Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The band was formed by two London girls, Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson. Berenyi and Anderson started loving music at a very young age and soon formed the band that was to be known as Lush. With which bands did the girls learn 'the ropes' of being part of a rock band?

Answer: The Bugs and The Rover Girls

Formed in the late 1980's, the two founding members of Lush, Miki and Emma, both spent time in other bands to learn how to be 'part of the band'. Berenyi spent time with The Bugs, while Anderson was in The Rover Girls.
2. It was the late '80s, and Berenyi and Anderson were still forming their band. This all changed when they met the other two members of Lush, Chris Acland and Steve Rippon. What instrument did Steve Rippon play?

Answer: Bass Guitar

It was not until Acland and Rippon were part of the band that Lush were ready to introduce themselves to the music industry.
3. When they had their band together, they had to set about making an album. They admitted that they started out by writing 'riot grrrl anthems', but in the end, it took Robin Guthrie. A member of another band, Robin helped Lush get their debut album, 'Spooky', together. What band was Robin from?

Answer: Cocteau Twins

Robin Guthrie also produced Lush's single 'Mad Love', which the songs 'Mad Love' and 'De-Luxe' were taken. Robin also helped to arrange the songs to be played by Lush on their 'Spooky' album.
4. Sadly, by the time 'Spooky' was released in 1992, Steve Rippon had fled the scene, and was replaced by Phil King. 'Spooky' broke the top ten, and was a smash hit on the 'indie' scene, but when they were included in their biggest concert to date, Lush essentially broke America. Which concert were Lush involved in to become so successful in America?

Answer: Lollapalooza II

'Spooky' sold upwards of 120,000 copies in America, and Berenyi claims they were 'just grateful not to get bottled off stage'. After this major concert, Lush went back to Wales to produce their next album, 'Split'.
5. As usual, Berenyi and Anderson were separated to write the songs for the album 'Split'. While both were very happy with the songs on the album (one of the songs being the hit 'Hypocrite'), they were not happy with the album after it's release. Why?

Answer: The album was ignored in the UK, and did not sell as many copies as 'Spooky'.

According to Miki Berenyi, the album was 'dismissed incredibly glibly'. The songs on the album were very personal. The song 'When I Die' was written by Anderson about her father's death, and the band felt that such emotional songs should not be taken so lightly.
6. Following the unfortunate failure of their second full album, Lush decided to try and make their music more accessible. Included on the album were the songs '500 (Shake, Baby, Shake)', and 'Ladykiller'. What was the song '500 (Shake, Baby, Shake)' actually about?

Answer: A Fiat car

Anderson, who had previously been described as 'brooding and progressive', exploded the myth about each band member's writing style. With lyrics like 'so alluring, they call you 'little mouse' by name in Rome and Turin', this album had much less aggressive lyrics that the previous release 'Split'.
7. Also included on Lush's album 'Lovelife' was 'Ciao!', which tells of a messy break-up between two people, and a bitter interchange between the two after they have parted. Who sang with Miki Berenyi on the vocals for this song?

Answer: Jarvis Cocker, of Pulp

After the release of this album, the band went on a long tour of America, with fellow bands Gin Blossoms and Goo Goo Dolls. Chris Acland, however, was soon ordered to go back to his home in the Lake District to recover from exhaustion, and Emma Anderson became disillusioned with the music industry, threatening to leave Lush.
8. While the future of Lush was put in doubt due to Anderson's negative feelings towards the industry, the news that would finally break the band up came through. Chris Acland had sadly died. But how?

Answer: Hanged himself

Berenyi claims that this is where the band decided to part. 'For me' said Berenyi 'that was the end. There was no way I could have gone on with Lush without him'.
9. Lush introduced themselves with a mini-album, which was the first time we heard from Berenyi, Anderson, Acland, and Rippon. What was the name of the mini-album, which was released in 1989?

Answer: scar

'Scar' included the songs 'Etheriel' and 'Thoughtforms'. Shortly after 'Scar' was released, Rippon quit the band, and was replaced with Steve King, who featured on all of the later albums.
10. And so that was the end of Lush. In 2001, Lush released a 'best of' album, which was dedicated to the memory of Chris Acland. What was the name of this album?

Answer: Ciao!

This song included tracks from all of the albums, including 'Nothing Natural', from 'Spooky', 'Ladykiller' and 'Ciao!', from 'Lovelife', and 'Hypocrite', from 'Split'. Lush did, however, have three lesser known albums, called 'Gala', 'Topolino', and 'Cookie', which are no longer available. This quiz, like the album, is dedicated to the memory of Chris Acland.
