Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1965 The Turtles' rendition of this Bob Dylan tune became the group's first top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Which of the following is the correct answer?

Answer: It Ain't Me Babe

"It Ain't Me Babe" is the final track on Dylan's fourth studio album "Another Side of Bob Dylan", which was released in 1964. Like most of Dylan's recordings at the time, "It Ain't Me Babe" was a slower-paced song featuring Dylan's vocals, accompanied by an acoustic guitar and a harmonica.

When The Turtles' lead singer Howard Kaylan first heard the track he felt it would make a great rock song. As it turns out his instincts were correct. "It Ain't Me Babe" entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 76 in August of 1965, eventually peaking at number eight.
2. The American rock band The Outsiders had some moderate success in the U.S. in the mid '60s, but only one of their songs managed to crack the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. What's the name of this hit from 1966?

Answer: Time Won't Let Me

"Time Won't Let Me" was easily the band's biggest hit, peaking at number five in April of 1966. The group released three more singles that year, all of which reached the top 40, but subsequent releases failed to chart and they disbanded in 1970. Following the break-up, lead singer Sonny Geraci formed a new band in Los Angeles, California that initially was also called The Outsiders, but shortly thereafter changed the name to Climax.

The band struggled early on, releasing three unsuccessful singles, but on their fourth try they had a huge it with "Precious and Few", which reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1972.
3. This hit single from 1963 by The Ronettes was one of the first recordings to feature Phil Spector's innovative "Wall of Sound" production technique. Please name this tune.

Answer: Be My Baby

"Be My Baby" was the group's only top ten hit, reaching number two in October of 1963. The Ronettes consisted of Veronica "Ronnie" Bennett, her older sister Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley, but on this particular recording Ronnie was the only member to perform.

The "Wall of Sound" was a technique developed by Spector which utilized orchestral instruments, such as strings, woodwinds and brass, giving the recording a fuller and richer sound. Many of the musicians who played on the song were members of "The Wrecking Crew", a group of session players who appeared on thousands of studio recordings during the '60s and early '70s.
4. There were multiple songs from the rock musical "Hair" that appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969, yet only one reached the top spot. Which song accomplished this feat?

Answer: Aquarius/ Let the Sunshine In

"Hair" opened on Broadway on April 29, 1968, and after 1,750 performances closed on July 1, 1972. With lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot, songs from the musical were all over the Billboard charts in 1969. "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" was The 5th Dimension's biggest selling single, spending six weeks at number one in the spring of 1969.

The three other songs mentioned, "Hair" by The Cowsills, "Good Morning Starshine" by Oliver and "Easy to Be Hard" by Three Dog Night, were all top five hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
5. Which John Lennon/Paul McCartney composition did British duo Peter and Gordon take to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964?

Answer: A World Without Love

Although "A World Without Love" was attributed to Lennon/McCartney, the song was written entirely by McCartney. Feeling the song wasn't right for The Beatles, McCartney offered the song to Peter Asher and his partner Gordon Waller, whom he had met through his then girlfriend Jane Asher.

The song went on to become Peter and Gordon's biggest hit, reaching number one in the summer of 1964. "A World Without Love" was the first of two Lennon/McCartney songs to top the Billboard Hot 100 by an artist other than The Beatles.

The second was Elton John's version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", which reached number one in 1975.
6. Mason Williams is probably best known for this instrumental piece that reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968. What's the name of this high octane number?

Answer: Classical Gas

The song was originally titled "Classical Gasoline", but during the recording session "Gasoline" was inadvertently changed to "Gas" by a music copyist and the name stuck. "Classical Gas" peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in August of 1968, spending two weeks at that position.

It also spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard Easy Listening chart. Williams wasn't just a one-trick pony, he was also the head writer on "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" and first performed the song on the show.

The song won three Grammys in 1968, and Williams also won an Emmy the same year for writing.
7. This Neil Diamond-penned tune was The Monkees' second consecutive number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and the biggest selling single of 1967. Please name this song.

Answer: I'm a Believer

"I'm a Believer" reached number one the last week of December, 1966 and stayed there for seven weeks, finally getting knocked out of the top spot by The Buckinghams' "Kind of a Drag" in February of 1967. The song was released as the follow-up to the band's first number one "Last Train to Clarksville", and it was an instant success. "I'm a Believer" not only reached number one in the US, it topped the charts in 11 other countries, including the UK. Since its release the single has sold more than ten million physical copies worldwide.
8. This smash hit by The Rascals seemed to have a liberating effect on people in the summer of 1968. Which song is it?

Answer: People Got to Be Free

"People Got to Be Free" was The Rascals' third and final number one, spending five weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968. Written by band members Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati the songs message of peace and tolerance seemed to resonate with people in a year that saw the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy.
9. Which Billboard Hot 100 chart topper from 1964 had The Supremes "burning" and "yearning"?

Answer: Where Did Our Love Go

"Where Did Our Love Go", written by the prolific songwriting team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland, was the first of five consecutive singles by The Supremes to reach number one. The trio had a total of 12 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 in the '60s and early '70s, making them one of most successful musical groups of all-time.

The song has been covered a number of times, including a fairly well known version by the English pop duo Soft Cell in early 1982.
10. In 1968 The Bee Gees released this song about a prison inmate on death row who has only hours to live. It was the first single by the band to reach the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. Would you please name this tune?

Answer: I've Gotta Get a Message to You

"I've Gotta Get a Message to You" was the group's second number one on the UK Singles Chart and up to that point, was their highest charting single in the US, peaking at number eight in October of 1968. The Bee Gees found success during the '60s and early '70s, placing nine singles inside the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, including "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", which was their first number one.

While most of their previous hits had been ballads, when disco reared its ugly head in the mid '70s the brothers began writing and recording more dance-oriented songs, and that was a pretty good move. Between 1975 and 1979, The Bee Gees had ten top ten singles on the Billboard hot 100, with eight of those reaching number one.
