Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song, originally released in 1985 to provide famine relief, was remade in 2010 (its twenty-fifth anniversary) to support victims of an earthquake in Haiti?

Answer: We Are the World

Originally created by USA for Africa, a supergroup comprised of many major 1980s musicians and bands including Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, and Kenny Rogers (amongst dozens of others), "We Are the World" was an unsurprising hit, earning more than fifty million for famine relief through the song and related promotional materials. The single hit number one on many international charts and went platinum several times over. The remake, released in 2010, a year after Jackson's death, peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.

Dg_dave brings us this important song, known for its worldwide influence.
2. Which of these Blink-182 songs from their popular album "Enema of the State" didn't chart internationally?

Answer: Going Away to College

Blink-182's third album became a staple in the world of late-1990s/early-2000s punk rock and became a quick hit for teens everywhere with "What's My Age Again?" and "All the Small Things" being used in soundtracks for major gross-out comedies like "American Pie" and box office smashes like "Charlie's Angels" (which also popularized Destiny's Child's "Independent Women Pt. I"). "Going Away to College", along with other fan favourites like "Aliens Exist" and "The Party Song", appeared on this same album. They followed up with "Take Off Your Pants and Jacket" and their eponymous release, their fourth and fifth albums respectively, before a lengthy hiatus.

Guitargoddess brings us this blast from, relative to the other songs in the Setlist, the not-so-distant past.
3. Given the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1971, what single is often regarded as Simon & Garfunkel's signature hit?

Answer: Bridge Over Troubled Water

While many may regard "Sound of Silence" as another signature tune for the harmonizing duo, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" received much more acclaim critically, ultimately resulting in five Grammy Awards for Simon and Garfunkel, both for the song and their fifth album, also titled "Bridge Over Troubled Water". The song topped charts in the U.S. and Canada while peaking at number four on the UK Singles Chart. It was their final studio album together; both went solo in the years that followed.

To ease your mind, Rossian provided this classic.
4. Which of these singles from Irish rock band The Cranberries was released the latest?

Answer: Just My Imagination

The Cranberries found their popularity with their debut album, "Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?", which featured both "Dreams" and "Linger", while "Zombie", their highest-charting single internationally, showed on their sophomore release "No Need to Argue". "Just My Imagination", however, was the latest released as a single from their 1999 album "Bury the Hatchet", their lowest-charting release in their native Ireland.

This Irish single was brought into the FunTrivia Setlist by Zorba_Scank.
5. Which of these folk songs comes from Fleet Foxes' 2011 album "Helplessness Blues"?

Answer: Someone You'd Admire

"Helplessness Blues" ended up being quite renowned; many music outlets regarded it as one of the best albums of 2011. While the title track ended up becoming the top single from the album, the disc was consistent as a whole. The album was nominated for the first Grammy Award for Best Folk Album, but it was won by The Civil Wars. "Helplessness Blues" peaked at number four on the Billboard 200.

This critically-acclaimed folk offering came to us from Daaanieeel.
6. What Woody Guthrie folk ballad was written specifically about the American Dust Bowl?

Answer: Do Re Mi

While many of Guthrie's songs were political in nature (being written during the 1930s and 1940s), some, like "Do Re Mi", echoed the issues arising on the American home soil during the Great Depression and World War II. Appearing after its creation on his record "Dust Bowl Ballads", it was one of many songs that would lead to a widespread interest in folk music that would be felt well into the twenty-first century.

7. What metal/prog-rock song by thrash band Slayer was from their sophomore album, "Hell Awaits"?

Answer: At Dawn They Sleep

Sense a theme? Slayer wasn't really known for their restraint on such things; most of their works revolved around Hell and Satanic presence. "Hell Awaits", their second album, was well-received by fans of the genre upon its release in 1985. "At Dawn They Sleep" was one of the longer songs on the album, experimenting with a slower tempo than most. Many later metal bands have claimed it as an influence.

This instance of thrash metal comes from Anton.
8. "...and I'm on my way to believing." What down-tempo Paramore single was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 2011 Grammy Awards?

Answer: The Only Exception

Appearing on the band's third album, "The Only Exception" was a major hit for the alternative rockers, reaching number twenty-four on the Hot 100 and going platinum in the U.S. Their album, "Brand New Eyes", appeared on several year-end charts due to its critical acclaim and peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 200. Their next album went to number one.
The Grammy for Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals was discontinued in the same year Paramore was nominated, getting replaced by the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. They lost to Train's "Hey, Soul Sister".

No exceptions here; DarthRevan89 brought us this selection.
9. Australian band Skyhooks released a number of singles, but what was their first?

Answer: Living in the '70s

While "Living in the '70s" reached number eight in Australia, the album, also called "Living in the '70s" ended up showing lasting critical success, topping sales charts a year after release (in 1975) and being regarded as one of the country's top rock releases. The upbeat "Living in the '70s" was followed up by the single "Horror Movie" which did chart at number one on the ARIA Charts. Their last official album released in 1980.

Pollucci brings us this band from Australia in the 1970s.
10. What dance-pop song by La Roux was sung a capella by Anna Kendrick in the hit movie "Pitch Perfect"?

Answer: Bulletproof

La Roux's first international hit, "Bulletproof" hit the charts in 2009, taking over the pop airwaves to hit number one on the UK Singles Chart and number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. The English pair's eponymous album ended up winning Best Electronic/Dance Album at the Grammy Awards in the following year and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, losing to Speech Debelle's "Speech Therapy". The song ended up being mashed up with Ace of Base's "The Sign" in "Pitch Perfect" (2012).

Our last song of this installment comes from Malik24.
