Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Now that your rose is in bloom A light hits the gloom on the grey" These are lyrics from which "rose-themed" song?

Answer: Kiss From a Rose

Although Seal wrote the song in 1987, he was not pleased with it and left it aside for several years, until he decided to release it in his 1994 second eponymous album. It was, also, released as a single with "The Wind Cries Mary" as its B-side.
Director Joel Schumacher used the song in his 1995 film "Batman Returns" with Val Kilmer and Nicole Kidman and the song appears in the "Batman Forever: Music from the Motion Picture" soundtrack.

Here is the rest of the verse:
"Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah
Now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey"

This '90s classic was written up by Tiye based on a recommendation from ClaudiaCat.
2. At the 1992 Grammy Awards, which track by Metallica lost in the "Best Rock Song" category to "The Soul Cages" by Sting?

Answer: Enter Sandman

Also nominated were "Can't Stop This Thing We Started" by Bryan Adams, "Learning To Fly" from Tom Petty, Queensryche's "Silent Lucidity" and "Been Caught Stealing" from Jane's Addiction. Sting's win didn't translate into sales as "The Soul Cages" reached number 57 in UK charts and didn't make the Billboard Hot 100 in USA. By contrast, "Enter Sandman" got to number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number five in UK.

This question was brought to completion by 480154st and the song was a request from Tazman6619.
3. Which 1970 song about Eric Clapton's unrequited love for the wife of a friend was remade in 1992 in an acoustic version, by which time Clapton had married and divorced her?

Answer: Layla

After leaving Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, Eric Clapton formed Derek and the Dominoes with Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon. Clapton was madly in love with Pattie Boyd, the wife of his friend George Harrison. Inspired by his deep emotion, and drawing on an ancient Persian love story called "Layla and Majnun", he wrote "Layla" with Gordon. Gordon's major contribution was a long piano solo at the end of the song, that Whitlock suggested had been stolen from Gordon's girlfriend, Rita Coolidge. Duane Allman, a kindred spirit of Clapton, produced a distinctive guitar riff. "Layla" was a hit single worldwide for Derek and the Dominoes. In 1992, Clapton recorded an acoustic version as part of the "MTV Unplugged" series, which became a solo hit single. Boyd divorced Harrison in 1977 and married Clapton in 1979, with Harrison in attendance. That marriage ended in 1989. Pattie Boyd was somewhat of a muse, inspiring Harrison to write "Something", "If I Needed Someone" and "For You Blue". Clapton also wrote "Wonderful Tonight" about the English model and photographer.

Alas! Another rock classic on the Setlist. Upstart3 wrote this question for it, but Ponycargirl asked for its inclusion.
4. "Don't need nobody just me and you..." Which song was a hit for British blues rock band Medicine Head in 1973?

Answer: One and One Is One

Medicine Head were a British blues rock group active in the 1970s, and "One and One Is One" was their biggest success. Released in 1973, the track reached number three on the UK Singles Chart and stayed on the chart for 13 weeks. While it did not make the track list of any of their studio albums, it did lend its title to a "Very Best Of Medicine Head" compilation album in 2009. As for the incorrect answers, all were also originally released in 1973: "Killing Me Softly" is by Roberta Flack, "No More Mr. Nice Guy" is by Alice Cooper, and "I'm Doin' Fine Now" is by New York City.

This was a Scotsbluebell request and the question was crafted by Daaanieeel.
5. Ultravox were a British new wave band from London formed in 1973. Their biggest hit came in 1981 with which song about a European city?

Answer: Vienna

The Ultravox sound was typical of the New Wave era: heavy synths and bass lines. "Vienna" hit number two on the UK Singles charts.

Thanks to 1nn1 for this question based on Lonely-Lady's suggestion for the setlist.
6. Which Stone Roses single takes its title from the words that Jesus spoke to Mary and Martha, sisters of Lazarus?

Answer: I Am the Resurrection

Stone Roses hit number 33 in UK charts in 1992 with this track which was voted the tenth best guitar track by "Q" magazine in 2005. The biblical line is from John 11:25-26 (KJV) and is spoken by Jesus as he raises Lazarus from the dead.

480154st brings this song back from the dead with this question based on a request from Upstart3!
7. Which single by Radiohead, from the album 'A Moon Shaped Pool', was accompanied by a video parodying the stop-motion animation series 'Trumpton'?

Answer: Burn the Witch

The video uses the same style as "Trumpton" and its sister series "Camberwick Green" and "Chigley", much to the ire of the family of "Trumpton" creator Gordon Murray, as they had not given permission. It is based on "The Wicker Man", although the inspector in the video escapes from the burning wicker man. According to Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, the song's lyrics were inspired by the British tabloid "The News of the World" publishing personal details of sex offenders.

No witch hunts, please! This question was written by Kankurette based on Kyleisalive's recommendation.
8. What 1967 Bob Dylan song, from his album "John Wesley Harding", was actually made more famous by Jimi Hendrix?

Answer: All Along the Watchtower

Bob Dylan never released this song as a single; it was a simple folk ballad on guitar, bass drums, and harmonica. Jimi Hendrix literally electrified the song and made it a hit; it is strongly identified as a Hendrix song. Mr. Dylan performed it live for the first time in 1974, ironically with an arrangement closer to Hendrix's than his own composition. This song has been played live by Mr. Dylan on no less than 2,000 occasions.

This rock classic was brought to our setlist by Pollucci19 though 1nn1 was the one who built this question.
9. The first single to be lifted off the Editor's second album, "An End Has a Start", (2007) was which of the following?

Answer: Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors

The Editors combine a touch of hope with despair in the title of this track which takes a look at the horrors people can view on television and walk away with differing opinions. The track made its way into the Top Ten of the UK Singles charts and receiving mixed reviews from critics. These ranged from "audacious" to "Coldplay sound-a-likes."

Thanks to Tiye for the song request and Pollucci19 for crafting this question!
10. Co-written by Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller, which 1977 single by Elkie Brooks could so easily be mistaken as a lament to Janis Joplin?

Answer: Pearl's a Singer

Leiber & Stoller co-wrote the song with Ralph Dino and John Sembello, with the latter pair releasing it as a single under the name Dino & Sembello in 1974. When Leiber & Stoller were asked to produce the 1977 album "Two Days Away" for Elkie Brooks, the former lead singer for Vinegar Joe, they re-worked the lyrics to suit a female artist. The song, which is not a tale of Janis Joplin, (whose posthumously released best-selling 1971 album was called "Pearl"), tells the story of a singer who fails to reach the heights she aspires to. The ballad, released as a single, would be the first solo recording to chart for Brooks in the UK Singles charts in almost thirteen years. It would peak at number eight.

"Diamonds and Pearls" is a 1991 single by Prince & the New Power Generation, "Mama's Pearl" is a 1970 single from the Jackson Five and "Mother of Pearl" is a track from Roxy Music's 1973 album "Stranded".

We can look to Pollucci19 for writing this question and we would need to look to Parrarobbie for the suggestion.
