Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the first track, "Are You Hung Up?" Gary Kellgren, the engineer, whispers his threats to erase all the Frank Zappa masters. He says they will be:

Answer: Blank ... Empty ... Space

Zappa immediately throws the listener into his world of "anything-is-sound-is-music." The creepy whispering is accompanied by other bizarre sound-music, all leading into the first actual song, "Who Needs The Peace Corps?".
2. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the lyrics to "Who Needs The Peace Corps?"?

Answer: Golden Gate Park

Zappa skewers the Hippy Scene during the 1967 "Summer of Love" with perfect aim!
3. According to Zappa, the songwriter, "What's the Ugliest Part of Your Body?"?

Answer: Your mind

The "B" section ("All your children are poor unfortunate victims ...") is in a very nasty 7/8 time!
4. "The first word of this song is 'discorporate.' It means to leave your body." What song is this from?

Answer: Absolutely Free

Another example of Zappa's "conceptual continuity." Although, musically and lyrically, they have nothing to do with each other, the song title is identical to the title of FZ's previous album.
5. Halfway through "Nasal Retentive Calliope Music," someone says, "Beautiful! God! It's God! I see God!" Who is it?

Answer: Eric Clapton

Clapton also appears on the first track, "Are You Hung Up?".
6. What do the father and mother in the "Idiot Bastard Son" do?

Answer: Congressman and Hooker

"The father's a Nazi in Congress today / The mother's a hooker somewhere in L.A."
7. This eerie song seems to predict the Kent State massacre:

Answer: Mom & Dad

One of Zappa's most heartbreaking songs. "Your child was killed in the park today / Shot by the cops as she quietly lay".
8. "Mother People" opens with which sound?

Answer: snorking

Zappa's road manager, Dick Barber, was an expert "snorker" and FZ -- who adored the sound of it -- recruited him frequently.
9. The album is a parody of "Sgt. Pepper's." The final track, "The Chrome Plated Megaphone of Destiny" is itself a parody of The Beatles' "A Day in the Life." How does Zappa do this?

Answer: Instead of one chord held for a long time, he holds just one note for a long time

A subtle thing -- but a nice touch, with Zappa vigorously whipping that PAN button from left to right!
10. What did Zappa do to this album in 1985?

Answer: He re-recorded the bass and drum parts

Zappa claimed the bass and drum tracks had faded from the original master. Many of his fans were furious when he did this. Fortunately, he later put out the original mix, thereby invalidating his initial claim about the tapes!
