Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Tragic sinister serenade Twisted melody shatters reality Dying hopes for a better day Fragile dreams that break away" Opening up is Arch Enemy. By the lyrics above, can you identify the song?

Answer: Silent Wars

"Silent Wars" is on the album "Anthems Of Rebellion" and was released in 2003. Upon listening to Arch Enemy from 2001 and on, you might not hear anything out of the ordinary. Upon further inspection, you will find that they have a female vocalist. Angela Gossow is her name and she can growl better than most men in that genre.
2. "We all go down for a piece of the moment Watch another burn to the death to the core And the roadshow thrills pack the freaks and the phonies" White Zombie joins the party with what song that has these lyrics?

Answer: Electric Head Pt. 1 (The Agony)

"Electric Head Pt. 1" is the lead track off of White Zombies' 1995 release entitled "Astro-Creep: 2000 - Songs of Love, Destruction and Other Synthetic Delusions of the Electric Head". Yes, that is a lot to say. Just call it "Astro Creep 2000" for short.

The line "Perhaps you'd better start from the beginning" found at the start of "Electric Head Pt. 1" is a quote from the movie "The Curse of Frankenstein".
3. "I can't control my shakes, how the Hell did I get here? Something about this, so very wrong I have to laugh out loud, I wish I didn't like this Is it a dream or a memory?" Slipknot makes an appearance with these lyrics. What song is this?

Answer: Wait And Bleed

"Wait And Bleed" can be found on Slipknot's self-titled debut album. Slipknot immediately found mainstream recognition with this song as it was nominated for a Grammy. VH1 included the song on its "40 Greatest Metal Songs" list. Pretty good for a newcomer to be thrown in with the heavies that soon.
4. "Taking no chances, you come with me I'll split you to the bone, help set you free" Diamond Head wrote this song, but another band made it famous. What song is this?

Answer: Am I Evil?

"Am I Evil?" was originally released in 1980 by the aforementioned Diamond Head. But, the most famous version was by metal giants Metallica.
5. "Life keeps slipping away Fighting in a war with damnation Poised, keep cutting away I'm looking in through to salvation" Ministry comes at us with what song that contains these lyrics?

Answer: Just One Fix

"Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs" is the wonderfully original title of the album "Just One Fix" is found on and the album was released in 1992. The song in question is undoubtedly one of the loudest songs ever recorded. Oh, and it has a sample of Frank Sinatra in it.
6. "Bang your head against the stage Like you never did before Make it ring make it bleed Make it really sore" This classic by Metallica goes all the way back to 1983. What is the title?

Answer: Whiplash

"Whiplash" can be found on Metallica's debut release "Kill Em All". It is four minutes of pure unadulterated frenzy. No rest for the wicked on this one. You're sure to go home with a sore neck.
7. "What do you mean, "I couldn't be the president of the United States of America"? Tell me something, it's still "We the people", right?" Megadeth isn't the only one with a question or two to ask. I also have one. What song contains these lyrics?

Answer: Peace Sells

This classic tune is a personal favorite of mine. Not just because of it being a killer song, but because of the lyrical meaning behind it. What this song does is take many of the stereotypes of heavy metal fans and flushes them down the toilet. Stereotypes such as we are lazy, no good, and a drain on society.
8. "Chaos A.D. Disorder unleashed Starting to burn Starting to lynch" Simple yet powerful lyrics from Brazil's own Sepultura. Which song has these lines?

Answer: Refuse/Resist

Sepultura were no strangers to taking on the brutalities of the world through music. "Refuse/Resist" is one of those songs. In its simplest meaning, the song is a protest tune against totalitarian governments and militia induced fear.

"Silence means death
Stand on your feet
Inner fear
Your worst enemy"
9. "Bold and disastrous My ears can't hear what you say to me" Pantera sang these words. But, what song is it?

Answer: Mouth For War

"Mouth For War" was a milestone song for Pantera. It was their first song to ever hit the charts anywhere. It went all the way to #24 in the states. Not bad for a time when many people claimed heavy metal was dying.
10. "Angels fighting aimlessly Still dying by the sword" In what Slayer song can these words be found?

Answer: Hell Awaits

"Hell Awaits" is the title track off of Slayer's 1985 album. It is one of the most brutal songs around. With demonic sounding guitar work and backward vocals, it is easy to see why Slayer was under fire from conservatives everywhere during their early days.

Speaking of controversy, Slayer thrived under it. With little to no radio play, even in the heyday of 1980's heavy metal, Slayer would possibly never have eventually claimed their throne as the kings of thrash metal without the Tipper Gores of the world trying like mad to fight the music.

On a personal note, Slayer holds a special place in my heart. I will never forget that fateful night when I saw them live for the first time. The date was October 26, 1996. It was cold. It was windy. There was a full moon. Slayer took the stage, grabbed me by the throat, and hasn't let me go yet. I've seen many bands, but none of them have ever matched the power of Slayer.

However, in 2013, everything changed. Guitarist and founding member Jeff Hanneman died. Slayer's future might be uncertain at this point, but their legacy is set in stone.
