1969 and 2000. At which famous London venue did both of these concerts take place?

Answer: Royal Albert Hall

"Concerto for Group and Orchestra" was released in 1969 by the MK II line-up, alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, who were conducted by Malcolm Arnold. Arnold's "Symphony No.6" was performed, alongside tracks from their first three studio albums, plus "Child in Time" from the yet to be released "In Rock". "Live at the Royal Albert Hall" was recorded alongside the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Paul Mann.

As well as the classical tracks, songs performed included "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming" and "Smoke on the Water". Guest singers included Ronnie James Dio, Sam Brown and Miller Anderson.
20. Deep Purple have released numerous live albums throughout their career; which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: Live After Death

"Made in Japan", probably their most famous live album, was recorded in 1972, and contains lengthy versions of songs such as "Child in Time", "Lazy" and "Space Truckin'". "Nobody's Perfect" was recorded during the "House of Blue Light" tour of 1987, with an 11-minute version of "Knocking at Your Back Door" being a highlight. "Come Hell or High Water" was recorded in 1993, and is notable as the last Deep Purple release to feature Ritchie Blackmore.
