Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What unusual instrument does Zappa use in the orchestration for many of this album's songs?

Answer: Kazoo

The slightly out-of-tune kazoos heighten the strangeness of all these songs.
2. On "Hungry Freaks, Daddy" the vocalists speak/sing the lyrics. Which of the following terms best describes this technique?

Answer: Sprechstimme

Sprechstimme (German for speak/sing) was first used as a musical technique by the early 20th century group of Viennese composers, specifically Schoenberg, Webern and Berg. Zappa was particularly fond of Webern's music.
3. What is the time signature of "Who Are The Brain Police?"?

Answer: 3/4

On this first Zappa album, one can hear how often Zappa wrote in "Waltz Time." This bizarre song is one of many with this lilting musical meter.
4. Which track features nifty finger-snapping and a cool little xylophone ditty in its introduction?

Answer: Wowie Zowie

Most likely it was Gene Estes playing this difficult xylophone part. Zappa rounded up the best studio players in L.A. for his "Mothers Auxiliary."
5. Which two tracks feature guitar solos?

Answer: "Hungry Freaks, Daddy" and "Trouble Every Day"

Zappa, of course, was a fantastic guitarist from the start. These two solos are carefully crafted and literally jump out of the speakers with gutsy, bluesy authority.
6. Which of the following is NOT heard on "The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet"?

Answer: Violin

This bizarre 12-minute jam prominently features Timpani, Theremin and the inside-the-piano plucking.
7. Which of the following places is NOT mentioned in "It Can't Happen Here"?

Answer: Chicago

Each place-name is preceded by the phrase: "Who could imagine ... that they would freak out in ..."
8. Many of the songs on "Freak Out!" were re-recorded a few years later on "Cruising With Ruben & The Jets." Which of the following songs do NOT also appear on "Cruising"?

Answer: Wowie Zowie

The fourth song on both albums is "Anyway the Wind Blows."
9. Finish these lyrics from "Trouble Every Day." "Well, I seen the fires burnin' / And the local people turnin' / On the merchants and the shops /...."

Answer: Who used to sell their brooms and mops

"Trouble" is about the Watts Riot in August of 1965.
10. In the liner notes, Frank dedicated "Help, I'm a Rock" to whom?

Answer: Elvis Presley

"Freak Out!" was only the second double-album ever released (Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde" beat him by a few weeks!). The liner notes and photographs inside the gatefold are very groovy. Frank included a long list of people he wanted to thank, under the heading: "These People Have Contributed Materially in Many Ways to Make Our Music What it is. Please Do Not Hold it Against Them."
